Congressmen don’t answer citizen’s letters

Most of us in Fayette County are affected by Delta Airlines, its bankruptcy and the severe salary cuts of the employees. What more is ahead?

Recently I found myself really anxious about what I call white collar thievery, the unrealistic profits and salaries of the executives and companies. I wrote to our representatives in Washington D.C. Of three letters mailed, I received one answer, a form letter concerning the high fuel costs.

I had cited: 1. Enron scandal - a disgrace. 2. $72-$80 billion profit by Exxon. 3. United Airlines out of bankruptcy, the employees having taken huge salary cuts while the executives have a $100 million bonus to divide. 4. Unreal cost in medicines and medical care.

What is going on in our country? We must all vote.

Marie,
Our government isn't for the people anymore it is for the powerful (rich) now.
Did you really think you could get anywhere with a business(our gov't) that pays 26.00 for a 2.00 screw you could get from hardware store?

None of the problems you cite should in any way involve congress.
1. Enron scandal. Congress got involved and created Sarbanes-Oxley - the costs of which have been transfered to all consumers through higher purchase prices and have actually hurt small business so much that it may be repealed.
2.Exxon profit - they are being rewarded for investments made prviously. They are the only oil company that can take the oil from the ground and deliver it to the pump. That takes a lot of investment. They are now reaping the reward. Buy some XOM stock and profit from it.
3.United Airlines - same as earlier comment - don't fly them. Since you live in PTC, you should be supporting your Delta neighbors by not even considering UAL flights.
4.Again, same as earlier comment. Medicines cost money. Development takes many years, if efficacy is proven, and millions of dollars to bring to market.
Let the free market do what it is supposed to do. There will be many people and corporations that cheat the system. Eventually, as with Enron, WCOM, and many others they will be punished by the free market and run out of business. You cannot be protected from all bad things. Many people lost their life savings during these debacles. There are a few simple investment rules that can help. Never invest in the stock of the company for whom you work. Never invest all of your money in one stock - diversify. Never invest any money in auto's or airlines.

Marie,

Did you know that each congressman represents 646,952 people! The issues you raise are interesting but deserve little more than a form letter. 1. Enron - no one disagrees with you; why not write a letter telling your congressman that you hate the way your neighbor lets his dog do its business in your yard. 2. Profits by gas businesses are a GOOD thing. If it weren’t for profit, who would work? I like businesses making money; I hate the jealousy that accompanies it. 3. Execs taking profit? Vote with your dollar, don't patronize that business. We need more government "fixes" like we need more yellow signs on 54. 4. Medicine is expensive; research makes drugs cost a lot. Insurance is the middle man and were all getting screwed. I would rather capitalism work this problem out than having government "fix" more stuff.

Bottom line, we all wish congress was more responsive. The vast majority of changes that affect your life come from the state and local level. Call your state rep. I'll wager you get a call back.
