4-laned Hwy. 54 into Coweta to open early

Motorists who travel the western leg of Ga. Highway 54 between Peachtree City and Coweta County may experience less traffic congestion Thursday morning.

That’s when the Georgia Department of Transportation will open up all lanes on both sides of the highway from the main intersection in Peachtree City all the way into Newnan on Ga. Highway 34.

Some lane closures will still be necessary to finish work on the project, but “every effort” will be made for crews to be “out of the way” during peak traffic times from 7-9 a.m. and from 4-6 p.m., said DOT district spokesperson Barry Hancock.

The lanes will be open during those time periods, but at other times lane closures will be in place at random locations to complete the project, Hancock said.

Two large jobs left on the checklist include the replacement of a large overhead sign mast on the Fayette section, which is the responsibility of the DOT, and installation of a cart path bridge overpass across the CSX railroad tracks, Hancock said. The latter is expected to require considerable lane closures at some point, but the bridge construction is the city’s responsibility.

The project was due to be complete by the end of the month, but the early opening of lanes during commuting times will doubtless be a sight for sore eyes for those driving between Fayette and Coweta counties. The road was due to open by the end of the month but work on the small details will continue into August, Hancock said.

going home. From Westpark area to areas in Coweta. Apparently it was open Wednesday PM.

I just took a ride myself, looks good, and will look better when more landscaping is installed.

We took a long drive throuh Centennial and that area.

It is no where close to built out or sold. Then add Seasons!?

If all that traffic has to come out and in that one way, who ever told that area just expanding 54 would take care of all the traffic issues was on drugs, lying or didn't have a clue.

Not trying to crank up the by-pass stuff again. But there is no sanity the to planning in that area so far.

You can already get through there easily with a pickup truck.

Just where and how, since CSX said no grade level crossing.

You got my attention. Fill me in, please.

You're saying that CSX has said they will not approve an "at grade" crossing? Seems crazy, as that would be fine in my opinion.

I grew up in Morrow, GA and we had plenty of crossings like this that worked, and still do work, fine.

My comment is strictly from a fellow I know that works for Weiland and says his crews use the road through there all the time.

Off hand, the new 4 lane is very much improved to Newnan.

The issue now is building bridges. And at several million per, that is not faring well.

Sure. 4 lanes to Newnan is majorly better. But with all the developing, on that stretch, that gains will be swallowed up far too soon.

I believe I know where they are talking about. But that is not a commuter 'path'. I doubt it is even public.
