Plenty going on at local race tracksFri, 07/14/2006 - 12:42pm

After last night’s racing action, there are three weeks of racing remaining in the 2006 Thursday Thunder series at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The weekly Legends racing series will take place at 6 p.m. every Thursday through Aug. 3. Fans can watch true short-track racing from the Thunder Ring, the quarter-mile track located along Atlanta Motor Speedway’s frontstretch. Tickets can be purchased the evening of the race at Gate 13, located on the front of the property running parallel to Hwys. 19 and 41. Tickets are just $5 for adults, $1 for children 6-11 and children 5 and under are free. For more information, visit www.atlantamotorspeedway.com, www.legendsofga.com or call 770-946-4211. Here is a brief look at the Thursday Thunder participants from the area: • Jonathan Chandler, 16, of Fayetteville races in the John Deere Outlaws division. With four wins in the 2006 season, Chandler raced to a third-place finish last Thursday. He is the current points leader of the John Deere Outlaws division. • Trey Maughan, a Fayetteville resident, is in second place in the Outlaws division. He trails Chandler by nine points. • Ed Clark, 51, of Peachtree City competes in the Tanger Outlet Center Masters and John Deere Roadsters divisions. President and general manager of Atlanta Motor Speedway, Clark finished ninth in the Tanger Outlet Center Masters division and earned a fourth-place finish in the John Deere Roadsters division last Thursday. Clark stands second in the John Deere Roadsters division by only seven points. • Matt Dooley, 10, of Brooks competes in the Atlanta Dental Team Bandits division. Dooley drove his No. 3 car to a 12th place finish last Thursday. • Steve Fessler of Tyrone races in the McDonough Hospitality and Tourism Chargers division and finished ninth in week six of Thursday Thunder racing. Fessler is currently fifth in the McDonough Hospitality and Tourism Chargers division point standings. • Billy Fulson of Brooks competes in the Back Yard Burgers Semi-Pro division. Fulson earned his second consecutive top-five finish last Thursday, wheeling his No. 18 car to fourth place. Fulson stands third in Back Yard Burgers Semi-Pro division points. • Tina Johnson of Senoia is 10th in the Semi-Pro division. There is also racing occurring in Senoia at Senoia Speedway. There will be racing tomorrow night in the Iceman, Sportsman, Street Stock, Lengends, Bandos and Pro Challenger divisions, and on July 30 there will be racing in the Sprints and the Georgia Asphalt Series, as well as a demolition derby. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. and racing begins at 6:45 p.m. Admission is $10 for general admission and $2 for children ages 10 and under. |
