Tyrone gets fed seizure check

The Tyrone Police Department was presented with a large check this week as part of its participation on the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department Drug Task Force.

Tyrone was given a $46,177 check for its share of federally seized drug money from a recent sting that the task force assisted with. The funds can only be spent on law enforcement equipment or training, according to federal regulations. Tyrone Police Chief Johnny Hay said he was planning to hold onto the money for a little while.

“We really use it for things we need that aren’t in the budget,” Hay said, noting that it serves as a contingency fund.

The town may use the money to purchase another patrol car, Hay said. Tyrone’s department has 15 full-time officers including the one officer dedicated entirely to the drug task force, Hay noted.
