Taget gets OK to expandWed, 07/05/2006 - 8:14am

A May request by Target to add more than 9,000 square feet on the front of its Fayette Pavilion store by extending the building 35 feet and decreasing the number of parking spaces was approved June 27 by Fayetteville Planning and Zoning Commission. The variance request and development plans were approved on a 3-1 vote. Target representatives complied with commissioner’s May 23 request to bring a letter from the Pavilion owner supporting the enlargement on the front of the store. Target was also asked to provide new project elevations. The building expansion would be used primarily for additional office space. “You’ve made the changes we asked you to make,” said Commissioner Bill Talley, commenting that extending the building into what is now the fire lane and parking spaces would likely only pose a problem during the Christmas shopping season. Currently totaling 116,000 square feet, Target wants to add another 9,230 square feet along the front of the building, expanding it approximately 25 feet into the parking lot. The extension into that area will involve reconfiguring the drive aisle and remove approximately 70 of the current 629 required parking spaces. Commission Chair Sarah Murphy voiced some concerns over parking while Commissioner Derryl Anderson said extending the building would cut down on vehicles cruising close to the store front. The lone dissenting vote on the expansion was Commissioner Allan Feldman. “Friedman’s (Jewelers) is buried now and they are going to be buried even deeper,” Feldman said, referring to the store immediately adjacent on the east side of Target. Friedman’s is dwarfed by Target and Home Depot, positioned between the two large retailers. login to post comments |
