125 illegal students booted

The Fayette County School System’s deadline for students to file an affidavit expired Friday and 140 students were “probably” withdrawn from attending schools.

That’s the word from school spokesperson Melinda Berry-Dreisbach, who emphasized that these are students who were required to renew their residency affidavits from last year, but did not meet the deadline.

“We’re doing a systemwide check of all students and that will be completed Aug. 31,” she said.

Earlier this summer, school officials created a tough policy on dealing with students who actually live in other counties but illegally attend Fayette County schools. The policy includes system-wide residency checks, prosecution of parents swearing false affidavits and centralized registration.

Last year, the system conducted 427 residency checks resulting in 127 students being withdrawn because they were unable to prove residency.

The school system is a better pace now that some number of illegal students have been expelled. I have tried for 2 years to get this done - even using the extreme tactic of following students and their parents. I think if more of this did that we could send a message and keep down the scofflaws. Let's do it.

Have you ever stopped and thought about what you are saying? Maybe some kids go to the school because they know colleges wil pay more attention to their admission letters. Why can't we all just get along.

I'm not sure you're for real because I can't believe anyone would drag out that "Why can't we all just get along?" garbage to excuse parents who send their kids to Fayette County schools illegally. Why don't you stop and think about what YOU'RE saying? What in the world does "getting along" have to do with it? Parents who send their kids to Fayette schools are BREAKING THE LAW, and they're teaching their kids to lie and break the law, too. Let them move to Fayette County so their kids can attend school legally. Then again, I'm not sure I want those kids here anyway, since they're being taught how to cheat the system. Just get them out of our schools and quit spending my tax dollars on their education.

kids get their parents to buy a home and Fayette County, be a citizen and pay the taxes that would give them the right to attend our schools. This has nothing to do with getting along. This whole issue revolves around people stealing government services that they are not legally entitled to.

I am totally confused by the numbers. The headline on the Daily News in "300 out-of -county no shows" The story there is that 300 students enrolled last year didn't show up this year and 140 did not file a new affidavit to remain in the school system. How many out of county students were (are) there? Does anyone really know?

There are numerous out of county students legally enrolled in all of our schools. These are the children of teachers and administrators, who live outside of Fayette County, yet must be considered as "out of county."

Here is another: WHY were these out-of-county students here in the first place? Apparently there were 300 that they were expecting back this year to give another chance. Anybody know the answer on this, or is this a lot of posturing to settle down all the "gripers" who have made an issue of this?

I'm having a hard time with the way this article is written Johnny. What is "probably withdrawn"? In the world of factual journalism, are they... or are they not withdrawn? That was the policy of FCBOE correct?

Aside from that, I consider this a good first hunt. If I'm reading this correctly they identified nearly as many (2 less) within the first 2 weeks of school than nearly all of last year. I'm guessing if they stay on top of their game throughout the school year, they could easly see 300 illegals by the years end. Good return on investment.

Stay on 'em citizens of FC .... Don't let the school board take it's eye off of this. Don't be lulled into a false sense of complacency after the first hunt. The hunt has just begun ...

So, is it 125 like it says in headline or 140 or 127 in the story?

No matter - even using the lowest number we saved a million dollars. Way to go Arlene - well maybe not. Way to go Sam!

After reading the article I’m wondering if John meant to say 125 were “booted” and another 140 “will”, not were, “probably” withdraw.

The last sentence, "Last year, the system conducted 427 residency checks resulting in 127 students being withdrawn because they were unable to prove residency.” sounds correct.

Just guessing.
