PTC extends supervision of police by Mayor Logsdon

Peachtree City Mayor Harold Logsdon will continue to oversee the police department through Oct. 1, the City Council unanimously decided Thursday night after a closed-door meeting.

Logsdon has been serving in that role, both unofficially at first and later officially, since the June 3 DUI arrest of City Manager Bernie McMullen, who was arrested in the parking lot of the city’s amphitheater while driving his golf cart and holding a glass of wine.

Several weeks later, council voted to have Logsdon assume supervision of the police department, with McMullen resuming police supervision once the city’s annual budget was approved by council.

The reason for the extension granted Thursday night is so McMullen won’t be writing the annual personnel evaluation for Police Chief James Murray. Instead, Logsdon said he would handle that paperwork.

That vote was made after council discussed the matter in executive session, Logsdon said.

Logsdon is also hopeful that McMullen’s case will be disposed of before the Oct. 1 deadline for the city manager to resume administrative oversight of the department.

McMullen is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 22 in an attempt to keep his driver’s license. Georgia law requires the possible suspension of the driver’s license of any person who refuses to submit to a blood alcohol sampling, as McMullen declined to do when he was arrested.

Persons who refuse the BAC test are not eligible to receive a “work permit” to drive while their DUI case is pending, according to Georgia law.

Without his driver’s license, Bernie would no longer “be able to work for the city,” Logsdon said.

“I’m not going to hire him a chauffeur,” Logsdon said.

McMullen’s case has been bound over to Fayette County State Court, meaning it will not be heard in Peachtree City Municipal Court like other typical DUI cases. Fayette County Solicitor Jamie Inagawa said he will be handling the case himself, treating McMullen just as he would any other citizen charged with the same offense.

The Mayor should not be doing this job.

Think, folks, he is on the board that evaluates the evaluations, makes critical decisions and so on.

One on that board should not be the one presenting oversight views to the board.

An absurd conflict of interest.

Someone else should have been appointed.

My good citizens:

If you have not read the arrest report, please do so prior to bashing our fine police department. The city manager was treated like any other citizen. Would you not want him treated as the citizen he is? Do you feel he is above the law? Thankfully, he was stopped by our officers and he did not have an accident, or worse, while driving home or wherever he was going. If he would have wrecked and killed someone, I'm sure everyones opinion would be different. I know your thought already... He didn't wreck. It is the job of our officers to PREVENT wrecks and crime, not to only respond after the fact. I BELIEVE A LIFE (maybe more) WAS SAVED!

I think he was actually given better treatment then you or I would have received. He was given 2 chances to pour out his drink. Most of us lowly taxpayers would have only been give one chance at the gate leaving.

I hope they throw the book at him. The quicker we are rid of this belligerent idiot the better our city will be.

Let me be clear. I did not say he had a lifestyle illness. You accused him of being a drunk. HE is not a drunk. You have no proof of that. No one does. You keep on making accusations and slandering him and offering no proof. When was he given two chances to pour out the wine. NEVER! Were you there? You didn't respond to that. Are you just hearing things around and making conclusions off things that are clearly not fact. And now you call him a belligerent idiot. Once again why? What has he done? You lowly taxpayer... Should I feel sorry for you now? If you think you are so capable, than why don't you apply for the job and let us see what you are capable of.

The word is that Logsdon wants him out. If the city manager is convicted and loses his driver's license, that could be all the excuse the mayor needs.

How do you know? I am so amazed that so many rumors are put on here. Do you work for the City? Did you go to the last City Council meeting? Are you somehow privy to information that none of the rest of us are?

Concernedreader is getting a little warm. Here's the way it's done. Some people don't associate with people they don't like. However, there are a select few that hang around, smile and listen regardless.

The mayor would be amazed at number of people who think he's an idiot but still hang around him.

Let's see who'll be right. If he loses his drivers license, the word is that he's toast.

Don't worry, he won't lose it. A fine (covered by the next raise) and probation is all. Refusal to take test won't even be charged! Know why? Officers have ignored such stuff for 20 years at certain places, but the boss teed off the department!

Apparently it would be expected that the PTC Town Manager would write a poor revue for the police chief since the town manager apparently was set up by the police department. Also, the city judge won't hear the DUI case, it has been moved to county court. The refusal to take a blood test by the manager was stupid, but he knew he was set up! We seem to have the same kind of power struggle within the PTC police department and the town as is going on between the county and the sheriff's office. We shouldn't put up with this crap. I hope when this is over that it will be cleared up as to whom the police chief reports and the sheriff. Get the darn alcohol out of the amphitheater!

I don't think so. They gave him a chance to pour out his glass of wine and go on.
I hope they would give all of us that chance too.
Then big shot started running his mouth instead of doing what he was told.
If my taxes are paying your salary you had better be squeaky clean. My money should not be wasted on a sorry arrogant drunk.

I am curious how do you know everything that you claimed in your post. Were you there? When did they give him a chance to pour out his wine? When exactly did he start throwing his weight around? I read the police report. After they said that they were going to arrest him, he asked if they knew who he was. He was not trying to intimidate him. He had said that they should call Chief Murray. They said Chief Murray would not want to be bothered. CLEARLY the Chief of Police would want to know that the City Manager was being arrested not to prevent but because it is a big deal. Now, onto the slander that you feel so free to throw around. Sorry arrogant drunk. Why? Being an alcoholic is a disease that is a lifestyle. Do you have those details of his life in a way that the mayor and city council do not. Are you somehow aquainted with him that would give you the intimate details of his life that others do not. How dare you slander someone like that. That does not reflect poorly on Mr. McMullen who has handled this situation with dignity but poorly on you. I feel sorry for you because you are missing out on the opportunity to get to know an amazing man.

He absolutely was trying to intimidate them. He clearly thought that by telling them to call the police chief that Murray would get him off the hook.
I think he was given more of a chance to do the right thing then you or I would have been given.
Should we feel sorry for him because of his "lifstyle illness"??? You have to be kidding!

when offered the chance. I know I would had I been in that situation. I've been to a lot of shows at the Fred, never seen any trouble, and I've never seen the Police "looking" for trouble either.
