Voters apathetic; Dunn due thanks

To say I was disappointed in the outcome of [the July 18] primary county commission election is an understatement.

Where were the voters? Only around 11,000 people got out and voted, so that means in the commission election just over 5,000 in a county of over 100,000 people decided the direction it will take in the future.

That is not the reason I’m writing. We’re losing a great commissioner in Greg Dunn and I wanted to let him know he is appreciated. He’s worked very hard for us, mostly while taking lots of potshots and fire from the local newspapers and the sheriff.

Greg, I’m sorry that so many people out there who know the exceptional kind of man you are couldn’t take a few minutes from their busy schedule to vote. I must have talked to a dozen people who didn’t vote who wish they had. It’s a shame many of the people in this county will never know a fraction of the good things you did for them.

We all yell and scream that politicians are corrupt and can’t be trusted and are out for themselves. In Fayette County we had someone who was the opposite. I’ve known you for a long time and know you are honest, intelligent and a cut above the rest. I’ve never had any doubt that you cared a lot about the county.

You didn’t lose on Tuesday; the people in this county lost.

I wish Eric Maxwell the best and hope he’ll do at least half as good as Greg Dunn. I hope he won’t do the things he said he’d do when he ran. I don’t want four houses on an acre or sewer in the county and a bunch of signs everywhere like I saw during the election.

I like our quality of life and hope we won’t see what I’m expecting, which is developers lined up at the gates come 2007.

I want to remind everyone that there is a runoff election on Aug. 8. Don’t stay home this time; get out and vote. Even if you didn’t vote on the 18th you can vote on Aug. 8.

I’m going to vote for Linda Wells. We lost the best of the best on Tuesday; we can’t afford to lose Linda.

Yes Greg thank you so much for the outrage between you and Law enforcement, and trying to have your own agency with the Marshals.

OH thank you for the tax dollar waste over those law suits. PRESH!!

Brad is right on one thing, no doubt about it, voter apathy is huge. Anybody who says "the people have spoken" after an election are really talking about 15-20 percent of just the registered voters.

I think that the Wells vs. Smith race could be the closest county election ever. Peter Pfeifer's first race (for Harold Bost's unexpired term) was won, I think, by around 100 votes. The one on Aug. 8 could be much closer.

I just remembered, Mike Smola only won by 9 votes to a guy that was moving from Tryone. A lot of people now are wishing they voted the out-of-towner in office.

Vote Republican

I believe it was Harold Bosts first run for the commission that he won by about 42 votes (give or take) in the primary.

I agree it is terrible.

But for the rest, on Dunn and Wells, he could not be more wrong.
