Peachtree City's Fire Chief says its mosquito prevention program is limited, but "adequate."

Chief Stony Lohr briefed the City Council on the program last week at the request of Councilwoman Judi-ann Rutherford, who said she was concerned with the growing amount of areas along the city's cart path which have standing water.

Lohr said he places mosquito dunks of larvicide in areas of standing water near places where children congregate and where elderly persons live, since both groups are more susceptible to the mosquito-borne West Nile Virus.

For example, the area around All Children's Playground and the Field of Hope have been treated, along with areas near Southland Nursing Home and the Ashley Glen Assisted Living facility, Lohr said.

Also, the city responds to areas where it receives complaints of mosquito presence, but there haven't been many to date, Lohr said.

There is no need to treat the city's lakes if fish are present because they will naturally take care of the problem, Lohr said. The city does not treat all its catch basins, however, he added.

Citizens should remove all areas of standing water from their homes because they are a breeding ground for mosquitos, Lohr said.
