PTC may move youth football

Peachtree CIty officials may relocate the youth football and cheerleading programs currently at Riley Field because of noise complaints from nearby residents.

The youth football association has done all it can to reduce the noise, including putting a halt to the play-by-play announcing of games on the loudspeaker, according to Randy Gaddo, the city’s director of leisure services. The association has also turned away persons with noise-making devices and is working to get more field space elsewhere to eliminate games starting at 8 p.m., officials said.

But that’s not enough for some residents in the area, who attended last week’s City Council retreat to ask for a permanent solution.

One resident said she sometimes felt a prisoner in her own home due to the noise, and often she would go visit friends in the metro area to avoid the football noise entirely.

Gaddo said one option could be to reduce the size of the program to eliminate out-of-county residents. Many of those participants are from Coweta County but they are needed to help round out teams, officials said.

The program may be relocated to the Meade fields on Ga. Highway 74 south or to the Hwy. 74 south Baseball Soccer Complex; neither of those locations are near residential developments. Doing the latter would upset the youth soccer association which has been counting on expanding in the area, said Councilwoman Cyndi Plunkett, who formerly served on the city’s recreation commission. But the number of youth soccer participants hasn’t increased in recent years, she added.

Council also discussed noise complaints about the Kedron multipurpose rink, but Gaddo said additions to the rink would soon be completed to enclose another portion of the building, buffering the nearby residents from the noise.

If the program is moved, the city’s LaCrosse and soccer programs could be moved to Riley Field. “They are much quieter,” Plunkett noted.

I am just wondering if the people complaining about the noise are newcomers that bought houses close to Riley field. Kids have played football here for a very long time, in fact I played for the Packers from 1983-1985. Let's learn to leave things alone and adjust to the place you have moved to and let the kids play.

I can't believe that there are people out there who can't tolerate a little noise for a few months out of the year. Is it really all that bad to hear fans cheering on their players, to hear a few milk jugs with pennies in them, or to hear the occasional air horn burst? Have we gotten so self centered that we can't even let children and their families have a little fun?
First it was the Kedron Roller rink, now its Riley Field. What next...too much noise from the Golf balls being hit at Flat Creek? Too much noise from the Soccer and Baseball fields at McIntosh? How about too much noise in the summer from the Glenloch Pool?

Having had a son play with the Packers for the past few years, I think it would unfair to the children to exclude Coweta County residents at this time. I would guess that approximately 1/2 of the players are from Coweta County and the program needs funding as well as competition in order to succeed. A Peachtree City only organization would probably not do as well as the Packers have with Intra-County and by including players from Coweta, Brooks and Fayetteville. Moving the Packers to another complex would be the best solution so that the loud speaker could be used and sufficient parking was available.

Not to mention the amount of business that is brought into Peachtree City, from our Coweta Citizens. They spend huge amounts of time in Peachtree City during Football and Cheerleading season.

I've been with the Packer Cheerleading Program for 7 years. We are family!!! While I agree that we need more space for our football games, to eliminate our Coweta citizens would be catastrophic to the program. Many of the girls and boys in our program are from Coweta, and have been involved for 7 years plus. This group of kids are very close, like family, and if you force them to divide, if would break their hearts. We have created a huge family with the Packer Program and it continues to grow. I agree that this is not a good solution to the problem. kel
