Students will have until Aug. 13 next year to enjoy their summer vacation.

The Fayette County Board of Education voted Monday night to start school a week later than this year. The proposal received the most votes of four options in an online survey and represents the latest date for the opening day of school in several years.

Even though the school year will start later, students will still get out May 23, which is the Friday before Memorial Day. However, students will only get three days for a Thanksgiving break and the Christmas break runs from Dec. 20 through Jan. 3.

Other highlights of next year’s calendar include:

• Early release days on Oct. 18 and Feb. 15.

• Winter break running from Feb. 18-22.

• Spring break lasting from April 7-11.

The second most popular calendar option also started school Aug. 13, but provide a week-long Thanksgiving break.

However, the last day of school for that proposal was May 30.

Thank you for giving the community a chance to vote on a school calendar. It continues to prove that you can't please everyone. Do what is right for kids and blow off the negative comments.

Is those 2 days at Thanksgiving will be wasted, education-wise. The kids will be too hyped up to learn anything, and the teachers will most likely plan movie days. Well, for those kids who actually show up, that is. Because my guess is that many parents will realize that it is a waste of time to send the kids to school those 2 days, and go on with their Thanksgiving travel plans on those days.

So now if we want to visit family at Thanksgiving, we'll have to go back to missing school or missing family. That's just lovely. I suppose we could try flying the day before Thanksgiving, a bit expensive though. Too long of a drive to not leave before that. Could have gone for a shorter Winter Break instead. No major "family time" holidays then.

Mom to 3, plus a few strays
