A Serious Proposal - Tourism in Fayette County

OK, let me ask for some serious responses to an issue that has had some of us around the water cooler on edge for some time.

Since there is a "tourism association" in Peachtree City, what could Peachtree City and Fayette County do to increase, improve or enhance opportunities for conventions, tournaments or other tourism-related activities to come to town?

As it stands now, we have many facilities that could handle athletic tournaments (think like a Georgia Games). Although traffic is mildly frustrating, we have an infrastructure to get people around. We have three fairly good concert/theatre venues (Fred, Villages, Sams). There are a ton of restaurants, shopping options and hotels in the County. Fayette County has been a focal point for the past two Tour de Georgia events. What about a more community-wide (in scope) arts and music festival?

I believe we could put on an athletic Georgia Games like event that would be quite good. Have it during the summer with lots of different sports (swimming, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, hockey, lacrosse, etc.) and combine in concerts, entertainment, etc.

How could the Wyndham and the Aberdeen Woods Conference Center attract conventions with more substance?

Do you believe that bringing in more tourism-related traffic would be a good thing for PTC or a bad thing?

What are we lacking? What could we have that would bring folks in?

Other ideas? This has been on my mind for a while and I'm wondering what the great masses have to say on the topic.

It’s strange reading idontknow saying about former mayor Brown, “Boy, what a voice we ended up getting.” I contend that idontknow is worse than Brown ever was in our wildest dreams. Idontknow is the bona fide continuation of the infernal, internal battling in Peachtree City. Idontknow went out of his way to compare the former mayor to mass murders, war criminals, Communist dictators and people who assault law enforcement officers. How is the voice of idontknow any better for our community?

The shrewd little dodging device that idontknow keeps using are phrases like: “The man, for his "good things", hurt a lot of folks you'll never get to talk to, as they have either sworn off helping out in local government or have just flat moved away because of this man.” Or “…assuming his opinion was the only opinion and damning all others to the bowels of developers, old guard and other magic conspiracy theories.” Idontknow can do a verbal slam dance on a person for sure, but he has a difficult time providing the facts. Are the “folks” the development authority people and their illegal loan issues? (The same loans we are now going to have to pay).

Now remember what indontknow said about Brown in the previous paragraph and consider his blog entitled “People are dumb.” Here indontknow says, “So I'm reading through some of the, uh, passionate postings by some of those who feel that their opinion matters in the Whitewater High School student issue.” He later writes, “Sorry to be babbling here, but I am quite confused by those who decide to attack another's opinion, informed or not, with such vigor for an issue that seems rather clear cut.” It certainly sounds like only indontknow’s opinion is the only one that counts, funny, that’s what he said about Brown.

Oh no, idontknow, you’re right, you’re not “slandering” anyone. Instead, you’re dragging the level of public discourse down to the altitude of the Jerry Springer Show. You vandalize our community with hate-filled, over-generalized statements.

I couldn’t help but utter an “OH MY GOD” when you wrote, “I'd like to remind you that the people that I referenced [in comparison to Brown] (Hitler, Mussolini, Castro, McKinney and Stalin) all helped others.” This has to be the most flimsy attempt at defending disrespectful and offensive remarks about an honest, law abiding person that I have ever seen.

Nice try with the blog on tourism in an attempt to improve your bully image. Not one slam without facts in the whole piece. Too bad you can’t keep your stuff on that side of the line.

I felt like comparing you to Osama Bin Laden in this blog, but you’re not like him at all, so I won’t do it. Doing so would be extraordinarily rude to you, and it would reduce the hideous nature of Bin Laden.

Surprisingly, I didn’t even vote for Brown in the runoff, although I now admit, I made a mistake after watching Mayor Logsdon’s performance. And yes, idontknow, Mayor Logsdon did lie about tax pledges he made to many of us in person. However, my blog has nothing to do with Mayor Logsdon.

Idontknow, I merely read your revoltingly over the top comparison and put my name in place of Brown’s name, and thought about what my family’s reaction would be, what the other kids at school would say to my kids, and think what a severe castigation for four years of hard work and very little pay.

Vote Republican

I do not comment much, but love to read. Been here a long time, check it out. I have to say this though. If you are upset with something someone has said, go after them. IN THAT THREAD. My gosh, this exact same stuff (not the word I wanted but do not wish to be spanked) is on at least three differant threads and two of your own blogs. You created a blog just to repeat yourself. OK, I get it, you are not happy with what idontknow/nosejose said.

So, where do you stand on tourism.

I would like to point out that we have many parts of the Georgia Games in town when it is in the Metro Atlanta area. I know for a fact that we host the BMX and Volksmarch segments, and I believe we have even hosted swimming. Saying that, I think we need to put more emphasis on our local sports organizations that already exist bringing in large scale events rather than creating new ones.

As for the rest of tourism, lets be honest. We are not really a destination location. While the Fred has made (IMHO unfortunately) a deal with ticketmaster, that does not create tourism to the extent of needing an authority or a welcome center or the like. Whooo Hooo, I can get Big Bad Voodoo Daddy tickets on-line for a whole lot more than the face value.

Oh well, my two cents.

Poodles

Edit, Just read idontknow/nosejose post under this and saw that it has already been commented on that this has been posted in multiple places. Sorry, didn't mean to repeat anything. So, about tourism.

Note: The blogger known as idontknow has officially gone into hiding in the hill country of Kedron Village in order to regroup from the vicious, incisive, intelligent attack of other bloggers on this site. His Mexican assistant, No Se Jose, will relay messages from idontknow during his exile.

From the desk of idontknow:
I'm a horrible person. Spear Road Guy says so, so it must be true.

Spear Road Guy cares a lot, so much so he copies and pastes the same thing in three places to make sure you'll read it. I guess his castigations should lead me to run away in fear and shame.

Oh well - let's give him what he wants. I have a life, so I'll go back to it. You kids enjoy your little patch of self importance.

Oh, but before I go - did anybody else feel as offended as Spear Road Guy regarding my comments? PTC Guy, I saw your post against it, so you don't have to chime in again.

I'll assume the reticence I will see equates to "I don't really care", kinda like I think most people will. But I guess I'm not entitled to my opinion; I'm a bully, ya know.

As of 6am Monday morning, more people want the "free cheese" than think this blog matters in public opinion. Spear Road Guy, go away. You can continue the lovefest for the former mayor until you're blue in the face, but more than two thirds of the people who came out to vote in the last election wanted the former mayor to return to his quiet life and let somebody else take a shot. How about we let these new guys take a shot at running things for a term. If you think you can do better, run for office yourself.

The commend was "Steve Brown is a passionate person." I, very easily, gave you the names of other passionate people who are no longer in power. You take my words and do what you will with them, as you are entitled to your opinion. If you wanted to call me Osama bin Laden, or Satan himself, fire away.

Someone takes themselves far too seriously.

Vote Republican on that, wouldya?

BTW, what issues am I dodging that require facts, anyway?

idon'tknow/nosejose....I never read spear guy's epistles. He should send those in as a "letter to the editor." He, and a few other bloggers, I find rather boring. I skim their efforts, at best. I want news, witty comments, and SUCCINCT opinions. Not epistles.

They have to get talent on the board other than the what they have now.

Get some people with some business sense who are more in line with common folk and know how to appeal to other human nature. Not this high brow garbage we see them pushing.

I do mean this on the portion that would be doing the daily work to attract what was need. Not at levels where it is not needed.

You think stuff like this is working?

Give me a break.

I would never design a web site like this for such a purpose. It is as exciting as a telephone book. And it lacks some very inportant features.

I did a basic Internet test. PTC bombed in results.

I am not sure, and am willing to be corrected, but I don't think they staff anyone who just keeps the site up to date and INTERESTING while researching ways to attract more of everything to PTC.

Same would go for a Fayette County wide body.

That is my 2 cents without a paycheck attached.

Being a meeting/event planner for several years now, I've had the opportunity to look at several other tourism as well as CVB websites (both here in Georgia as well as other states) and I don't think it is as bad as you make it out. In deed, there are a lot worse out there. (Look at the Milledgeville CVB website if you want to see a really bad one.)

It appears the PCTA website is geared toward meeting planners and the information on here answers most questions a planner might have when considering hosting a meeting in PTC.

Some questions I have about your post....

What exactly do you mean by "I do mean this on the portion that would be doing the daily work to attract what was need"?

Where is the "high brow garbage" you reference on the website?

You say the website "lacks some very inportant (sic) features". What are they?

Also, what basic Internet test are you referring to?

Not trying to be argumentative, just curious.

No problem on no argument.

It is indeed planned exclusively toward meetings. Which is the mistake.

That is such a minute portion of what is out there.

Large groups, and such, are going to be drawn more to Stone Mountain and a couple of other such area facilities than here, for meetings.

The Tennis Center and Brown are absolutely 'yawn' issues as main attractions. One has to plan around the Brown's schedule. Tennis can be played on about any facilities property.

High Brow means it is geared to special classes and not the masses. And that is way too limited.

As for what lacks, if they don't have someone there who sees it then there is no use saying it.

Not being a jerk about it. But it is simply true that the tone and vision of a site is set by the one designing and admining it.
