Fayette NAACP: Young black men at high risk

Tue, 07/25/2006 - 4:41pm
By: Letters to the ...

Recently we, the members of the Fayette County branch of the NAACP, were saddened again by the death of a young man killed in a shooting, resulting from another senseless crime and the inability of our young African-American men to handle disputes in a non-violent way.

Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon occurrence. The problem manifests itself not only in the hip-hop community but in the larger black community as well. Far too often senseless black-on-black violence causes the loss of our young black men whose futures are ended tragically and unnecessarily.

No good is served by keeping silent about this issue, by generalizing or by engaging in finger-pointing. What we need and must have are solutions. The thinking and behaviors that lead to these terrible events can be changed.

Therefore, the Fayette County Branch of the NAACP, in cooperation with the Fayette County Schools, will sponsor a “Men of Valor” Conference for men and boys to be held on Aug. 12, 2006, at Sandy Creek High School, 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The conference will provide information through interactive workshops to increase awareness of the true role of men in our society. We believe it will also educate all men and boys about issues of importance that can help to prevent the circumstances contributing to this crisis.

Join us in our efforts. We encourage every Fayette County adult man and boy 14-18 years old to participate in this urgent and pivotal experience.

Please do not sit idly and quietly while this devastation continues. The time and opportunity to take some positive action is now. Together we can work to make a real difference and begin to stop the tide of violence.

For further information about the conference, please contact the Reverend Melvin Ware at 770-719-9238 or the Reverend Edward Johnson at 770-856-3271.

In Christian solidarity,

Rev. Edward C. Johnson, President
Fayette County Branch NAACP
Fayetteville, Ga.

If all the NAACP presidents were like you, the organization would work. Unfortunately, the national group has become a splinter of the Democratic party.

Violence is a huge problem among American youth but don't you think that the NAACP should be reaching out to all young men (not just those who participate in black on black crimes). Truly, what happened to a village raising a child? You have an obligation to everyone not just one race! As a matter of fact, didn't the NAACP begin with both whites and blacks working together and isn't it true that right now the NAACP is trying to bring back that union?

rear children, not villages. Get off the liberal dream crap and face reality.

The first step is admitting there's a problem.

Bill Cosby is 100% correct.

That is the problem with the parents here. No matter how many times the police arrest their kids and bring them home, they refuse to believe that their thug worthless kid is guilty.
Even as I type this Dahmer jr.(neighborhood nickname for this kid) is out vandalizing property, while his mother is who knows where!? He is 15 I thought we had a curfew here?

Do you know how hard it is to discipline kids???
The government has made made it very difficult for parents to control
the kids, yet they make them responsible. You try to enforce rules, you get accused of abuse. Not that 60 ot 70 % are not neglectful but some(the other 40 - 30 percent) are just victims of the system.

all I can say is amen rmoc! amen. The government interferes with discipline and then when the child goes out and does something in the streets, the parent is held responsible. if i can discipline my child, as i was(and it did not kill me) then i wouldnt have to worry about statistics. I will continue to discipline, because I love my children and want the best for them, and allowing some outsider WHO IS NOT SUPPORTING THEM-run MY household is not an option.

The next time the police call to tell her that they have her son, she should tell them that they have the wrong number.

Let the jail house crowd have his a$$, literally, for a couple of days.

It’s not that the parents of these thugs don’t think their kid’s guilty. They just don’t care.

In some cases the kid was probably sent out by mom or dad or both with instructions to bring back beer, cigarettes and dope.

You might be right about the not caring part.
These particular idiot parents in my neighborhood honestly do not seem to care if their kid gets killed breaking and entering. You would think any smart parent would know how danegerous that kind of behaviour is. Eventually these kids will break in on the wrong person. I guess it would be one less burden for the parents. It makes you wonder why they had them. It is sad.

There was an incident in DC a number of years ago when "Da Mayor", Barry was at one of the hotels that the city uses for project housing and the woman there had 17, yes 17, children.

Even Barry questioned her about having so many children and her reply was something to the effect of, “that’s hows I gets my moneys. Yous gots to pays me for havin em”. “Yous gots to keeps payen for mys rents too”.

If we could only force these idiots into mandatory surgical sterilization before they get their first welfare check. Make it a condition of the welfare check. How different, and better this country would be!!

I’m all for helping someone that needs wants and appreciates help. That’s what real family friends and neighbors do for one another.

But when people start to make a living from it…NOPE.

I'm all for helping people who work hard to make an honest living. Not people looking for a free ride.
