Yellow signs to exit Hwy. 54Tue, 03/21/2006 - 10:03am

Say bye-bye to those large yellow intersection warning signs that sprouted up last week on Ga. Highway 54 all the way from Peachtree City to Fayetteville. They will be replaced with green signs with white lettering, which was the original color scheme planned all along, according to officials with the Georgia Department of Transportation. The contractor on the project assumed the color scheme of yellow signs with black lettering because that was the color scheme of the older intersection warning signs, said DOT spokesman David Spear. The new signs are part of a program adopted in 2003 for high-speed corridors that move through urban and suburban areas, Spear said. That’s exactly the situation faced on Hwy. 54 in Fayette, he added. “Hopefully when they’re a different color they’ll be a little less obtrusive to folks,” Spear said. The signs created quite a stir as the bright yellow background stuck out like a sore thumb in Peachtree City, where city officials have made it routine to get national corporations to forego their corporate colors in favor of more pleasing schemes. Last Thursday several city council members expressed disdain over the signs, and city staff said they would contact the DOT to see what could be done about the matter. login to post comments |
