Youth minister convicted on sex charge

A Clayton County youth minister was found guilty Monday of charges that he used an online chat room to arrange a sexual encounter in Peachtree City with a girl he thought was 15 years old.

Mohammad Leon Bolton, 31, of McDonough, was sentenced to 10 years in prison followed by five years on probation and a $25,000 fine by Fayette Superior Court Judge Johnnie L. Caldwell Jr.

Bolton had testified he showed up to meet the girl, but not because he wanted to have sex with her.

“I just wanted to see if that person was trying to set me up potentially,” Bolton said.

Bolton also testified that he wanted to counsel “Shelby.”
“I said if she would have been 15 years old, I would have, because that’s what I do: I talk to teens who do crazy stuff,” Bolton testified.

Bolton was arrested in October as part of an undercover sting operated by the Peachtree City Police Department. Police Chief James Murray said the guity verdict was a victory for citizens because it shows the community will not tolerate adults arranging to have sex with local children.

"It's a great victory for the community," Murray said, adding that the verdict sends a message to others who have been arrested in the undercover operation.

Some of the language Bolton used in the instant messages with the undercover officer was so graphic that he spelled out the words instead of saying them when he read back some of the transcript in court Monday. At one time, when “Shelby” asked if her being 15 was a problem, Mohammad replied: “Nope,” according to the transcript.

This guy was not just a predator; he was someone specifically entrusted with the souls of impressionable youth.

I delight in these stories of police nailing internet predators by posing as vulnerable children. I am especially delighted when someone in his position is found out.

That's a very creative defense for this guy. He's trolling the internet looking for underage girls who offer sex so he can contact them and counsel them. Huh? The only one better than that is that he was going to make a citizen's arrest and turn them in to the police.

Lee Sexton must be his attorney or ghost writer.

Without a doubt. He makes the Govt prove their case, which is very important. Although, I don't think he's involved in this case.

I've known Lee for many, many years. He's a good guy.

I know him too, he was my lawyer once. Never again.

I use a ponytail-free lawyer now. My new lawyer has some legal skills and is able to return phone calls. What a deal!

Sexton will do anything for a buck...Sure, he'll get perverts off walking the street. Wait until its your daughter that gets crossexamined by a cheap lawyer like him. He's had ethics problems and sued a cop. Got dismissed. He'll rat out anyone. You guys must be lawyers if you love him. You guys want to celebrate a lawyer who puts perverts back onto the playground when the lawyer he knows that they're guilty that's your choice. I think theyre scum.

Ponytail criminal lawyers love the limelight, so here goes, Lee.

Why are Lee Sexton (and other criminal lawyers) scum ? For the way he makes his living and how he does it. He abuses cops and victims. He puts perverts back in business, knowing that they will victimize again. Those pony-tails will say “I am just doing my job and supporting the Constitution.” Crap--- they are sucking cash out of desperate people who would rather unload every penny they have to Sexton than go to prison. That’s why you see Sexton riding in a fancy car sitting on phone books. Sexton is no different. Many criminal lawyers suck money from their clients and the public defender system by playing the same tune. A child molester would rather give Lee Sexton or a couple other of these well known local yokels $25,000 and get off than go to prison.

Good example of defense lawyer waste and abuse to the system---- look at the Brian Nichols case. He murdered a Judge and several others on video tape and in front of a dozen eyewitnesses in the courthouse more than a year ago. Literally dozens of eyewitnesses. Here we are more than a year later and the Defense Lawyers (notice the plural) are milking this thing for all it is worth. They are filing any Motion they can download. They have probably outsourced to clerks in India to make up more motions so they can pad their bill to Fulton County.

Between 1865 and 1911, three American Presidents were assassinated. All three assassins were arrested, processed, tried, convicted, appealed and executed in much less than a year. Two were executed within 2 months. Why has Nichols’ case taken over a year and they have not even finished the preliminary stuff ? Because unscrupulous lawyers have ruined the legal system.

You speak as all cops are good. I can tell you from experience that they are not all good. You, along with any man could easily be put in the same position as I have been put in. Read the blog "Coweta Injustice System". The teenage girls today can easily manipulate the system and they are protected. I hate child molesters as much as you do, but to convict a child molester requires no evidence whatsoever. If you read the blog you may understand.

Agree completely. Nevertheless, the system will be difficult to change. Vigilante justice was something I never understood until a few years ago, but now I think I could actually do it - pull the
trigger on a predator like Nichols.

Let's hear more from you cop friends.

I din't know where else to put this, but has anyone but me read in the AJC about Mckinney hitting a policeman in DC? She had her attitude of "don't you know who I am?" and walked around a metal detector with no ID on and when the policeman stopped her...she hit him!

I hope the officer presses charges, and that she gets jail time.

Whether suing a cop is evidence of anything sinister depends upon what the cop did. In some instances of abuse, civil action is the only recourse that citizens have against bad cops. There are bad cops out there and it's a good thing to get them off of the street so that the good ones can do their jobs.

I am in two minds about the role that a defense attorney must play in cases involving people obviously guilty of heinous crimes like child molestation. On the one hand I have to wonder how in the world
an attorney who is a person of integrity can bring himself to defend such a person. And I'll add that, insofar as such a defense involves out-and-out lies and deception, then I cannot see at all how it can be justified.

But suppose that a defense attorney does a good job of demonstrating (actual) weaknesses in the case against his client, and does so without deception. He might know or strongly suspect that his client is guilty. Given the nature of our system, hasn't he actually performed a service to the court (despite the fact that you and I--and perhaps he himself--may occasionally despise the results?)

Ummmm, Mr. Morgan, Do you have something against Lee Sexton? I'd suggest that if you were arrested for a crime, or if a relative of yours was arrested, he would probably be the first person you'd want to call, and if not him, then certainly another criminal defense lawyer. This is America....everyone, including people accused of crimes, is entitled to a fair trial. Defense lawyers don't decide who is innocent or guilty....they simply make sure their clients receive a fair trial according to the law. I know lawyers aren't very popular until you need one...but that was a low shot, Mr. Morgan. While the defense is a little "creative", it is not impossible to believe. Unless you were in court and actually heard all the evidence, your verdict of guilty even before the jury returns is a little premature.

Lawdaga, yes Sexton is a legal whore. He will do anything for money including getting a predator off (no sexual pun intended or implied).

muddle, attoneys of integrity would not defend scum like this "preacher" but lawyers like Sexton sign up as public defenders so they don't have to actually be good to get clients, instead the court assigns them to you. The downside of that is you can't pick and choose. You have to take the next assignment or you don't get another. Of course the next one might be Charles Manson, but you take that chance when you sell yourself to the lowest bidder.

And by the way, muddle, get rid of the Chesterton quote - it is much too obscure for Fayette County. Something from the American Revolution or even the Civil War would be better.

I object to the comments by Robert M that "Sexton is a legal whore. He will do anything for money." The working girls on Stewart Avenue are quite offended by the comparison.

I would think that you are too. It's the backbone of our society. Is everything perfect? Far from it, but I like our system the best of any in the world.
