Why such long school days here in the South?

I don’t think it’s fair that the schools up North are in school for 6 hours, while J.C. Booth is at school for 7 hours and 40 minutes.

Everyone says it is because of snow days, so in case we have a snow-day, we won’t have to make it up at the end of the year. But we should only spend the first few weeks going longer, not the whole year.

I for one leave for school at 7:30 a.m, and get back at 4:20 p.m. In the North, you would leave for school at about 7 and get back at about 2:30.

I am away from home for 8 hours and 50 minutes while they are only away from home for 7 hours and 30 minutes. Do you think that is fair?

Well, I don’t. I think that they should shorten the days here.

Dear Casey, I'm not sure what school "up North" you're talking about. I don't know where you got your information from. Being an "up North" school employee for years, I have found that each state has different criteria for education. Did you check to see how long the school year is? Every state has a minimum; however, many states "up North" (and all over the country) are extending the school year. Did you check to see if the school is year-round? One "up North" high school I worked at had the first class start at 6:50am. School ended at 3:30pm. Another school in yet another "up North" state high school started at 7:30am and ended at 2:30pm. Sounds like you're in middle school. The "up North" middle school in yet another state started at 7:00am and ended at 3:30pm. And, not to forget the elementary bunch, an "up North" school started at 9am and ended at 4:30pm. So, you're not getting shafted. Hopefully you're getting an excellent education that will fully prepare you for college and the rest of your life. And, remember Casey, life is not fair. Sincerely, Della
