Commission Debate on June 29th

Richard Hobbs's picture

I happened to attend the "debate/forum" hosted by the Kiwanis and I was sadly disappointed. With all of the vitriol that one reads in the newspaper you would think that some of the candidates would have taken their gloves off and let it all "hang out".

My take on the program and the candidates.

Too Short.... Way too little time to hear their opinions. Of course it lasted almost 90 mins. I enjoy it when we give the candidates a chance to speak to each other, directly, not via a newspaper's "letter to the editor".

The candidates. Two of them were way, way, way out of their league. One doesn't necessarily need to have a college degree to be a Commissioner, but you could tell which of the candidates were educated.

Mr. Mack was pleasant, but who knows why he is running. He wanted to know what Dunn was going to do about a red light at the hospital. When he was told this was the City of Fayetteville's jurisdiction, he just said okay. If this is the best the Democrats can do, well, it will be decades before they ever win an election. Which brings us to those Democrats that now are running as Republicans.

Sam Chapman. I have no idea where to begin. He rambled on and on and on and on. He never made one cognitive comment the entire evening. When it came time to ask a "debate" question to his opponent, he instead questioned Dunn. I thought Wells was his opponent. When he was asked a direct question, he just would ramble on with his prepared run on sentences about how he is a leader, that he is a banker, and that we need a horse park in the Kenwood area.
Yes he thinks we need to spend perhaps millions of dollars so that we can have a horse park in the north part of the county. One candidate told me that Sam loses more votes everytime he opens his mouth than any one he has ever seen. I suggest he should stop talking and keep putting another $75,000 into his campaign and post more of his cute smiling signs in the county right of ways.

Ms. Wells as usual was Ms. Wells. As she reiterated, she has been in the public eye for 14 years and if you don't like what she's done over those years, then don't vote for her. But that she believes her votes have always had the best interests of the County in mind. Slow controlled Growth following the land use plan, low taxes that are spent carefully and plans for our future predicated upon reliable data.

Jack Smith was articulate and seemed at ease with the forum. He pressed his CPA background and his individualism in being a commissioner.

Mr. Dunn similarly stated that he has been there for 8 years and his record is his record. He wants to finish the job, so he needs 4 more years. He believes that his 3 lawsuits filed in 8 years of office were justifiable and that he has never interferred with the Sheriff's law enforcement duties, only his accounting procedures.

Eric Maxwell reiterated that he would uphold the strict growth controls currently in place, but that he'd stop the excessive legal fees by being less confrontational. He believes mediations are a good resource in resolving conflicts if both parties are reasonable.

All in all, no candidate stood out as a dynamic personality over any other. Well, Mr. Chapman stood out, but not in a positive way. The audience was found giggling and fighting the laughter over and over again as he rambled through the discourse. I think Mr. Chapman should spend less money on campaign signs and more time on an education that might prepare him to govern. He may very well win this campaign by trying to associate himself with Harris Hollis, the Sheriff or by attacking Greg Dunn, who he is not his opponent, but that will be the electorate's own fault.

One question that was never asked....

Mr. Chapman. Have the shareholders of Talbot State Bank ever expressed a concern at the expensive ad campaigns recently enlisted by the bank that for all intents and purposes have been nothing more than a campaign expenditure for you? The bank is called Talbot State Bank, Not the Sam Chapman's Talbot State Bank. At the Fayette Amphitheater your face and name are shown at twice the size of the bank's name. This is also true of your other advertising.

If this were a Federal Campaign, then I suspect your Bank's expenditures on these "ads" would be closely monitored and challenged as possibly being improper. If this is the way you manage your bank's advertising dollars, i.e. as nothing but a promotion for your private interests, then why should we think you would govern Fayette County any differently?

If I owned shares in that bank, I'd be ticked. Then again if the only shareholder is your daddy, then I guess thats okay.

Anyway, this campaign is not about campaign yard signs its about substance. I hope that each voter actually investigates the "substance" of each candidate rather than the "image" that each want us to see.

Voting is a right but its one we should not take lightly. We have a duty to investigate, contemplate, and then educate ourselves who is best able to govern our County and not by how many yard signs are blocking our view as we look to enter a roadway.

I did not attend this one, but I did attend the Rotary forum and the candidates were the same there. No big surprises. Your report is good.

Chapman is certainly an immature dolt, but other than that, all the candidates are sincere and believe they can (or have) contributed to the county. Nevertheless, the decision is ours, the voters, in a couple weeks.

Smith and Maxwell are my choices. My reasoning is that it is indeed time for a change and these two are the best leaders for the county. It does not need to be more complicated than that. All you people who think that because Eric shook hands with a developer once or that Greg is boring or that Linda is a rubber stamp for Greg and Peter or whatever someone said or did once need to get over it.

Pick the best person based on he or she being the best person - OK? The rest will all work out fine.

Good Comments Robert W. And I also appreciated the history that you and PTCGuy gave on the early roads and highways. I believe that Fayette's first paved road was Ga. Highway 85 shortly after the Depression.

I like your comment above: "Pick the best person...The rest will all work out fine." I voted for Steve Brown, for example, two times. I thank he has a good heart. The first time he beat Bob Lenox. The second time he lost to Harold Logsdon. But in the end our community will be fine. Good post.

stradivargal,
At the risk of faulting your memory, Brown did not defeat Lennox in the election. Lennox was done in by term limits. Brown won in a run off with someone, whos name escapes me, with a whopping total of 30 some hundred votes. As for the good heart, I believe it was Brown that started the editorial and anonymous attacks on anyone who had anything to do with the city. I do however think the pre-Brown sewer deal "stunk".
Woof

I have been around Peachtree City a long time and I know many but not all of the players involved in this election. All of the democrats are foreign to me.

I don't know who Git Real is but I've read his blogs enough to respect his intelligence and knowledge of what's going on in Fayette County. I agree with most of what he says in this post except I would never encourage anyone to waste a precious vote. I will pick the lesser of the two evils in each case (Maxwell and Smith) and move on. I agree with some of what Mr. Hobbs has said (I've met Mr Chapman, enough said) but I don't know much about Richard Hobbs.

Mr. Hobbs my knowledge of you is extremely limited. Who are you and where did you come from? You post under your actual name so you're not seeking anonymity. I have only recently began to see and hear your name, maybe because I'm in Peachtree City and perhaps you're not. No disrespect to you Mr. Hobbs but I would want to know a little more about you before I take your advice on how I should vote.

I know that you are on the Board of Elections because I recall being uncomfortable at the amount of statistics you used from your position on that board to campaign for Emory Wilkerson. I've read that you are an attorney but I've noticed a lack of knowledge in some areas of the law. Again no disrespect intended perhaps those were not your areas of expertise.

I know you have apparently involved yourself heavily with the local Fayette County Republican party, which many of us long time Fayette Countians have steered clear of because of their propensity to stray from the mainstream. So, if it's not to much to ask, who are you? How long have you lived here? Why should we listen your advice to us on who we should and shouldn't vote for?

Thanks for the kind words. I am sure that many here might disagree with your complimentary remarks about the lion. I can only say this election proves out the need for an eight year term limits mechanism to kick in. And since the politicos don't have what it takes to do the right thing regarding limiting the amount of time they spend in office then we the people need to git with the program. As far as Donald Duck goes let me just say this: I stand by the premise that voting for the lesser of two evils is still voting for evil. Hence my quagmire. Please everyone....don't start trashing me saying I'm calling everyone evil. I'm speaking figuratively.....or am I?

I'm sorry that you do not know me, but for whatever its worth, my opinions are just that opinions. Everyone has them. I would never ask anyone to take a position based upon my opinion per se, however, I would ask you to find out for yourself if my opinions have merit, and if you find that they do, then my endorsement is of little if any consequence.
I'm curious as to the "legal" issues that you felt I was lacking in expertise. Since I am an evil trial lawyer, I am only an "expert" in but a few areas of the law. I would not advise anyone on divorces or patent law. I believe that I can be a jack of all trades and a master of none, so I've chosen to be a master of one. . . or two. I have a small law firm of two attorneys and six terrific support staff.

I am very active in the local grassroots party. I am just a worker bee though, because I have no ambition whatsoever for public office, unless a U.S. Senate seat might be given to my by Sonny. Even then, I'd probably run away for fear that I might be corrupted too easily.

I'm as right wing as I can possibly go, however, you may be very surprised at how libertarian I can be. I've lived in PTC for 11 years now and have a wonderful better half of a quarter century and 3 good for nothing children, 2 are in College and one at Booth.
My undergraduate is in Christian Theology, however, I am not by any means a bible thumper. In fact, the series of books called "Conversations with God" have given me more confort than the Bible in many years. (But that is another subject entirely.)

I'm blessed in so many ways.

I'm curious as to how you believe the Local Party has strayed from the mainstream. I believe most Americans and most Fayette Countians are conservative if given the choice, so I don't know what you mean by mainstream.

Oh, and I don't mind having my name given out with my opinions. I figure life's too short to worry too much about what other people think about me. So my political opinions might occaisionally polarize a few, but hey, thats life.

And finally, I do my very best at not judging people, but alas I fail quite often. The one exception is in politics. I believe that if you place yourself into the public spotlight, that you should be willing to be scrutinized very closely. This includes checking your voting records out as I did in the last special election, or in questioning the educational background and true work history of our current crop of commissioner wannabees. (The voting records which I did acquire in the last election were part of the public record. Any citizen can see these records. Not just members of the Board of Elections.)

Nothing else to report about this old shyster lawyer. I'm just a man of "constant sorrow". (one of my very favorite movies)

Thank you Mr. Hobbs for your biography. I apologize for my late response but the holiday weekend is keeping me busy. You are correct, all of our opinions are just opinions. I now have something to base your comments on.

As to the legal issues I questioned, I shouldn't have brought it up. If I were to debate that issue with you it would make it appear as if I had a concern in that matter and I don't. I was just commenting on something I noticed. I think you commented at the time that you were not sure of that area of the law.

I think the fact that you refer to the local Republican Party as the grassroots party pretty much speaks to my comments on the local Republican Party. We have been one of the premier Republican Counties around Atlanta for the last 20 years. If our local party is still referring to itself as grassroots, well enough said.

I'm sure you were speaking tongue in cheek when you referred to your children as good for nothing. We all hold our children in the highest regards no matter what difficulties they put us through and Lord knows all children will test us.

This is my last post under this name as I have infringed on someone else. Lifeinptc I will yield to your seniority but I wanted to respond to Mr. Hobbs under then name which I initially addressed him in.

Thanks Richard for your take. I was unable to attend but it sounds like the candidates pretty much confirmed the rantings that we enjoy bantering about here.

I think it's time for a change on the commission. Eight years is long enough. I don't trust Greg anymore and him being a lame duck candidate if elected for four more years might embolden him to further abuse his power in pursuit of further political aspirations. I still don't trust Eric. I've got a real problem with trial lawyers these days. Especially when they enter government. Soooo.... I stand by my support of Donald Duck in this race. I wish Greg would stop pulling up Donalds signs as his supporters put them out. Smiling

Linda has served her time and has performed well on the land use issue. Eight years is enough for her and I'll stop there as not to be accused of being ugly. Sam Chapman??? Do I need to say anything? Jack Smith from all indications appears to be a "safe" candidate. And I'm not real sure what that means. I am holding out on what I've been told about him trusting that he will be conservative and wise in his approach to governing. Accountants are usually pretty solid folk except for the Democrat types like Mr. Outlaw that likes to punish successful people through our current and punitive tax system

Sooooo....Unless there is some remarkable revelation about the candidates the lion will stick with his picks. It's Jack Smith and Donald Duck in 06.

Someone told me virtually the same Richard Hobbs has reported about the debate. Anyone who knows Sam understands that he is not ready for the commission seat, but he may well be someday. He is a kid, inmature and not up to date on the issues and interworkings of local government.

Now, if you think the race between Dunn and Maxwell is a tossup, I have to disagree. I know Maxwell personally and Dunn somewhat. I have had occasion to follow the commission since around 2000, and I don't like what I have seen from the three vote bloc of Dunn, Wells and Pfiefer. They still haven't revealed the hundreds of thousands of dollars wasted on lawsuits that were unwinnable from the git go. To me that's unforgivable. Even if they had assurances from the county attorney on those lawsuits they should never have happened.

Dunn wrote a letter to the Citizen a few weeks back and tried to defend his action re the sign ordinance suit and had the gaul to accuse Maxwell of being a criminal because he objected to their unconstitutional ordinance. Again, unforgivable.

I am not going to try and tell you how to vote, but I would certainly encourage you not to waste a vote for lack of knowledge of the candidates. Call Eric Maxwell and have coffee or lunch with him. You might find reason to re-assess the use of that Donald Duck vote.

Finally, do you know any lawyer personally? I once stereotyped lawyers myself, but after entering professional life, I learned how wrong it is to do that. Just throwing out a thought here, for what it's worth.

Don't worry. I've not missed an election since the mid eighties and I've never wasted a vote. To answer your question some of my best friends are lawyers. But please don't tell that to anyone. There are times when an attorney is of extreme value to ones business or defense. Please take note that there is a reason (trial lawyers in particular)have the reputations they have. This is not something I'm making up. Plus a good reputable attorney will share with you the embarrassment they have for most of their peers.

Thanks Tonto for your concern. I will only say that it's time for Greg to go. And Donald Duck is an honorable sort for the most part. I still think that Jack Smith is the safe candidate....again whatever that means.
