Tyrone denies commercial zoning

Tyrone officials turned down a commercial rezoning request Thursday night for a 10-acre parcel off Ga. Highway 74 between Jenkins and Sandy Creek roads.

The parcel is part of an 88-acre tract that was recently rezoned for office use, but the developer wanted the commercial element to support the office buildings, explained representative Jerry Peterson.

The developer, Doug Walker, wanted a limited use commercial zoning. But several council members said they thought it would open the door for other office zoned property along Hwy. 74 to be rezoned commercial in the future.

The planning commission had recommended approval of the rezoning with several conditions, and Councilwoman Grace Caldwell made a motion to approve the rezoning. It died for lack of a second; Caldwell was the sole vote against the motion to deny the rezoning.

Councilman Paul Letourneau said a similar property further up Hwy. 74 was denied a commercial rezoning despite the fact that it too was zoned for office use.

I think that the office space would be a good idea, if they could keep it limited to a specific portion on 74, and not rezone everywhere. I am sure there is some way they can ensure that only one particular area is rezoned.
