N. Fayette park price quadruples

Talk about sticker shock.

Jaws fell slack last week during the County Commission’s budget hearings as Recreation Director Anita Godbee told the board it would take $10 million to finish all three phases of Kenwood Park in north Fayette.

“We were told it was going to be $2.5 million. How did it quadruple in price?” demanded Chairman Greg Dunn.

Godbee said that was the latest cost estimates provided from the consultant, and she asked the board to increase her capital budget this year from $500,000 to $1 million to move further along with the first phase of the park. She said the first phase would cost $3.7 million, while the next two phases would cost $2.5 million and $5.1 million, respectively.

“We may have to take a longer time to develop that park,” Dunn said.

The board did agree to add $500,000 to this year’s budget, but made corresponding cuts for improvements at McCurry Park and Starr’s Mill.

The board approved the master plan of the park in early 2004.

The 175-acre park is located off Kenwood Road and Ga. Highway 279, and would be almost as large as Atlanta’s famed Piedmont Park.

“This will be one of our crown jewels,” said Commission Chairman Greg Dunn in 2004.

The master plan was developed by consultant David West, who works with Atlanta-based Robert and Company.

Included in the park would be:
• Four baseball fields.
• Four softball fields.
• Two soccer fields.
• One multipurpose field and a running track.
• Eight tennis courts and four basketball courts.

The county’s northern section, now increasingly multi-racial in nature, currently has no developed public park.

I could almost *walk* from my home to the site of the proposed park, but I don't anticipate spending time there.

Now, the Allman Brothers Band used to play for free in Piedmont Park in the late 1960s. If you can get the Allman Brothers Band (seen them lately? They're phenomenal!) to play in this new park, then you've got my support. Smiling

Why is it that you would not want the young people from Clayton and Fulton county to enjoy the fruits of your labor? Don't you think that is a selfish and racist stance? Do you not know that the new Fayette South Fulton Park must be located within walking distances of Marta? Why do you think that the young people will come just to cause trouble? Can't you see they are reaching out to you in a neighborly way? Do you not think that Greg and Linda have thought this out fully? Why can't you seem to understand that for a couple of million dollars more that comes out to only a wee .01226698 cents per day per captia of the county budget that they will fund youth programs for the enrichment challenged youth? Do you not see how important Loitering lessons can be for a childs early childhood development skills? How about the new Smash and Run fields for the middle schoolers? Are you so selfish that you cannot grasp the benefits of the Drive By Shooting Range and the Gang Speak classes? What about the new art classes teaching advanced Grafitti Design. Or how to safely cross a street and dodge cars while jaywalking during high speed traffic times without getting hit. Now ask yourself....Why would you ever question the intentions of this magnificent and talented commission? Well....you know me. I'm justasskin??????????????

and talking about crown jewels, i have never seen any one put there crown jewels on the nighbors fence and expect them to stay there intact and in good condition,,,,, hey i got an idea cut propert taxes on veterans. (not only if there100% disabled)
i grew up in fay and pushing 50 and i am getting to the point i cant
afford to live here, keep in mind a lot of your residents have had
pay cuts not pay increses, i have not had one in 4 yrs
get to the point you there for cost effectively running the county
and cutting taxes. or else get off the park and let someone else
play this game your in

or was it just a blanket across the board to everyone that made a comment,

the park idea is stupid,
and where the location is even more stupid

The park is a bad idea all around

The earlier "poser" comment referred to your constant use of mispelled words. It made it appear you were trying to come across as less intelligent than you are. Don't get me wrong were all going to mispell words on here cause noones sitting here with a dictionary in their lap put your prior postings, well, go back and read them. Now your suddenly spelling and using decent grammar.

Get used to it Harvey. 50% of the posters here have multiple handles they use to make their points. I had one and he's gone. If they disappeared there would be nothing to read here. Agree or disagree that's a fact.

"Fancypants"---- I don't know why but you did spark a thought or two with your cheer. I think that this Park is a boondoogle and it is what Dunn and his cohorts want and not what the county needs. His federal government military bureaucrat mind says "Just spend it."

Dunn originally pushed this North Fayette park and did so when the cost estimates were $2.5 million. One would like to assume that some care was given to planning and oversight (although we know that rarely happens with government spending, even locally). Did they carefully study this proposal in the first place ? Do we NEED this park? Is there demographic evidence to support the park ? Or is this just another courthouse chock full of everyone's wish lists ?

Obviously this park is a WANT and not a NEED. If it was needed, then the original concept at $2.5 million was justifiable-- it would accomplish the goal. Now that the price is $10m those original assumptions are now out the window.

$10 million for Clayton and Fulton county with no real benefit for Fayette County, except the pleasure of knowing we paid for it. Whooohooo!

Couldn't have said it better myself. Fayette County can't afford to pick up school children less than a quarter mile from the safety of their home but they can sink TEN MILLION DOLLARS into another Piedmont Park. Such nastiness.

Submitted by rmoc on Wed, 05/10/2006 - 10:35pm.

I am sorry but this is silly...The other parks in Fayette were built with a combination of funds from the county and donations. The area that they propose is also closer to Clayton than many northside neighborhoods..Are you telling me someone at Gingercake and 92 can't drive an extra 2 minutes to McCurry or Kiwanis? I also understand that many of the facilities in the county were not totally built with county funds..The Brooks Football Field House was build by donations and volunteer labor from the business community. This is not about race but about the idea of entitlement..let the government pay for everything...I couldn't care less who moves to Fayette as long as they are fiscal conservatives and not commies. 10 million dollars that will come out of our tax dollars. I think a few basketball courts and some tennis courts would be fine because they don't really exist elsewhere. If they want fieldhouses the volunteers can get out their hammers and nails.

Lets have a lovely park like what was once a lovely facility in Lovejoy..the facility is 6 or 7 years old and has become a place where many folks won't go at night. If the people who use it are forced to fork up a few dollars then they will care for it..just like a renter versus an owner..When will North Fayette Homeowners Association stop whining about entitlements...People in Fayette County have been driving to McCurry for 20 years...

GREG-SPEAK

Sticker shock occurred at Stonewall when Greg realized that the long promised North Fayette park will cost a whopping $10 million dollars. Clinging to the bare positive attribute of protective land planning, it looks like Greg may have blown his last life line. With this park, maybe the Commission should pay for SWAT training for Clayton and Fulton deputies, too, given the existing crime increases at The Pavillion.

Here are samples from this meeting of Greg-Speak— saying one thing and meaning another:

******* “We may have to take a longer time to develop that park,” Dunn said.

TRANSLATION: “Ah, crap....To fund this one we will have to soak the taxpayers over a longer term.”

Explanation: Huge increase in price doesn’t matter to Greg the career bureaucrat, and certainly he can’t say “no” to North Fayette after he and State Rep. Elmer Fudd could not deliver district voting. So, what he really means is he will have to phase it in. Kind of like the Commissioners strategy on annual tax assessments rather than the cheaper method of every three years as permitted by state law----- put the frog in the pot and slowly turn the heat up. After a few years, we get fully soaked and boiled.

******* ““This will be one of our crown jewels,” said Commission Chairman Greg Dunn.

TRANSLATION: “It will be worth it— please believe me— I mean it— I know we have egg on our face.”

Explanation: Now that Greg has thoroughly given up his check book to North Fayette, he has to some how hope like hell he can mollify everyone else in the county after the county has been nickel and diming every one from Brooks to Tyrone.

******* “We were told it was going to be $2.5 million. How did it quadruple in price?” demanded Chairman Greg Dunn.

TRANSLATION: “ I know that the same people that did cost estimating for this project are the same people that keep tabs on our legal fees/ county attorney budget but you guys are about as attentive as the Sewage Plant operator in PTC.”

Explanation: Greg doesn’t mind pissing it away. Its just with exponential increases like this one, he can’t even fool John Thompson that he’s careful with money.

I actually agree that the northeast side of the county deserved a park to shorten families drives to their games. Race has nothing to do with this. It was, however, political pork that got way out of hand while Dunn was looking to muster votes for Phiefer during his election. If you spend 10 million on this project it won't be the "Crown Jewel of Fayette County" it will be the stink bomb.

I don't think it will happen because I think Dunn and Wells are gone. I think the money already spent on the land should be salvadged by building some ball fields or recreational fields consistent with the demand for the residents of that area. The original 2.5 million figure presented to the taxpayers should be adhered to. Period.

In the spirit of "Knowing your Customer" I think Mr. West may want to consider a slight revision to his plan.

Included in the park would be:
• Four baseball fields.- make it 8
• Four softball fields. - don't need any
• Two soccer fields. - delete
• One multipurpose field and a running track. - ok
• Eight tennis courts and four basketball courts. - 0 tennis courts and 30 basketball courts

This would be cheaper.

This park was not necessary in the first place and I completely agree with the other posting that said it would turn in to a gangster hang out. This county has plenty of centrally located public parks that are available to everyone, regardless of the color of their skin. That is all that park is about anyway, the "multi-racial" northern section of the county not wanting to play at the other "white" parks!

I didn't want to be the first to say this, but, yes, this is likely.

In another post, I say that I could *almost* walk to the location of the park. Heck, it's just a sweatless stroll down Kenwood from here.

I *suppose* that there might be some benefit for me in property values in this area should I decide to sell. Proximity to another "Piedmont Park" is a nice selling point.

But the location really is just a stone's throw from the Clayton line, and such a place will be the first place that Clayton loiterers will think of.
I wouldn't take my grandkids. I wouldn't go at night. I don't play basketball....

Take the 10 mil and put it into the schools. Better: Don't take the 10 mil at all.
