huntington south

I am looking at moving to the Huntington south area for the following reasons.
1) Older houses can be purchased at lower prices
2) Fayette county seems to have been able to avoid tremendous urban sprawl.
3) The area seems poised for growth
4) I hear that the whitewater district is good. Minter and whitewater middle seem good but the whitewater high school has not been around long enough to make a critical judgment. How would you compare that school to say McIntosh or Starr's Mill
Also I am black... and not so familiar with Atlanta’s surrounding suburban areas. Is this area one where I can live without fear of crosses burning in my front lawn? I do not mean to start a large discussion on race relations. I just want a decent, affordable place for my family to live without having to worry about it. I looked at other areas including Gwinnett and Cobb County but I travel a lot and this area seems more convenient to the airport. Also I like the 1+ acre lot requirements in the area. Is this a family safe area? I do not see a lot of reports on drugs arrest and/or crime but I noticed that the car theft in the Fayetteville area is twice the nation’s average or more. All opinions are welcome.

Fayette County is a great family place...I came from Clayton when it got trashy...and when I mean trashy it had nothing to do with race..it had to do with people who could not afford to keep up their homes, kids who were allowed to wander at all hours and play loud music, 3 or 4 cousins living in the remodeled garage. My friends who were black moved to upscale areas of Fulton(which I couldn't afford) to get away from the trash too. If you are a good upstanding family who believe in education, keeping up your property and good old fashion family values "Come On Down"!!!!

Thanks for all the replies. I really like the fact that Fayette County seems to be taking progressive steps towards keeping the growth controlled. Fayette county seems to be growing fast but the city planners seem to, at least, have given some thought to the consequences of growth.

David Ross has given you some sound input on the schools. One Web site that I used was www.greatschools.net. You can look up any school in the U.S. and get the data on school size, teacher experience and teacher-student ratios.

I live in DeKalb now because my husband wanted an easier commute to Atlanta. But I grew up in Fayette, spent most of my 20s there and come back a lot. My nieces attend Fayette schools now and are doing well. It's a great place to raise a family. Like every place, it has its issues but what county doesn't?

Regardless, if you haven't already, spend some time in the area and get to know it better. That's really the only way you can discover for yourself if it is the best place for you and your family. I think you'd love it.

While many may think of the Whitewater school trio as excellent, look at the population of the schools. Whitewater High is bursting at the seems and they don't even have 4 years of students there yet. Too many people are moving ot that area. McIntosh too is bursting at the seems although it has two stories, just like Fayette High. Starr's Mill I am unsure of, but Sandy Creek and Flat Rock are under capacity while Burch is over capacity by 50 yet they have not had to obtain more trailers than they had 11 years ago. I'd ask for statistics for the schools at the BoE.

Yes, I would say that one out of every two houses has several crosses burning in the yard every night. The local children gather & roast marshmallows around them. We also have flying saucers & I've heard rumour that Big Foot lives in Bailey Oaks. Please stop in & we'll fly you around on a magic carpet for a tour.

Ignore the whiners, they are victims of everything. Our local police and ordinances are here for your protection.

Regarding the auto theft thing, it seems the statistics are overblown due to the high incidence of golf carts being stolen. It's sort of a right of passage around here, kids feel like they have to go out and steal a golf cart in order to be a man. They then abandon the stolen "vehicle" someplace where it is recovered and returned to its owner. Not condoning the practice here or making light of it at all, but that's why we have such high "vehicle theft" numbers.

And the race issue isn't an issue. Come on down.

Just don't use our parks nor fish before you move here and you might be ok.

highgreen is referring to the proposal to take back our cart paths and amenities from the illegal aliens from Coweta County (and elsewhere) who use our taxpayer-funded facilities without paying for them. Some of the more brilliant people who post here have suggested a user fee. highgreen is opposed, so he/she/it was being sarcastic.

We do have an illegal cart path user problem and should not ignore it - even though some of them are nice people. After all, many of our illegals are excellent bikers, joggers and in-line skaters, so when they are here they are productive and they always go home at the end of the day. But if they fall down and need medical care and sue us - who pays? And if they conceive a child while they are here using our facilities, is that child automatically a citizen of Peachtree City?
Do they get to voye for mayor?

Maybe we should ask the state or federal goverment's help with our illegal alien problem. Wonder how they would handle it?
