Parents in or near Peachtree City and Tyrone, get ready for the great student shuffle of 2006.

School system spokesperson Melinda Berry-Dreisbach said this week that more than 500 students in those areas may be switched to different elementary schools next year.

Last month, the Fayette County Board of Education announced it was looking at realigning the elementary school lines because of overcrowding at three elementary schools: Peachtree City Elementary, Peeples Elementary and Burch Elementary.

Board members also said the middle school and high school attendance lines would be examined because the system will be opening a new middle school in 2008.

But this week, officials postponed looking at high school and middle school lines until next year.

“There’re several large projects that are being looked at and we want to figure out what impact they’ll have on the school system before we start adjusting those lines,” said Berry-Dreisbach.

But the system does plan to unveil new attendance maps for the elementary schools at its Nov. 14 board meeting. Currently, the system plans on moving 150 students from Peachtree City Elementary, 257 from Peeples and 97 from Burch.

Berry-Dreisbach said the shuffling of students would leave 391 students at Peachtree City Elementary; 567 at Peeples and and 623 at Burch. Current capacities at the schools are 512 at Peachtree City Elementary; 737 at Peeples and 662 at Burch.

While she does not know where the moved students will wind up, she said there is excess capacity at some of the schools.

“Tyrone Elementary has a capacity of 462 students, but we’ve only got 406 students there,” she said.

Maps of the new elementary boundaries will be unveiled at the meeting. After the presentation, the maps will be available for review at the elementary schools as well as the Fayette County Board of Education. The proposal will sit on the table for 30 days to give the public time to examine the maps and offer input. The board plans to vote on the elementary boundaries at the regular December meeting.

Peachtree City Elementary is the oldest primary school in the city and is located on Wisdom Road near the center of the city.

Peeples Elementary is part of the Starr’s Mill school complex just beyond Peachtree City’s southern border.

Burch Elementary is located just outside Tyrone’s northeastern boundary near Sandy Creek High School.

It appears that some decsions have already been made. I make that conclusion because the article sites the specific number of students being moved from various schools. Here's a couple questions one may ask before the Board disrupts the kids impacted. How many special "exemptions" have been granted to some students that currently reside outside the current lines for each school? Also, does the Board have a firm grasp on how many students attend elementary school in Fayette County but actually reside in Clayton County? It's happening folks, but many are turning a blind eye. Those that are currently getting special treatment or abusing the system should be impacted first, then let's see what must be accomplished to relieve the over crowding.
