No decision on Commerce Dr. parking

A parking problem on Commerce Drive in front of the new World Gym in Peachtree City will have to wait two weeks for a solution.

City staff recommended last Thursday that on-street parking should be limited to a small section of the eastern side of Commerce Drive, giving room for about six vehicles.

Vehicles currently parking on the west side of the street are blocking the sight lines for motorists passing by, said City Engineer David Borkowski.

World Gym owner Dar Thompson — who also ran for mayor in the 2005 election — asked if parking could also be allowed on the west side of the street in two more locations: one north of the staff-proposed parking area and another to the south.

Council voted to table the matter for two weeks so staff could evaluate Thompson’s request.

Thompson noted that the Peachtree City Planning Commission asked him to reduce the number of parking spaces for the gym, saying they wouldn’t all be used. The original proposal had 176 parking spaces, but it was reduced to 132, Thompson added.

Borkowski said there is an undeveloped area on World Gym’s tract that could be used for parking, and several more parallel parking spaces could be added near a retaining wall on the property. Thompson said the undeveloped area is earmarked for an outparcel that will be sold, with plans approved for a two-floor building totaling 12,000 sq. ft.

Councilwoman Cyndi Plunkett said the current on-street parking situation at the gym is dangerous.

“I’ve had a couple of people complain about getting through there, especially after work hours,” said Councilman Steve Boone.

“The long-term solution is I’d like to see no parking on Commerce Drive,” said Councilwoman Judi-ann Rutherford.

Thompson has made arrangements with an adjacent property owner for his staff to park there, but another nearby business declined the city’s request to help provide parking for gym patrons and employees.

It is against the law to park in a curve obstructing driving vision and forcing vehicles potentially into on-coming vehicles.

Not really enforce. But is there.

When the applicant for a site plan - in this case Dar Thompson, tells you how many parking spaces he needs, why do you think you know better?

Obviously you were wrong, just like you were wrong with the Wisdom Road reataurant center. Don't you think that part-time planning commissioners should listen to full-time business owners?

I have no idea what you think you are doing by limiting parking spaces, but if you even know the answer to that - please tell us all so we know what to do when we have to make a decision to drive, walk or stay home for dinner or a trip to the gym.

I have been puzzled by this ever since I was following south behind an SUV & it just stopped. Was there an armadillo crossing the road? No, soon a very well dressed lady just exit her parked SUV. I have since passed by and noticed vehicles parked on the street when tha parking lot is not nearly full. I just figured they either wanted to get a little more excercise or didn't want to get their vehicles "dinged".
