Sr. tax break on ballot

When Peachtree City voters head to the polls Nov. 8, they won’t just be picking a mayor and two council members for the next four years.

Voters will also decide whether to approve a homestead tax exemption which would reduce the taxable value of homes by $5,000 for seniors 65 and over who have incomes of $30,000 or less. This reduction would only apply for city taxes and not taxes levied by the county or the school board.

If approved, qualifying citizens would save $26.51 based on this year’s millage rate, said City Public Information Officer Betsy Tyler. The exemption would not begin until next year, however.

To take advantage of the exemption, citizens will have to bring their income tax returns to City Hall so staff can verify they qualify for the income guideline, Tyler said. That process will need to be done each year, she added.

There are 2,512 seniors who could qualify for the exemption according to the 2000 U.S. Census but only 1,570 estimated households will be eligible according to city estimates.

The maximum cost to the city for this plan is $41,000, but that’s assuming that all seniors in the city will qualify under the income guidelines. The city has calculated estimates ranging from $6,220 if only 15 percent of seniors meet the income requirement to $12,441 if 30 percent of seniors meet the requirement.

Why the last-minute inclusion on the ballot, if not to try to buy the senior vote? If this has been discussed for a while, why wasn't it on the ballot sooner so that he would have had time to address any objections and boost its odds of passing? Pitiful, but not unexpected. C'mon, folks, let's put an adult leader in office!

I love the accusations without any research.

This went before City Council months ago. In fact, nearly a year ago. They approved the referendum 4-1 with Rutherford dissenting.

The meeting was a public meeting and is in public record.

I just feel that people should do a little research before launching attacks on any of the candidates.

What's the purpose of a tax break like this? Arent we hearing that the city is broke? Why do only senior citizens geting this tax break? Regardless of how much or little the city loses b/c of this, it means that everyone who ISN"T 65+ will be picking up the slack. And why? Because these people didn't plan better for their retirement? I'm trying to plan for mine now- I can't afford to contribute to someone elses.

First off these people grew up in an era where they made $4,000.00 / year and not $400,000.00 / year. That being said, are you so worried over a person on a fixed income of less than $30,000.00 a year getting back $26.51?

Maybe you haven't planned as well as you should have.

First, these little "tax breaks" for special groups add up. Whether its subsidizing some groups gas or electric bills or someones homestead exemption. What Im worried about is making my own retirement, not someone elses. I have planned to well apparently-- someone thinks I can take care of not only my own family but everyone elses. Maybe these folks shouldve planned as well as I did.

$26.51 that's all? Not $26.51 per thousand dollars of evaluation? Why in the world would council spend so much time on something so insignificant?

Yep, we are going to save folks a whopping $26.51 a year. Think of all the time and energy that has gone into this deal. All a charade that doesn't about to squat just to suck up to the old folks. Steve Brown, you are a master manipulator, a spin doctor, but more than anything an insincere slick politician who will try to put your stamp on this joke. You will do anything to get re-elected. Not this time, Stevie, not this time...

The reason that the City Council sent this referendum on to the state, is the Peachtree City Senior Council asked for this on the behalf of a few seniors that are trying to get by.

Stuart Kourajian met with the Senior Council and they apparently convinced him that despite the relief only being $26.51 per senior, that it was necessary. He voted to pass this on while Judi voted not to send it to the state.

$26.51 can provide enough food to feed some of these seniors for 3 days. Many of the seniors that will qualify for this exemption are barely getting by. It has been said that they did not plan well for their retirement, but they helped build this city and sent some of these snot nosed brats to college while sacrificing their own future.

I personally have no problem in giving them back $26.51 and while I am working for my retirement too, I can have some compassion on someone who truly needs the help.

In other words, it doesn't amount to a hill of beans. Just election year shenanigans to get the older vote. Slick Willy could learn a few things from Brown. What a complete and total phony, and everybody knows it.

Sure he is, but don't assume everybody knows it. He did get elected last time. Nobody in this town pays attention. As much as I dislike Cal and this paper it is worth saying that by putting in the forums and blogs he is helping the process of communication which will help unelect Brown. God, what a canker sore he has been.
