Don't Miss doing this in Atlanta this Summer!

I hoped to pick the brains of you folks in order to find some hidden pearls here in the Atlanta area.

I have company coming soon, and they wanted to see the sites. Having lived here for 27 years, I tend to be blinded by those things I've seen a dozen times. So please give me some feed back of those things you have found or that you recommend as a MUST SEE for visitors.

My brief list.

1. The New Aquarium. Not seen it. Always too busy to get in. When is the best time to try?

2. Six Flags...ARGH, nope, not going there ever again. Same rides-just dirtier, too many rowdy kids, same long lines, same heat, same $4 cokes.

3. Stone Mountain. Nice, but crowded and too far to go and return without exhaustion.

4. Warm Springs? not been yet, heard its nice, but short and brief.

5. Calloway. Been there, very pretty but not overwhelming.

6. Braves games...Not the way the bullpen is playing.

7. Downtown Atlanta? Too much crime, too much traffic. But I'll venture there for the special plays and exhibits. Coca Cola Museum, Underground, ?

8. Atlanta Motor Speedway, Only twice a year, and how is that fun, seeing people making left turns for 500 miles.

9. Amphitheater- Very nice, but its a hit or miss on the entertainment.

10. ?

So its taking the kids bowling, having cookouts at the pool, going to the movies In NEWNAN, fishing, golfing, texas hold'em.

What else is out there to do for this summer?

During the day, downtown is fine, I promise. I'm down there enough to say that. A trip to the Aquarium (go when they open at 8 a.m. when it is the least crowded) is worth it. You can go over to do the CNN tour as well. Then head over to the Varsity, which is always entertaining and affordable. You can totally skip Underground. It is half empty and nothing worth seeing.

The Braves may not be playing worth a hoot but consider taking a tour of the Ted. It's great fun and you get to see part of the Ted few ever see. I am not a big sports fan and I loved it.

Fernbank is indeed great. The Chocolate exhibit is good for adults and kids. And the dinosaurs are always there.

A trip to the Atlanta History Center is well worth it. They have terrific permanent exhibits on Bobby Jones and the Civil War. Not to mention the Tullie Smith farm located behind the AHC that show the life of a working farmhouse in the mid 19th century. Kids love it. It's also very close to Johnny Rocket's and the Cheesecake Factory.

The Atlanta Botanical Gardens is great for kids and adults. The new Niki in the Garden exhibit is fun and the kids will love the Children's Garden. If they're bored, they can run off steam in Piedmonth Park.

The laser show at Stone Mountain Park is always a crowd pleaser.

I can personally say that the Little White House in Warm Springs is fantastic. They recently expanded the museum and it's top notch. They've also restored the rehabilitation pools where FDR was treated for his polio. Have lunch at the Bulloch House (great buffet) and head over to Callaway Gardens. Even driving through Roosevelt State Park is a fun activity. Warm Springs also has some nice shops.

Cochran Mill Nature Center in Fairburn is a neat place to take kids. They have a learning center with lots of reptiles, birds, amphibians, etc. (No mammals at this time.) Also a great place for picnics, nature trails, etc. Mon - Sat from 9am to 3 pm.

How old are the kids your trying to entertain?

Fernbank is great. You can spend the day there, relax, see an IMAX movie. We love going there.

Atlantic Station is NICE. IKEA rocks! Lots of choices in restaurants and shopping. They have a huge movie theater there, which I'm sure is very clean (no rats).

Have you been to the Zoo lately? I like going there.

What's wrong with Dixieland? Dixieland is great on armband day. My nephew from out of town, who is 19, still thinks it's cool to go there!

I hear Noah's Ark Animal Preserve in Henry County is nice for the kids. It's free I think.

Also, the Wetlands Center in Clayton County is cool. It's free.

Apparently the latest is a monster. It's been a while since I've been there. I may check it out.

The AMS hosts "Legends" racing on Thursdays I believe. Short 1/4 mile track, lots of cheap fun.

If you want some real wet fun, take a ride to Nantahala Outdoor Center in the Mountains of North Carolina and take a raft ride. Good, clean, family fun.

I agree, been there three times now and enjoyed it everytime, but its a serious day trip, if not a weekend trip away.

I highly recommend this for families too.

There is of course, Dixie land, but then again....
