PTC may move youth footballThu, 03/30/2006 - 5:47pm

Peachtree CIty officials may relocate the youth football and cheerleading programs currently at Riley Field because of noise complaints from nearby residents. The youth football association has done all it can to reduce the noise, including putting a halt to the play-by-play announcing of games on the loudspeaker, according to Randy Gaddo, the city’s director of leisure services. The association has also turned away persons with noise-making devices and is working to get more field space elsewhere to eliminate games starting at 8 p.m., officials said. But that’s not enough for some residents in the area, who attended last week’s City Council retreat to ask for a permanent solution. One resident said she sometimes felt a prisoner in her own home due to the noise, and often she would go visit friends in the metro area to avoid the football noise entirely. Gaddo said one option could be to reduce the size of the program to eliminate out-of-county residents. Many of those participants are from Coweta County but they are needed to help round out teams, officials said. The program may be relocated to the Meade fields on Ga. Highway 74 south or to the Hwy. 74 south Baseball Soccer Complex; neither of those locations are near residential developments. Doing the latter would upset the youth soccer association which has been counting on expanding in the area, said Councilwoman Cyndi Plunkett, who formerly served on the city’s recreation commission. But the number of youth soccer participants hasn’t increased in recent years, she added. Council also discussed noise complaints about the Kedron multipurpose rink, but Gaddo said additions to the rink would soon be completed to enclose another portion of the building, buffering the nearby residents from the noise. If the program is moved, the city’s LaCrosse and soccer programs could be moved to Riley Field. “They are much quieter,” Plunkett noted. login to post comments |
