Honoring your ancestors has nothing to do with hate. Having some knowledge of this organization I want to thank them for all they do to keep up the confederate cemeteries in this area. Without them they would probably be in ruins.

So, are there similar groups for, say, the Spanish-American War?

In this particular case, all I can say is that I am glad to be a part of the "Union" and so am happy about the results of the war.

Keeping alive the memory of one's great-great grandfather who happened to fight for the south is honorable. Keeping the Civil War alive (after nearly 150 yrs)is juvenile.

Just tell me that the "Sons" are not up to the latter.

I'm not too sure about the Spanish American War, but going a little further back to honor our Revolutionary War ancestors there is the DAR and Sons of American Revolution. But then I trace my ancestors to the 1500s and this is a hobby for me so I'm aware of these groups. Believe it or not it is a heritage thing for me, like I said, not hate.

A true southern lady does everything gracefully. I'm always perplexed that 'northerners' think all things 'southern' are lame...there must be some reason ya'll came down. It's late...I'll think about that tomorrow, after all...tomorrow is another day.

Sometimes I feel like Scarlett, but we really must tread lightly when speaking on the issue of the Confederate army. Though it is History and Heritage, it's a really touchy subject for many. There are many people who get upset about this group meeting, and do consider it racist. The Black Panthers are a part of history too, but I wouldn't want them meeting in my church.

Ensure Domestic Tranquility

Why is it that anything to do with southern heritage or the civil war in general is viewed in a negative light? I don't know anyone that believes we'd be better off if the south had won. But why is it wrong to have a fondness and interest in the past. Most would agree that ancient Egypt's enslavement of Hebrew slaves was wrong, does that mean we should bulldoze the pyramids? History is full of bad decisions but also redemption. Do you really think the guys in the Sons of the Confederate Veterans group are closet KKKers? Gimme a break.

and even though it maybe unpopular to some, it is your right to be able to honor your heritage. I never ask or wonder whether someone I meet for the first time is from the North or South. I don't care!!
I honor all my ancestors by not forgetting them, whether they were soldiers in a war or not.
