What's the deal?Today I want to answer the question asked by Adam when he realized he was naked and alone. It is the same question asked by Napoleon on his first attempt to mount his steed. In fact, I think it is the same question posed by Congresswoman McKinney last week when she was stopped at the Capitol with her new “Kramer” hairdo. It is a question that has haunted all of us at one time or another, and that is “WHAT’S THE DEAL?” Let’s begin with our high school golf coaches. Yeah, I’m talking about guys like Tony Daniel at Landmark and Chad Phillips at Starr’s Mill. You should be ashamed. Do you good folks of Fayette County realize your tax dollars are going to pay for these men and several other golfers throughout our school system to “coach” golf? WHAT’S THE DEAL? This is a coaching position that should be reserved for the Athletic Director, like me for instance. This will eliminate spending money on extra coaching supplements which in turn will allow the school system to purchase more library books or much needed technology upgrades, or a bigger office for the AD, etc. Why should Chad Phillips and Tony Daniel have the best tan on campus anyway? Besides, Mike Davis already has his own athletic department golf cart. Has anyone noticed Our Lady of Mercy extending absolutely no mercy to her county neighbors? WHAT’S THE DEAL? OLM has produced a powerhouse boys and girls track program this year that has proven to be one of the premier programs in the county. They shocked everyone in the county championships two weeks ago. This is a school with an enrollment of just 350. But wait, have they forgotten that Landmark is the Class A track and field bully in the GHSA? We’ll find out next week as these two schools go head to head in the 5A Boys and Girls Region Meets at Landmark. Right now, I give the edge to Mercy. Recently, I was told there was quite a riot on the campus of McIntosh High School. Students from Starr’s Mill had invaded the campus with sticks and masks. My first thought was, WHAT’S THE DEAL? These are two great schools with great kids. How could this happen? Is there no hope for the future? It was then I opened the Citizen newspaper to the best darn sports section in the Southern Crescent and discovered that the riot did indeed result in blood and bruises. It was McIntosh beating Starr’s Mill 17-8 in the first-ever battle of lacrosse between these two schools. The crowd numbered several hundred. Did you know that lacrosse is the fastest growing high school sport in Georgia? It is a great spectator sport and both McIntosh and Starr’s Mill are having very successful inaugural seasons. Expect to see more rioting between these two rivals for many years to come! WHAT’S THE DEAL? Are you kidding me? The Whitewater boy’s soccer team is ranked #2 in AAAA and the Lady Wildcats are ranked 5th. That is incredible! The school doesn’t even have a senior class yet. I dare say if you take away the senior athletes at all the other area schools they’d have mediocre seasons at best. Just incredible. And what is going on inside the ball park at Starr’ Mill? WHAT’S THE DEAL? Do you know how hard it is to be 19-0 in high school baseball, especially in the south where the talent pool is so much stronger than any other region of the country? This is an awesome display of talent, coaching and poise. I can’t wait to unleash these guys against the north side of Atlanta come play-off time! The sleeper in boy’s 5A soccer this year has to be Fayette County. They are 12-3-1 right now and seem to be under everyone’s radar. WHAT’S THE DEAL? Of course, if I’m a Tiger I wouldn’t have it any other way going into the play-offs. Lastly, how about McIntosh’s Brendan Hall? The kid is on fire. He is impressive on the mound as well as at the plate. If he’s not striking out 10 batters he’s driving in 10 runs. WHAT’S THE DEAL? Now is the perfect time to bring back football at Cal State Fullerton while Hall is on campus. He could be a two-sport Titan! Trust me the kid is good enough. Congrats Brendan on a great career as well as being a model of class and character. login to post comments | Ted Knapp's blog |
