Vote in anti-annexation candidates

By: Letters to the ...

It was nice to see the most important issue in the upcoming election delineated in the first letter to the editor in last week’s Citizen. There are lots of issues that affect a few people here and a few there, but nothing touches us all like annexation.

In 2000 there were lots of us writing letters to the editor fighting Mayor Annex’s plan to bring 950 acres into Peachtree City to benefit his developer buddies. That opposition to annexation became the base of support for Brown, Rapson, and Weed four years ago when they ran for office.

Annexations are bad for PTC citizens for more reasons than George Kadel cited. We have all seen our PTC taxes go up. The bigger the city becomes, the more it costs to maintain it. Small towns have very little budgets, while big cities cost a fortune to run.

The notion that more citizens mean more people to cover the costs is bunk. It drains the school system and every other system.

Bringing in one home every two acres of BUILDABLE land, as per the current county zoning, would not be a problem. The developers can still make money this way, just not as much at our expense.

Homeowners will be hit the worst. 30269 is a popular zip code. The developers want to cash in on that. They can charge an extra $30,000 for an HD-2-Step (step one: clear cut, step 2: shoe horn the homes in) Peachtree City home versus some other location.

This affects us because it increases the supply of homes, which will, as we all know, decrease the demand. Everyone will take a hit in the wallet with an annexation.

So whom do we vote for? Steve Rapson stands alone in the Post 3 race. Dan Tennant is the only mayoral candidate who is against annexation.

Steve Brown was a leader in the 2000 fight and even put together a moratorium when he got into office, but he has left his base to actually pursue annexation and cheerlead the current plan under consideration. I doubt he will make the run-off because of it.

Be sure to get out and vote your best interests. Vote the big issue that most profoundly affects you. Vote anti-annexation.

Scruffy you are nuts. Brown won't get 10% of the vote - he may even come in last - after that guy that never shows up.

It's incredible difficult to take any recommendation for Steve Rapson seriously when you consider the man violated the ethics code and did so under the watch of the so-called ethics czar, Steve Brown. We can talk endlessly about the issues, but the fact that Steve Rapson violated ethics has permanently tainted whatever he espouses. As for annexation, the foolish view is the one that denies that development in the west village will occur. It's coming regardless of what PTC does- we had better make sure that the inevitible development is done to PTC's standards.

you got everything 100% wrong like you usually do. Brown will make the runoff - just look how hard he is vying for attention - on the city's time, I might add. We have a good chance of getting our spoiled child mayor back for another 4 years.

I just moved to a West "Village" neighborhood, and it's not the fine lake homes of Wynamede (sp?). I'm new, having relocated from the Northeast. I must say, that traffic is a nightmare out there, and 90% of it is coming out of Coweta County. The other day it took me thirty minutes to get from McDuff Parkway to Chilis.

Now, since I'm new, I probably shouldn't complain, and I did buy into the new stuff on the Westside, but now that I'm in I'm all for closing the door (typical hypocritical new resident, I know).

The problem is also Coweta. They are growing OUT OF CONTROL, and it seems like every one of them are driving to or through PTC every day. Even with the road finished (54) it won't reduce the number of cars (that will INCREASE) and it will still be just as tough getting out of McDuff and the Home Depot/Wal-Mart parking lot.

And since when did the city council decide it was okay to hack down every single tree to build new homes and shopping centers. Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Cedarcroft, Centennial, and Chadsworth all hacked down every single tree. The rest of the city looks great (except a few blighted areas here and there).

If you guys are smart, you'll put a stop to all this development once and for all. Shut it down. A larger city brings larger crime and larger problems.

And when the city stops growing, it will be difficult to keep the services going on a static tax base, but you have to simply look back to what JFK said: "Ask not what Peachtree City can do for you, but what YOU can do for Peachtree City."

We have only been here a year, and we are already wondering if we should just move across town to Kedron Hills, or just boogie out of town altogether.

I've been all over this state, and there are only a handful of towns that aren't disasters. St. Simon's Island is nice, as are the far North Georgia Mountains. Most of the growing towns are filled with trash and uncontrolled growth.

Maybe we could have a little more serious thought go into the so-called West Village if we stopped referring to it as an annexation issue and called it by its more accurate and complete name - Planning. Annexation is one small (albeit controversial) part of the overall task of getting the West Village built. They way it works is you research, plan, design, review, approve and proceed to build - in exactly that order. Somewhere in between "plan" and "design" there needs to be a public discussion and debate about whether or not annexation is part of that plan. By, the way, Steve Brown promised exactly that in his campaign for mayor 4 years ago.

This used to be simple because PCDC and the compliant city government did all this without the benefit or distraction of public debate. But now that it is a public debate - maybe it would be best if all those involved would acknowledge that there is a professionally approved and workable process and it should be followed. Instead what we have are politicians and people - most of whom are well-intentioned and clueless about real planning issues - coming out with firm opinions like "We must annex" or "We can't annex" as if they have actually studied the entire process with the help of qualified professionals.

Any candidate who is running on pro or con annexation platform should immediately reconsider their position and go back to the safer and more intelligent position. "It may or may not be the answer - we'll look into it" Those that continue with the strong pro or con positions on annexation are being polictal hacks and pandering to a bunch of inattentive and uneducated voters. Frankly, it is insulting.

You are exactly right, keep spreading the word on what growth and annexation do for this city....terrible things, and you have proven that fact thank you.....

I am pleading with you this man is telling you how bad things are getting. This is what annexation will do for our city, don't let that happen!!!! Let's continue to work hard to keep annexation out of our town, vote for anti-annexation candidates; Tennant, I would say Rapson but after hearing all these un-ethical things he has done I just don't know anymore. So for now VOTE TENNANT
