In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful: Thousands of Muslims nationwide join MAS freedom on Aug. 12 demonstration. MAS Freedom preparing Muslim community, interfaith leaders and civil rights activists for march on DHS. As communities worldwide on Aug. 12 protested the death and destruction in Lebanon and Palestine, tens of thousands in the U.S. joined MAS Freedom Foundation (MAS Freedom) for major demonstrations throughout the nation. Muslims turned out in record numbers for the historical emergency March on Washington with thousands also rallying and marching in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Denver. The demonstrations were sponsored by MAS Freedom Foundation, the A.N.S.W.E.R. coalition and the National Council of Arab Americans (NCA). MAS Freedom Foundation Executive Director Mahdi Bray stated, “I felt that our MAS chapters did a wonderful job in mobilizing the Muslim community, especially since we only had three weeks to prepare.” Additionally, the response by imams, mosques and local Muslim community leaders was phenomenal. Bray noted, “It is crucial that we maintain this intensity and return to our communities fully committed to the pursuit of justice for Muslims and all people, at home and abroad. As I’ve so often said, when the rally ends, that’s when the real work begins.” MAS Freedom is currently planning, with the interfaith community, civil liberties groups and traditional civil rights organizations like the NAACP, a major rally and march on the Department of Homeland Security. The march will focus on the violation of the civil rights and civil liberties of the American Muslim community. The actual date and time of the march and rally are expected to be announced later this week. This direct action campaign is being planned in response to the outrage the American Muslim community has expressed towards their treatment as law-abiding citizens by DHS, and the failure of the Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Division of DHS to protect American Muslims’ constitutional rights. If you would like to volunteer or assist in the mobilization effort for this important event, please call MAS Freedom at 202-496-1288. MAS Freedom wishes to thank the thousands of Muslims across the country that responded to and supported the Aug. 12 action. We look forward to your continued support as we mobilize to deliver to DHS a strong and unequivocal message: that for the American Muslim, second-class citizenship is not an option. The Freedom Foundation is the public affairs arm of the Muslim American Society (MAS), a national grassroots religious, social, and educational organization. MAS is America’s largest grassroots Muslim organization with over 50 chapters nationwide. Learn more at www.masnet.org.
