Eat out? More choices coming

One of the most scenic vistas in Fayette County will soon be the site of another restaurant.

The Old Mill Fish and Grill is applying tomorrow night for its on-premise liquor consumption license at the Fayette County Commission. The license is being sought by Neil Davis, who owns the land around the old Bennett’s Mill on Ga. Highway 54 between Fayetteville and Peachtree City.

When Davis first purchased the property more than a decade ago, he operated it as a restaurant, but then leased the property out to what became the Olde Mill Steakhouse. After a lease agreement couldn’t be worked out with the tenant, the restaurant has remained vacant for more than a year.

“He’s decided to re-open the restaurant himself,” said county Executive Assistant Carol Chandler.

Chandler could not provide an opening day for the restaurant.

But the Old Mill is not the only new restaurant for Fayette’s diners. Partner’s II Pizza is set to open its fourth location and will now offer Fayetteville patrons a taste of their award-winning pizza. The newest location will go in the Publix shopping center on Ga. Highway 85 south, near Mike & C’s Family Sports Grill.

In Peachtree City, the Three Dollar Cafe has opened on Ga. Highway 74 after what seemed like an unusually long construction delay. The restaurant is noted for its beer, bar-food and sports-loving fans.

On the other side of Hwy. 74, Taco Mac is currently in the process of renovating the old On the Border restaurant next to Pike’s nursery. The restaurant started as a small outpost in Virginia-Highlands in Atlanta and has grown to a large chain across the Southeast specializing in authentic Buffalo wings and a huge variety of beer.

Just up Hwy. 74 in Tyrone, Bamboo Star and Burrito Brothers have opened in the shopping center across the street from Publix. There is also a rumored Italian restaurant that is part of Burt Clark’s new development that features the Legacy Theater.

After months of seeing restaurants close, it appears Fayette is getting its appetite back for dining out.

Only when Whataburger moves into this area will we finally have a great hamburger place. 17 of their restaurants are being built in Birmingham and 7 are being built in Montgomery.

How about a Steak and Shake at the abandoned Fuddruckers building?

We all also need to remember something that is not mentioned in this story. Part of the reason the Old Mill Steakhouse closed is due to the fact that they failed their health inspection more than once with scores in the 60's. There was also a civil lawsuit against them due to problems with their septic system backing up into the grease pits of the place. I hope they've gotten these problems fixed or they'll be back in a "mess" again. I think PTC needs some other stuff in addition to a Krystals when we're talking fast food. I think they need a Burger King or a Hardee's. I wonder what will go in the old FudRucker building? Or, in the Buckhead Brewery building?

I have to honestly say that I am dissapointed in their pizza pie. I honestly don't understand how they won any kind of Award for it. Unless of course it was some kind of self serving award like the chain pizza joints give themselves (ie, "4 out of 5 Americans say they prefer xxxxx Pizza"). To me PIIP is just the same kind of chain, out of the can pizza with no heart and soul like all the other places. Yes, I enjoy them from time to time, but just like Krystal's (see below) it's neither memorable nor something I could eat more than once every few months.

What I could really go for is some real authentic pizza made with heart and gusto by a passionate Italian! Now that's something you can eat just about every other day!

I also miss greek, yugoslavian and german cuisine! Oh boy, who's up for a European food trip?

I know it's not very popular, but I've been craving some Olive Garden breadsticks for the longest time. I'm just glad we're getting two places to grab a beer after midnight. Too bad Ginza closed!

While we're wishing here, how about a Krispy Kreme?

My real pipe dream is for the Mennonites in Waynesboro to open up a satellite office of their bakery here. Best donuts ever: coated with a thick sugary glaze, thick and chock full of chewy goodness.

If you're ever in Augusta, it's worth the 20-mile trip out of your way to head south and pay them a visit. Just make sure you call first to make sure they're open. The hours were kinda funny last I was there.

You mean as in the Mennonite religious types?

They do have seriously great bakeries!

So do the Amish.

Where can I get a decent one in Fayette County? Preferrably grouper. One that's not deep fried in grease, tastes good, and is a decent size where you can actually see fish on each end of the bun?

You mean the little tail at one end and the big ole catfish head with eyes, lips, etc. peeking out at the other end? Actually had them years ago in Thailand. Be careful what you wish for.

No, no, no. I know exactly what he means. This is a well-fried filet that just can't be contained by the bun. Kind of a Victoria's Secret of fish sandwiches, ya know?

You assume since I was in Thailand and in the military that I'm a guy? No way.

Nevertheless, the sandwich in question was in a hoagie roll and about 9 inches long and really, really good. I even ate the eyes.

Anyone can see from the photograph that the mudcat is a shecat.

The antecedent of the pronoun ("he") was Buckwheat (Mumember me? Otay!)

Just putting two and two together here: I see that someone claims the grouper sandwich at the new $3 Cafe is good.

I love grouper sandwiches. I hate sports bars.

I make a killer beer-battered grouper (which can become a sandwich) that is awesome with a cold Sweetwater IPA.

Shoot. Now you've got me running to the store for ingredients!

I still say that we need a PUB!!! Not a bar--especially not a sports bar. A pub. Good beer. Good grub (including bangers and mash) and good, stimulating conversation (no TVs, please).

If the one @ Famous Fish was good then I would expect the one at GA Shrimp will be the same. If you haven't ever eaten there you should check it out anyway.

I know this will sound redneck, but will we ever get a Krystal's in PTC. Yes I admit tht those little "gut bombers" are one of my guilty pleasure's. My husband has never tried them, and vow's he never will!

A lady that loves Krystals. Every mans dream. I'll bet you were a hit in college. "Who want to go to Krystals"? And there's Loveptc lining up.

Funny though........My lovely bride has me figured out. If I come home with a little indigestion the first words out of her mouth is...."How many Krystals did you eat for lunch".

is an all american eatery that harks back to the late 50s thru the 80s. Be proud of yourself, and sneak up to Fayetteville occasionally for the "gut buster" you love. That's what I do.

You guys should never admit this in public.

Neil Davis the owner of old mill fish & grill did not own the steakhouse. The health inspection was the steakhouses fault who were leasers of the property. The fish & grill passed the health inspection with a 100 and are doing fine. They did not fail fail fail. they went out of business at the mill around because they had another job to attend to and leased the property to the steakhouse whos lease ran out last year.
