Senoia City Councilman Perry Benson resigned Wednesday and the City Council is expected to decide Aug.7 whether to appoint an interim councilman or wait until the fall elections.

Benson sent a one-sentence resignation notice to City Hall Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday, Benson said he had to resign because he had recently sold his home and moved outside the city limits.

“This was a big decision for me and I really struggled with it,” he said.
Benson was elected last fall and was serving a one-year term.

“I would just like to than all the people who supported me and helped me get elected. I always intended to fulfill the term of my election, but my house sold quicker than I anticipated,” he added.

Benson’s house sold just two weeks after it was put on the market, so he had no choice but to resign his council position.

If he had stayed in town, Benson would have had to stage another run for office in the fall, since his term was filling the unexpired term of a former councilperson.

City Clerk Debby Hogan said the council will have the subject of Benson’s council seat on the Aug. 7 agenda.
