Work begins on repaving Parkway sectionsThu, 08/24/2006 - 3:16pm

But intersection fix near McIntosh will take 2-3 years Fayette County paving crews are beginning to work on repaving two large sections of Peachtree Parkway, though wet weather this week has hindered them somewhat, officials said. The areas being repaved are from Ga. Highway 54 to Battery Way and from Crosstown Road to Robinson Road on the south end of the city. The city is responsible for traffic control, cleanup and striping of the road, officials said. The project is being paid for with funds from the Local Assistance Roads Program administered by the Georgia Department of Transportation, said city spokesperson Betsy Tyler. Meanwhile, the City Council was informed that additional turn lanes and other improvements further up the parkway, at the intersection with Walt Banks Road, won’t likely happen for the next two and a half to three years. The project is depending largely on federal funds, which come with a variety of strings attached including the use of environmental studies before construction can begin, officials indicated. Council voted earlier this year to have turn lanes added to the north, south and west bound lanes of Peachtree Parkway at Walt Banks Road with extra traffic predicted due to the Target and other new stores in the Kedron Village shopping center. The improvements will not include a traffic light at the intersection, and council likewise threw out a recommendation to reconfigure the four-way stop into a roundabout, largely to protect the safety of a nearby golf cart crossing. login to post comments |
