PTC seeks railroad chemical list

Construction underway on train parking area

Peachtree City Mayor Harold Logsdon is sending a letter to CSX Railroad opposing the company’s plans to build a parking area along the track just north of Home Depot.

It may be too late since construction is already well underway. This section of track backs up to several homes, and since the trains often carry hazardous chemicals the project has sparked safety concerns.

It is also unclear if the city has any authority to regulate the project in any way, since railroads are governed by federal rules.

Logsdon said Thursday morning that he didn’t recall hearing about any security plans for the rail siding project at a recent meeting between city and railroad officials.

“It’s unbelievable that this has gone up so quickly,” Logsdon said. “It caught us totally off guard.”

The city is asking for a full listing of all chemicals the railroad transports through Peachtree City so the fire department and EMS crews can be prepared should a leak or spill occur, Logsdon said.

City officials were told that the parking area will hold a train up to 110 cars long. The company has cited growing traffic on the rails as the main reason the siding is needed; it would allow certain trains to go off the main rail so they can be passed by others.

Like they're going to park a train loaded with dangerous chemicals and walk away to grab a smoke or go to Wal-Mart. The danger comes from moving trains, which we've dealt with for decades now. We should welcome the parked trains in order to draw out the wannabe gangsters in PTC to "tag" the cars so we can arrest them.

Thanks for the reporting on this, John. We need some direct answers from CSX, though. The question isn't whether they need a side rail to park cars -- I'm sure they have their reasons.
The question is: WHY HERE??? They own hundreds of miles of track in Georgia, much of it through the middle of nowhere. Yet they decide to locate this side rail inside a city that prides itself on aesthetics, mere feet from homes, and in a spot that could undo plans for needed road improvements. Unbelievable. CSX needs to be held accountable, as do city leaders who were apparently unaware of this unfolding under their noses.

Couldn't agree more. For the live of me I don't understand why they need another one, when they have one already in Tyrone. As you already pointed out, this is going pretty much in the backyard of some homes. Of course that also begs the question what nitwitts approved building homes almost right on top of the existing tracks? Go figure.
