Gas leak causes 54 West traffic snarl

A Tuesday morning gas leak forced officials to shut down part of Ga. Highway 54 west in Peachtree City for more than four hours.

Traffic going in both directions had to be re-routed while three crews from Atlanta Gas Light worked to gain access to the damage. A crew boring under the road for part of the highway construction struck the gas main, officials said.

The highway was shut down from Ga. Highway 74 to the bridge over the CSX railroad tracks. It re-opened mid-afternoon.

Atlanta Gas Light should be commended for their response to the situation, given that the area is so highly traveled, said Peachtree City Assistant Fire Chief Ed Eiswerth.

“They did the best they could,” Eiswerth said.

Anyone see the need for a logical and safe extension of McDuff Parkway in this story?

Actually, a complete by-pass for west bound traffic for both north and south traffic.

And, I say again, a second entrance to the shopping center from 74.

That combo will do more to help Panterra than anything else will. Not to mention exiting the shopping area at heavier use times when making a left turn.

Keeping it real and to the core of the issue, not the peripherals.
