3 arrested for cart path mugging

Three teenagers have been arrested for the attack and attempted robbery of a 14-year-old boy on the golf cart path behind Harmony Village and Balmoral Village apartments just over a week ago.

One of the suspects lives at Harmony Village, police said: William Jamrius Joyner, 17. The other two live in Sharpsburg: Cortez Coleman of Emory Philips Road and a 16-year-old juvenile, police said.

All three were charged with criminal attempt to commit armed robbery and battery.

Police said the three suspects stopped the victim, who was visiting from out of state, and attacked him on the cart path behind Harmony Village around 5:25 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2. After first asking for a ride to the nearby Publix shopping center, the three suspects attacked the juvenile and demanded money from him, police said.

Not only did they not get any money, but the youth was able to defend himself to the point where the suspects ran away into the apartment complex, police said.

Police Chief James Murray chalked the arrests up to diligent police work. Part of the reason it took so long is because the victim has returned home to his out-of-state residence, Murray said.

Thank you skyspy, I couldn't have said it beter myself. Yes Secret Squirrel, this information is correct. Please attend a city council meeting and see for yourself. Cost of their benefits is going up, while their pay is essentially going down, because their meager pay raises won't keep up with their insurance premiums increase. Man, Delta pilots strike if they are going to loose their HUGE incomes, while our police officers make lower pay that surrounding agencies in the metro-atlanta area. I thought our city was one of the wealthiest around? Boy, sure hope they don't decide to strike. Give the boys in blue your support.

They will be tried and punished. They will be found not guilty, guilty, or guilty of a lessor charge. These may be kids, but the punishment needs to fit the crime. If they go easy on the little guys, they might think that it's okay to do something like that again. I hope that they are learning their lesson.

Yes, these children will be punished- and they deserve to be punished. I don't know if you have ever been to a preliminary hearing in fayett county or not- buit basically, it is up to the distict attorney to decide your guilt or innocence. They do not have fair trials. Especially if you cannot afford an attorney. All the lawyers, judges, police officer, and the district attorney are friends. If you ever have the chance, go and sit in on a preliminary hearing- you would agree.

Within minutes of this incident being reported, the PTC police were in the area looking for the suspects. Not just one, but all that were available. They did a great job, and as a PTC resident I feel safer knowing how on top of things they are. But they didn't do it alone. As much as folks rag on the residents of Harmony Village, it was some of those residents who helped the police get these guys. They didn't have to do that, but I want to say THANK YOU to them for being willing to get involved, for coming forward, for not pretending to have not seen anything. With more help like that, the police will be able to continue to do their job, and make all of us safer.

Where are the mug shots of these 3 fine upstanding young men? Robin got his picture posted so where are the cart path bandits pictures?

They publish Cynthia nearly every day (her picture) but these guys avoid cameras like the plague. Can you imagine Cal running over there and asking for a picture like he must have of the "Columbine WHS" guy? Maybe the school will give him one?

Could someone please tell me how this was an Armed robbery? That is a pretty big offense to charge someone if they did not rob by force. Peachtree City police need to stop making up extra charges and adding them on. These boys should have been charged with robbery and battery.

Submitted by skyspy on Thu, 08/10/2006 - 8:23pm.

You can't threaten someone with a weapon even if you don't have one on you. In other words you can't say "I'll shoot you if you don't give me all of your money" Whether you have a gun or other weapon on you; you just threatened that persons life. ( and especially in Fayettenam you won't get away with doing that). Now in Fulton Crime County, you can do that all day long. ( are you thugs paying attention)?

Did the article say that these are ‘ALL’ the facts? No, it did not.

If you’re so concerned about the charges, why don’t you go to the police station, leave your beer in the car, and ask for a copy of the police report?

These three should be made an example of what will happen to the stupid “I wana be a gangbanger when I grow up” low life, pond sucking scum they are.

Submitted by MOMMY on Thu, 08/10/2006 - 12:48pm.

Well Bad_PTC, I did not say that these were all the facts. I like how you always have something negative to say about my comments. Back in the 70's, when people got in fights, where they considered gang bangers? NO. I am glad these boys got arrested because they did something wrong. I am sure if they used a weapon, it would have been all over the news. These are just kids, they have a lot to learn. You have only one sided opinions because nothing like this has every happen to someone close to you

17 is NOT a kid. Apparently the military thinks he's old enough and mature enough to fight for his country - and NOT on golf cart paths.

And this situation doesn't have anything in common with your friends predicament.

At least you are consistent with your ridiculous opinions.

So now ”I am sure if they used a weapon, it would have been all over the news.”

You were SURE that the 14 year old did something to deserve it in the first place. Your record of being SURE about anything is questionable.

The initial news report had breathless commentary from Police Chief Murray, detailing the "choke holds" and punches used by the 3 goons. It also said that the golf cart teen was able to fight all three of his assailants off with his bare hands.

Either there were no weapons or we have some of the wimpiest "gangbangers" ever around!!

Maybe the Chief was patrolling the paths now and saw the choke holds?

When the realization set in that even though there were three of them, this one guy is about to kick all three of the a$$’s, the “Wes wansta bes a gangbanger whens I grows ups” decided that it was going to look bad so they ran away.

Just because you have a weapon, doesn’t mean you know how to use it.

These three were probably not the sharpest tools in the shed. I doubt they were on any list for academic achievement either.

The article does not specify if they were armed or not. The PTC Police are not in the habit of "making up extra charges." And, Mommy, you don't necessarily know the entire story, because all the details have not been printed in the Citizen. And no, they shouldn't have been charged with robbery, either, because it was ATTEMPTED, so the charge should be ATTEMPTED robbery/armed robbery.

Submitted by MOMMY on Thu, 08/10/2006 - 2:06pm.

Yes, They should have been charged with attempted robbery. You are right- but not armed robbery. There were no weapons involved. Actually, if you must know, a good friend of mine works for the Peachtree City Police Department. He is were I get all of my information.

"Peachtree City police need to stop making up extra charges and adding them on." That's what "Mommy" just posted. Are you one of the arrested kids' Mommy? I'm just wondering, because I can't imagine why else you would be so quick to trash your local police department when you don't have all the facts. The rest of us have come to grips with the fact that a newspaper article is not a complete police report - and as such we cannot expect it to convey every aspect of a crime. Maybe you should look things up before you speak - Georgia law 16-8-41 clearly states:
“A person commits the offense of armed robbery when,
with intent to commit theft, he or she takes property of
another from the person or the immediate presence of
another by use, or threatened use, of an offensive weapon,
or any replica, article, or device having the appearance of
such weapon.”
Sounds to me like it fits. Even if they did not use a weapon, the "Robbery" code section says the same exact same thing (sans use of a weapon) and is also a felony. Even still, I'm not sure why you would say that's pretty severe if they "didn't rob by force". The article says, "Police said the three suspects stopped the victim, who was visiting from out of state, and ATTACKED HIM on the cart path". Sounds like force to me.
I guess Mommy, or one of her little angels, got caught doing something wrong - and now wants to smart off about the cops. Oh well... I say good job to PCPD.

Submitted by MOMMY on Thu, 08/10/2006 - 12:44pm.

Well Mr. police officer,
First of all, I am not trashing my local police department. I think they did a great job on catching these criminals (you must be the lead investigator). However, the people involved in this crime were just immature children. As you know, they are all around the age of 17. People make mistakes when they are younger. To charge someone with attempted armed robbery, when no weapons were in use, is a little severe. I understand that the newspaper is not a complete police report but if there were weapons used- THEN TRUST ME- PTC WOULD HAVE LET EVERYONE KNOW. I am only sticking up for these boys because I know someone in the same situation. He was charged with armed robbery. The only reason he got charged with armed robbery is because the person who pressed charges against him said he had a gun. After a few weeks went by, the police department did some investigation to find there was no gun. The "victim" was no longer a victim anymore. The victim was charged with 2 felony counts of lying in a criminal investigation. Why don't you go and look this this case up MR. PTC 80? Peachtree City police have a tendency to take a victims side of the story (even if there are no witness) and use it to prosecute. All peachtree city police officers are not this way- but most are. And, no I am not there mother, my child isn't even old enough to know what fighting is.

PTC80's picture

You think I'm a police officer because I can google "Armed Robbery, Georgia Law" and copy/paste it to an article? I hope the police department's standards require more knowledge of the law than that. I don't know exactly what the facts of the case were (weapons used or what), I'm just saying that you shouldn't make statements such as your's without knowing all the facts.

MOMMY = BLALOCKLAURA? That's some impressive reasoning. I thought the PTC was short for the city I lived in, and the 80 is the year I was born in. Thanks for correcting me. You might want to correct IMNSHO too, it would be hard for me to drive the magical PTC80 car that doesn't exist.

Submitted by MOMMY on Thu, 08/10/2006 - 2:04pm.

mommy=blalock laura? What are you talking about? Anyway, I was just assuming that you were a police officer because of your definition of an armed robbery. But I guess it is not hard to copy and paste. I thought that we were going to leave this subject alone because no one knows the whole story?

Basmati's picture

So "Mommy" says the perpetrators should be charged with robbery instead of armed robbery because there was no weapon involved.

And you, PTC80, respond with a textbook definition of "Armed Robbery" which specifically states that there HAS to be the use (or threatened use) of a weapon and then you state that this statute "fits", except for the part about the weapon and stuff.

Were you homeschooled, PTC80?

(BTW, for extra credit you may want to research the difference between "slander" and "libel")

PTC80's picture
Submitted by PTC80 on Thu, 08/10/2006 - 1:43pm.

As I said, the article says "attacked on the cart path". I don't know if that means a weapon was used or not. That's why I included the Robbery part, because that seems to fit if there was not. It would seem logical to think there was a weapon when they state that the charge was "Armed" Robbery, but let's just leave it at that since none of us know for sure. I did not say it fits in this case, except for the weapon. I mean that it fits if there was a weapon (see above reference to logical extrapolation). And yes, that was my bad on the libel vs. slander remark. I'm aware of the difference, excuse the misstaement. No need to be a smartass.

Dear Citizens

All these comments are very positive and helpful in the paper, however be sure you also support them at city council meetings and tell all your law-enforcement friendly neighbors and friends to do the same. Our police officers are under threat of serious pay and benefit cuts. Lets show them how much we appreciate them and be sure EVERYONE knows it! Hey city council of Peachtree City, our public safety individuals need pay raises, not pay cuts!

Please provide evidence of this. When has anyone proposed cutting PTC's police pay or benefits?

Submitted by skyspy on Thu, 08/10/2006 - 7:37am.

The city council at their last budget meeting came up with a stupid plan to save money.
This plan if I remember correctly involved all employees. Their faulty and foolish plan is to cut all cost of living raises, and make the employee pay for more of the health care insurance. If you do not get cost of living raises you are losing money. That's why they call it a cost of living raise to keep up with inflation.
First of all they should have cut our city managers wage and the small wage we pay our part-time mayor. That should have been the first cuts. We are giving them big job titles, that should be more than enough.
The problem is other cities are paying firefighters and police officers more to begin with, so now it will be very hard for us to hang on to our best employees. Frankly after the summer we have had with crime, we need the brightest and the best here, we can't afford to lose them.

Thank you, PTC police. I am convinced that 99% of police departments would have said, "no harm, no foul" and dropped the case immediately. But not you guys. You said, "Hey, there's a thug in our neighborhood, and that bastards going down!"

Book 'em, Danno!

YES!

It's too bad I can't prove who keyed the heck out of my car the day after I told some teenagers to stay out of my yard.

Thank goodness school is back in session.

The burning question on everyones mind: What are our police officers going to do, now that the teachers have taken over the job as teen babysitter??? I bet it is lonely at the police station. No idiot parents screaming about how it couldn't have possibly been their "little angel wangel" Yeah I bet they miss hearing that one. Don't worry they will be out of school in no time, and then the police will have to take over again.(because you know the "parents" ? won't.!
