Possible attack at WWHS diverted

Student arrested with several weapons, 150+ rounds of ammo in car

A possible attack on Whitewater High School was foiled Monday morning when a student was arrested after several loaded weapons were found in his vehicle, deputies said.

Inside the car was a case with two rifles, a revolver, more than 150 rounds of ammunition and a black outfit that included military style pants and a hood, police said. Also found was a pair of binoculars, a large “ninja” style knife and a belt included two “speed loaders,” devices that are used to quickly reload a revolver with six shots, police said.

The student, Robin Kittrell, 17, of Carrollwood Drive will face numerous felony charges, said Lt. Col. Bruce Jordan of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. He was arrested at the school and taken to the Fayette County Jail.

“We don’t know if he had it in his gut to do it or not, but he definitely had it in his head,” Jordan said.

Kittrell told detectives why he brought the weapons to school, but Jordan declined to divulge that information other than to say Kittrell’s story was “ludicrous.”

Detectives searched Kittrell’s home Monday afternoon and found no written material indicating a plot against the school, but they also seized his computer and will check it for further evidence, Jordan said.

The investigation began when school principal Greg Stillions got information that Kittrell had brought a weapon on campus, Jordan said. Stillions then called Kittrell to his office and had the student searched, turning up a switchblade knife, Jordan said. Campus officials then searched Kittrell’s vehicle where the weapons cache was found, Jordan added.

It is not known if any other student was planning on participating in a possible attack on the school, Jordan said.

Students who hear about a possibly dangerous situation involving other students at school should alert a member of the school faculty immediately, Jordan said. If they learn about the matter at home, students should tell their parents and then call 911, he added.

“Students have just as much a responsibility to keep the school safe as the faculty does,” Jordan said.

Sheriff’s detective Tommy Pope recalled meeting Kittrell when he was a student at Whitewater Middle School. Kittrell would often come to the school office to complain that he was being picked on, Pope remembered.

If it hadn’t been for Stillions taking action to stop Kittrell, a horrible situation could have unfolded, Jordan said.

“Stillions is the only way we knew about it,” Jordan said.

“They were real lucky,” said Fayette County Sheriff Randall Johnson. “That could have been a disaster.”

Also found in Kittrell’s 1991 Volvo in the student parking lot was a suitcase containing several extra pair of underwear, police said.

Out of district students are a issue in Fayette county because of obvious resons not because they cause problems but because we are having to build new schools to house them with our tax dollars. I agree we are not beyond approach when it comes to this sort of things it can happen anywhere. I have a daughter that started WWHS yesterday in the 9th grade and I know this has and can happen anywhere. (Fayette County will not shield us from evil) I am glad this was handeld properly. Give credit where credit is due, Our local law enforcement and school officials and our children that listen to their parents or whom ever about reporting possible acts of violence, Great Job !! I am also thankful that all is well with the children at wwhs, and hope this child gets the help he needs.

More and more kids are learning in trailors now a days, and yes they can learn the same in a trailor as in a classroom....Not the point..The point is we spend 7500.00 Dollars a year for every student...Why then should we pay for some other child to be taught here...

I am happy our County is finaly cracking down on this problem. Are there many more problems in the world yea but this is a TAX problem in Fayette County..Maybe our taxes will not rise so much next year?

Submitted by zzsweet on Tue, 08/08/2006 - 10:06am.

Our WHS is already over crowded. This is unexceptable for a new school. I was informed that the teachers are already sharing classrooms this year. What, does that mean trailers next year???? I find this difficult to comprehend, did they not think about this when building the school. What is so difficult about keeping out of county students out of our schools??? Yes some have the exception to the rule, (of course, there always is) but please, with all the new neighborhoods being built, of course our schools are crowded. I sure hope my up and coming 9th grader will not have to be taught in a shoe box trailer.

Submitted by zzsweet on Tue, 08/08/2006 - 7:40am.

Why is everyone shocked by this? Because we think it will not happen in our school????? Please, wake up to reality. I hope that Rob will get the help needed. Remember, this was his choice. Only he made this choice, regardless of how he was teased etc... he made a choice and now is paying for it. On another note, I agree with whomever wrote about Stillions and officers getting their glory for the day. How can you praise someone for responding so quickly, WHEN THAT'S THEIR JOB!!!!! Our school has become all about MONEY & SPORTS, what ever happen to education? Such a shame............................................

I agree with you to the Fuliest. The reason that everybody is so shoked about this is because we live in FAYETTE COUNTY NOTHING IS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN IN A WHITE RICH COUNTY but, guess what it did. Fayette county has nothing better to do but praise someone for responding so quickly. If you get pulled over for running a traffic light the ENTIRE POLICE DEPARTMENT HAS TO COME AND BE NOISY, so lets be for real.

Submitted by Take back Fayette on Tue, 08/08/2006 - 2:29pm.

would you rather have them responding to murder calls all over the county like Fulton and Clayton? Be glad theres really not enough crime to keep them that occupied.

I'm a mother and wife of an FAYETTE COUNTY POLICEMAN ,there are alot of things that go on in this county that are just not reported than you think.

Submitted by funfer1 on Tue, 08/08/2006 - 1:54am.

I am completely astounded at how some of you are responding to this siutation...it is so typical of "Fayette County" socialites to immediately start pointing the fingers. It's the parent, it's the bullying students, etc., etc. How about this for a change, get a clue. These students (obviously) have access to anything they want. Whether its drugs, alcohol, guns, sex...anything. People say it starts with in the home. Maybe, to a degree, but I don't think it was his parents that put the guns in his car. When Fayette County finally starts to put their money where their mouth is we might actually see a metal detector in a school or security on the grounds. Until then, stop judging each other and making a fool out of yourself and start making changes in these children's lives that are going to build the esteems and the personalities of the people who are going to be taking care of us one day. As cliche as it sounds, our children are our future, and the quicker we can make educated decisions that will better fulfill our children's emotional needs and not their financial desires, the safer we will all be.

to avoid them screwing up royally? Well, a very, very smart Senator once said that "it takes a village" to raise a child. Most misunderstood that. My parents, and school officials, and neighbors, all had the same frame of mind about raising children. All expected the same thing from children and the children knew it! Not now. If a teacher swats a kid on the face for pinching a girl. the parent either goes to the school and raises h..., or sues. A shame. But, it does allow the board of education to hire many dunderheads since they aren't expected to know when and how to discipline.

Submitted by pldoolittle on Tue, 08/08/2006 - 9:55am.

Doppler,

In your paradigm, I do agree that "it takes a village". But Hillary was misunderstood? I think not. Hillary makes very little effort to hide the fact that she has strong communistic/socialistic leanings.

As for the BoE hiring idiots, that's not the problem. The problem is that they (and every other public office) are not hiring people with guts. Since 911/Columbine everyone is petrified to make a decision that may later be questioned. So they operate in CYA mode 24/7. If there is even a remote possibility that their actions may have repercussions, they err the extremes of caution. And it will perpetuate until the people of this country regain their intestinal fortitude and become leaders again. Sadly, I do not see that happening...

Where does one have the access to purchase all of these weapons? That's the important question. How does one have access to this?
Yes, when Fayette spent millions on this new school, they should have put metal detectors in, they have cameras. It's a real shame our society now a days even has to resort to putting in camera and metal detectors.

It is OK if you don't like guns. That is your right. The 2nd admendment gives me rights to keep a weapon. No one in their right mind wants "all" persons to have guns or available to "everyone". Your comments are just liberal talking points. No matter how you look at it, the 17 year old should not have had any of these, much less at school.

There are way too many comments like
"You don't know him and I do"
"He is such a nice guy"
"It is a cry for help"

Face it Fayette County, a thug (and yes I used that term on purpose) was removed from the streets and the school before a much more serious situation manifested. When Jordan said his excuses were ludicrous, you have to admit whatever they (the excuses) were had to be ludicrous. What reason does anyone have to bring that type equipment to school?

My opinion, get him out of the school system and into jail. Then find the offenders who allowed the weapons to fall into the possession of a minor.

What the kid did was not defensible. I hope and pray he can get help and get straightened out. I'm not ready to trash him but he has some junk to deal with now. Now he can't graduate with his class and his road is now a much more difficult one to travel on.

No one was hurt and again get him some help.

WakeUp is right.....find the rest of the enablers and let's hold them accountable.

They did nothing except pick him up, as usual. Wow, glad you are around, we don't need grand juries, charges, juries, or judges. If someone says it is bad, hang em! Saddam kinda worked that way, I think.

WakeUp's picture
Submitted by WakeUp on Tue, 08/08/2006 - 8:49am.

OK, they picked him up. Still, what he did was bad and he needs to be handled accordingly. I did not list all the steps to the end, and I agree there should be due process. But the end result is a thug brought guns to school grounds.

Maybe I should take the stand that he has "issues" to work through and the courts need to cut him some slack and "rehabilitate" him and then prosecute the ones around him who turned him into this thug. Then we should settle the lawsuit he will bring against the school for violating his civil rights and causing him embarassment to the tune of millions. After all he is only a victim.

Yeah right. He had guns. He broke the law. He created a dangerous situation. Hanging (your implied solution, not mine) may be too harsh, but prosecute and throw the book at him.

There is no logical explanation for justifying Robin’s actions today. However, there are many misconceptions about Robin’ personality and his daily life at school. Anyone that had a class with him would without a doubt say he never intentionally displayed hatred towards anyone for any reason. On the other hand, Robin was constantly ridiculed for his appearance by many students and was alienated by the “popular” kids in the student body. Very few can fathom the tribulations he faced each day walking the halls of WHS. I am not trying to justify the situation in any way because there are no excuses for taking the lives of innocent teens for ones selfish desire to become noticed in society. If the administration would have taken the time to sit down and just listen and try to understand his situation this may have never happened.
Face it, high school is made up of numerous social clicks that everyone wants to be apart of. The only way for that social click to become more popular is to exclude more people in harsher ways. Some times, putting others down for no reason gets taken too far and over time builds up. It is up to the faculty to be on top of issues like these, even thought the faculty had no idea what was planed for that afternoon, because it is their responsibility to insure safety for each and every student attending the school. It’s heartbreaking for something this detrimental to happen to such a pristine school in such a promising area “Cough, Cough”. School may never be the same again at WHS due to this incident. Hopefully this confrontation will inspire the administration to maybe take more time to sit down with troubled students and encourage them to seek help. Today, WHS was fortunate that everyone ended up safe and unharmed. Days like these will hopefully persuade us to not be so cruel to others, and over time prevent other incidents like these.

Submitted by somesomething on Mon, 08/07/2006 - 11:00pm.

this didnt post before so I'm trying again, excuse me if there's two:

First of all, what good does it do to print his street name? I suppose so that the students of Whitewater and other local schools can harass his parents, hmm? I'm sure they would with those sorts of comments "I dont know this family but it's real easy to say..."

Secondly, Robin wasn't going to shoot/kill/threaten/etc.etc. anyone. I'm not going to bother to defend his intentions because I'm sure my explanation is similar, if not the very same "ludicrous" explantion Robin gave to authorities. Does that mean that he shouldn't have been arrested? No. Robin's not above the law and despite his intentions, it was completly absurd for him to bring guns to school.

Yes, the comment on Pope's memory does over-sensationalize the situation. Robin was not exactly oblivious to the fact that people "made-fun" of him--which is a stretch, anyway,--but whatever joking people made with him for his sometimes awkward behavior was certainly taken light-heartedly.

But I will say that I am sick and tired of self-proclaimed godliness among the faculty, most particularly Stillions. We got a letter in the mail today, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if Stillions threw himself a party tomorrow to honor his "bravery." THAT had nothing to do with it. Do you know what would have happened to him if authorities knew that he had information about this situation and not reported it? Let's try fired! But no, Stillions and the rest of these police officers are now the men of the hour because of their fearless action!

Heroes are those teachers who make the effort to care about their student's on a personal level. I've been in school with this principal for three years. I am an active student with high grades and many
teachers know me, even a few I haven't had (for good reasons.) I have never been a diciplinary problem, and perhaps for this very reason among Stillions (who goes to my Church), Pope and Tutterow, and the other four assistant principals, only one knows my name. She has tought me for three years. I have five new teachers this year. It's the first day of school, and all of them know my name. What does that say? If any of these wonderfully, brave adults (stillions, tutterow, mickelboro) even gave a damn about their students, maybe they would take more concern in the students themselves sometime before they are arrested.

First of all, it is normal in the event of ALL arrests to print the street name of the residence of the individual... The student was not singled out in this course of action: they do it for everyone! Read the Police Blotter in the paper each week. I'm sure you'll see some of your buddies in there, and you might learn something! Secondly, how in the hell do you know he wouldn't have shot/killed/threatened/etc. anyone? You don't know WHAT he was thinking! Obviously he had something he was planning for, and you are arrogant to presume you know what that was (or WASN'T)going to do. And why do you knock Principal Stillions' and the Sheriff's Department's actions? They acted quickly and decisively to head-off a disaster, in which your spoiled little ass could have been hurt! The fact is, no one will ever know what could have happened had this student not been investigated. The principal and police did not take their course of action to pat themselves on the back-- they did it to protect YOU, the students. I graduated from McIntosh under Principal Stillions, and never knew him to be the self-promoter that you seem to suggest. Be thankful that he gives a damn about you all.. And, he was doing his job.

ExExPatriot's picture

... for two items with which I disagree:

First, no one, maybe not even Robin could say for certain why he brought those weapons, regardless of how plausible sounding the stated reason may be. Also no one could say what might have happened were they not found. How often has he brought that arsenal to school without getting caught? How many other students do you know of that would bring such an arsenal? Do you see this as normal behavior for someone who doesn't want to hurt anyone?

Second, you make very light of his being "made-fun" of, calling it light-hearted behavior.
You may have believed it to be light hearted and not serious, and even Robin may have put a very brave face on the outside but think about it; It sounds like he has been going through this all of his school life and no one would listen. You get good grades and have never been - or had - a discipline problem, how can you know what he went through, how he percieved this being "made-fun" of, and how he felt about his life? How can you be so certain that he was not at the breaking point -or close?
Lets put it like this: would you bet your life that he would not have injured anyone? ... uh again, since you already did at least once?

Never underestimate the consequences of long term chronic pain be it social, mental or physical.

Otherwise very good and telling post.

First off, when I first heard this I was thinking it was a joke because I was suppose to be a student at WHS but I chose to go to FCHS and now am a student at Gordon College. I went to WMS with Kittrell and I personally never got to know the kid.
Second, the correct abbreviation of Whitewater High School is WHS not WWHS, Whitewater is one word. Same thing with Whitewater Middle School is WMS.

Submitted by tabletpc2 on Tue, 08/08/2006 - 8:49am.

I will graduate from Gordon because there is a program offered by the Georgia Gov't that allows high school juniors and seniors to take high school classes at the college level and I started my junior year and Gordon as you should know is a two year school. I already have half my graduating hours and I have two more semesters putting me on time to graduate from Gordon in spring 2007 just a few weeks before I walk at FCHS.

This zzsweet person is trying to run the board policy now. Pretty bold for someone who has been around for about 7 hours.

This is a free board and they can post what they want within the guidelines of The Citizen. Back off.

I think it is telling how a student can attend both High School and college at the same time. If more students had this kind of drive and determination, then situations like at WHS would not occur. I think this kid made the decisions to advance his/herself. And I also would bet you the parents (I used plural on purpose) take an active role in their life.

I am very thankful for the quick response and actions of Mr Stillions and the FC Sheriff's department. My son is in Rob's grade and we've known him and his parents all his life. Even though I don't know what Rob's intentions were, I am grateful to have my son home safe and sound.

I feel the "memory" recalled by Sheriff Pope should not have been printed because it sensationalizes Rob's situation.
We (John Q Public) don't have all the facts and irresponsible statements just like that tend to get the general population stirred up.

What possessed him to bring these items to school, we may never know but I pray that Rob gets the help he needs. He is extremely intellegent, makes great grades and has a bright future ahead of him.

I don't know this family, but it's real easy to say his parents suck at life cause their son did something really stupid and disturbing. But teens are notorious for keeping things to themselves, even if they are close with their parents.

This kid obviously has problems, lets just be thankful that no innocent kids paid the price for his massive error in judgment. Now everyone go hug your teen and tell them you love and accept them no matter what. Good night.

Like a boy scout should be (though he isn't one), he is prepared for everything, though his paranoia and perfectionism seem to me to have driven him beyond what most would consider normal or sane. It's my belief that he had the weapons for the off chance that he may need to protect himself or others, similar to the underwear, so uncourtiously meantioned in the text, that he no doubt had, silly as it sounds, just in case.

Regardless of what anyone may think after having read the above artical, let me say that it utterly fails in representing Robin as the oddly noble person he is. He is no killer. I know this because I know him. All his friends would agree: he's a bit quirky and a lot off, but he is no killer.

It is a good thing that you are standing behind your friend, he will need you now more than ever. It sounds like he has need more friends like you. Remember for every Action there is a Reactions. He has made a bad choice and he will have to deal with the reactions to his decision. Remember anytime guns, drugs and cruelty in invoulved someone is probably going to get hurt. Please stay safe!! and Smart;)
