Teen arrested for shooting girlfriend in north Fayette

By: John Munford

A teenager was arrested Friday afternoon after he shot his girlfriend during an argument at a north Fayette residence, police said.

When investigating the case, sheriff’s detectives found several other weapons including an assault rifle at the home at 280 Fairfield Circle, said Lt. Col. Bruce Jordan of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

Raheem Malik Grant, 17, was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a person under 18.

Witnesses said Grant was arguing with the victim when he shot her around 11:30 a.m., Jordan said. The victim was struck in the chest but expected to survive the injury, Jordan said.

When interviewing Grant at the hospital, Jordan said “he seemed to be high on something." Detectives took a sample of his blood to determine if he was intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Detectives found about 10 bullet holes in the wall of the residence, which was a small building behind a regular size home, Jordan explained. The building was not hooked up to a septic tank though it had a bathroom, and deputies found raw sewage on the ground, Jordan said.

You sound so proud when stating drugs and guns have always been here. Perhaps you are a reason for the proliferation of drugs today. I am not naive enough to believe that they haven't been here. I raised children in this county and was kept in the loop. (Somewhat) My daughter once told me that she could get all the drugs she wanted. Luckily she did't want them. Someday you will have to grow up and face the reality of what the drugs are doing to this area today. The issue is the growing problem with the use and sale of drugs happening now.

Sure there were guns. How many times did you hear of Fayette residents using a gun to settle an argument with their spouse. Very infrequently. Hunting rifles and hand guns are two different categories don't you think.

So yeehaw to you too. Be proud of your past or present as it may be. I hope you are an example for the community not a drugged up weapon waving idiot who settles arguments with a bullet. How proud his parents must be.

why would i be proud of something like that. that is what is wrong with these post it sites..you don't really get the way people are coming across. i was just reading and surprised at all the people that move here thinking that we are immune to this problem. That is all. Didn't not mean to freak you out, by no means. And that is awesome that your daughter has never decided to pick up any of those things but the truth is ..here in this beautiful town..there is a drug and alcohol problem and it has been here for a long time..that is all i am saying. back when i was coming up here in ptc. there were drugs and lots and lots of alcohol but the drugs that are available to kids today are much worse, ( i know that sounds crazy because no drug is good) but for example, ice and meth..have you seen what they really do to a person? have you watched someone killing themself with that?? I have. could not help in anyway. So, heck naw..i ain't proud, i am sad. but i am not living in a fog either.

Perhaps you had better read more carefully before shouting your opinion. No one ever mentioned substandard housing except the newpaper article. I would certainly call a residence without plumbing, in this day and age, substandard housing. Just because we use septic systems does not mean raw sewage is on the ground. Don't you call that substandard? A health hazard for sure.

I did cite low end housing. I call any house that can be erected, with a roof, in less than 5 days low end. Check out the large subdivision on New Hope Road near the Adventist church. Substandard? I don't think so but, low end----yes.

As a southerner with a family history that goes back to the Americam Revolution, I take affront to your insinuation that Fayette County was better before I came here. Who do you think you are? Being seventh generation anything does not make you a better person than a comparative newcomer. Since you don't know me and I don't know you it really is a moot point don't you think? You can only assume to know anything about me. Remember what "they" say about the word assume.

Fayette County became a better place because of the families that moved here in the last 20 and 30 years. Not worse. What is worse is the element moving in and around Fayette County in the past few years. I am not speaking of the good law abiding families that have been happy to call Fayette County home but,the people bringing crime and violence to a very peaceful, pleasant way of life. If you feel there is something wrong with wanting a little piece of paradise to call home than I feel sorry for you. Perhaps you have been hanging on to an ideal too long. Unfortunately (or fortunately), we do not live in Pleasantville and change is bound to come. Not all change has bad.

I agree with your comments about high priced homes being built and closing out the young families. That is a sad commentary on our life and times. Not just in Fayette but everywhere. There are plenty of small subdivisions in the county with moderate priced homes still available for the young families. Do they want them? Not usually. They want big and new. Keeping up with the Jones from the first.

I for one am quite happy in Fayette. Just not as peaceful as I used to be. It is harder and harder to feel safe here. What a shame.

Before you have a stroke an leave Fayette County for us interlopers to enjoy, I suggest you read these comments as another form of information about your fellow citizens and find the good not just the bad. Your opinion is just as important as mine. I chose not to duel with you over it. What a dull workd we would live in if we all agreed. Don't you think?

Have a great holiday and enjoy another day in Fayette.

Can somebody explain to me how a domestic incident involving a teen-age boy shooting his girlfriend at a private residence in North Fayette is a reflection on my community and a sign of its decline? SERIOUSLY! What does that have to do with me, you or the price of tea in China? Why should I be concerned? Because the suspect may be BLACK?

It is so sad to see the way of life change in Fayette County. As new residents have moved in I have noted the changes. Insidious changes that are not beneficial to our community as a whole. Changes that cause fear and talk of defense of our homes and property. No longer do I feel safe to run to the store after 10 pm. I wait until the next day. I have lived here for over 30 years and until the past few years this has been a wonderful place to live. I have gone to Commission meeting to protest against yet another subdivision and watch in horror as yet more low end housing has been allowed to be built. More houses, more taxes for our county. It doesn't matter who fills the houses and what type of lifestyle changes we are inviting to happen. Along with the more houses it is now apparent that we also need more law enforcement to go with the new residents.
I read the Vent in the AJC where Fayette is being referred to as Riverdale South. I guess I have lived in peace and comfort and I am horrified with the increase in crime and now find it difficult to feel safe in my own home.

Rather than spending so much time censuring Tyrone Teen, what can we do to change the feelings that were so boldly stated? Is this how our children are responding to the changes?

I lived through this same thing in Clayton County in the early and mid 80's.Apartments and rental housing went up everywhere and so did the crime. Looks like I'll be moving again soon, but this time far enough away to escape...like maybe Montana.

I've lived in Tyrone all my life. Everything was really good until all the {{{{{{{{{{EDITED and WARNED}}}}}}}}} moved here and John Weiland started building a bunch houses for them. All Im saying is that if they hadn't moved here and everything hadn't grown up so much around here that everything would be fine. Before all this happened our schools were good, there weren't half as many fights. There weren't any shootings. There weren't any robberies. The crime was kept to a minimum. Im not gonna sit here and say it isn't true. There were always a few good black people, that know how to act. They've lived here for forever. It just really disapoints me that they came here and ruined our town name and reputation.

thanks,
Erin.

FIRST OF ALL THE DEFINITION OF THE N----- IS AN IGNORANT PERSON. PEOPLE WHO DONT KNOW HOW TO SPELL ARE USUALLY CONSIDERED IGNORANT(IE: DISAPPOINTS IS SPELLED WITH TWO P'S NOT ONE.) OH YEAH BY THE WAY YOU WERE JUST CORRECTED BY A BLACK PERSON, IGNORANT. AND IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY MOST CRIME COMMITED IN FAYETTE COUNTY ARE COMMITTED BY WHITE PEOPLE SO DONT GET IT TWISTED. THE LAST INCIDENT I CAN REMEMBER WAS A WHITE BOY BRINGING GUNS TO SCHOOL. FOR EXAMPLE COLUMBINE...WHITE KIDS!!! DON'T THINK THE BLACK PEOPLE MAKE IT BAD STEP BACK AND LOOK AT WHAT THE WHITE PEOPLE ARE DOING. AND JUST SO YOU DONT THINK IM BEING RACIST, MY MOTHER IS WHITE!

I'm just kidding! I don't get ticked off anymore ..... life is tooo short to get upset about things you have no control over or shouldn't have control over (like other people and their opinions).

I also don't care about what the politics or reigious views of others are since it's THEIR choice. And my views are ever changing and sometimes hypocritical so I keep them to myself .... or try to!

Know what I have learned? When you discuss politics and religion both people try to get the other person to agree with them - know what that's called? An argument - or - an excercise in futility! Eye-wink

That really doesn't leave much to get mad about on blogs. I just try to stir up a little thought from time to time.

Know what else I learned? We all want the same thing - we just don't always agree on how to get/have it.

I leave the heavy thinking to the smart people - like you!

Oh, back to the wall. Walls are REALLY hard and weigh a lot!

Don't do it man. We need clear thinking guys who vote for the good guys and who's urine we can borrow for drug tests.

Was that gross? I mean, like I wouldn't watch you 'do it' or anything and it would be sealed and all....

I am just getting this post worked out too - it's a little wierd. I am used to blogging on other sites that are a little better laid out (just my opinion).

They do have a 'more' link on the bottom of the 'recent comments' and 'recent blogs' that expands them out. That might help you.

I am actually a hardware guy - thus the 'MainFrame' reference as some Army dude took exception too (I think the Air Force must be smarter) No offense ArmyMajorDude!

You seem like a really smart guy but I notice you are attracted to the political blogs. Ouch. I hope it's just a hobby and you like to argue!

Say, did you say you had FOOD in your fridge?

I just like to just make sure that people are actually thinking critically and not just spouting a mantra - but I really try to stay away from political and religeous discourse, err, I mean discussion.

So this food, is it, like, pizza and stuff? Anything chocolate?

Anyway, I appreciate the kind words but I seriously think people need more freedom and fewer 'rules'. I also think we should be more thankful that we are alive and stop worring about little things - like everything.

Every person is unique, and I cannot get past how many people want - even demand that others fit in to a 'catagory' so they can analyze them or think they have them all 'summed' up.

Humans seem to have the need to organize, package, and fence everything (in the image of the 'creator' - ouch - religious reference?) but they don't know when to stop.

People are special - all people - we need to be able to laugh at ourselves and laugh at others while we all stumble through this thing called life!

Wow - my brain hurts. I think I'll go to the fridge. Did you say you had cheetos?

The last 3 major crimes were commited by black people(not that it matters crime is wrong no matter what).

We had the armed robber...who hit at least 3 buisnesses, before being executed(rightly so) by cobb county SWAT team.

The last 2 drug busts were black drug dealers, unless the tv stations were using old stories.

The armed robbery by teens at the mobile home park...I can't rememmber if they were white or black.

It is only going to get worse. Tyrone has already oked another Wieland subdivsion. You have the Mayor of Tyrone, Janet Smola, who is on the schoolbord's husband, Mike Smola, and one other town counsil man to thank for that. It was almost a brawl when they voted in the last one.
Things are done in that area with little, or no regard for the people and their children already there.
The Tyrone teen may have put it badly, but there is plenty of anger in that area over the way things have been handled. So sad.

Submitted by wocdam on Sun, 10/22/2006 - 4:57pm.

With a name like "Tyrone", what do you expect?

Submitted by Honestly on Sat, 09/02/2006 - 10:13am.

Before we shoo off the tyrone teen for being politically incorrect we might educate him about the improper way he published his thoughts. Had he said what he means in a more proper form he may have began a much needed disscussion.

I think their may be more than a few here who are thinking some of the same thoughts as the teen. We would not have put it so crudely and we shouldn't because it only stirs anger from the other side which never leads to intelligent discussion.

When I was a teenager I was moved from a mostly white school to a mostly black school in an urban area. I remember how shocked I was at the violence and fights. Just as tyrone teen says about his friends, the blacks I'd known before were'nt that way. They had grown up outside the city. Those who grew up in urban areas were the more violent.

After I got to know some of them, when you talk to them one on one and their wall comes down, you learn that they have come to believe being violent is their only protection from being attacked by others. They come to believe they will be devoured if they appear weak. If every else was 'carrying' they thought they should to.

I will tell you tyrone teen that confronting them with racial slurs and anger will do nothing but make things worse. The ones among them who don't want to be the tough guy (or hasn't shot anybody yet) are the only ones who can be saved. Also the ones who have family members strong enough to step in and set them straight or move them out the atmosphere that is making them who they think they should be.

Ask any member of any street gang why he joined that gang and he'll say 'for protection.'

Some smarter than me should study the situation, interview people like tyrone teen and me who grew up in the middle of it, and find the solution. When Bill Clinton moved into Harlem, that would have been the perfect project for him.

Anti gun bias creeps into Mr. Munford's incomplete story. He does not describe the weapon used in the crime (which is the story), but seeks to characterize the rifle found at the scene as an "assault rifle."

Any item used as a weapon could be considered as an "assault knife," "assault club," or even "assault fists." We look to you for who, what, when, where, why and how. As demonstrated on these pages most of us can form our own opinions.

I also decry the proliferation of illegal weapons in the hands of teenagers and what is happening in our county. However incomplete reporting and anti-gun bias only play into the hands of those who would seek to disarm the legal owners of firearms.
