New DOT signs: Big and bright!

Strangers making their way on Ga. Highway 54 in Peachtree City won’t have any trouble figuring out where to make their next turn.

Large bright-yellow intersection signs were installed along the road Monday, stretching all the way to Fayetteville. This stretch of Hwy. 54 was recently resurfaced by a contractor for the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The signs stick out like a sore thumb particularly in Peachtree City, which has strict regulations as to the size, height and color of signs. Under other circumstance, the new intersection signs might have been confiscated by code enforcement for violating the sign ordinance.

But these are owned by the DOT, said City Public Information Officer Betsy Tyler.

“It’s their highway,” she said.

Barry Hancock, DOT spokesman, said this is a new design of intersection sign that the agency has developed, and similar signs will continue to be used on similar projects in the future.

“It is very effective, especially for new visitors to the area to be able to locate an upcoming intersection and things of that nature,” Hancock said.

Tyler agreed.

“It will certainly help people find their way around,” she said. “It will be difficult to miss a turn.”

I moved from Peachtree City to the Phoenix, AZ area a few years ago, and the difference is night and day. Our green street signs are large, the text is easy to read, and in a lot of cities, they light up at night, making it extremely easy for visitors and newcomers to find their way around.

So if y'all don't like the yellow DOT signs, get the city and county to improve the green street signs(eg make 'em bigger and easier to read).

They are for safety, not decoration. Those green signs with dim letters were near impossible to read at any distance, especially in the rain. Somebody finally did something right for a change and ignored the nitpickers.

Why not? That would make it possible for the legally blind to read them. Tacky, they are just tacky. It's that simple. IF you can't read the current road signs, or a map, you need to get off the roads.

Today's AJC discloses (on the front page) that the 36 signs in Coweta and Fayette Counties cost over $146,000, which averages over $4000 each. What I can't wait for is signs that show Paul Heard Hwy, Tom Murphy Pkwy, and eventually (gasp!) Dan Lakly Hwy. The way to heaven!

Might as well toss out all our sign ordinances while we're at it and put up guitar lesson signs and concert flyers on the telephone poles as well. We kowtowed to Best Buy for their ugly sign, why not keep trashing our planned community? I can see these signs in Riverdale or College Park, but not Peachtree City. Come on Logsdon, we brought you in to stop this kind of nonsense!

These signs are the tackiest thing since the Speedo! They are a complete eyesore. I think the smaller, diamond shaped signs that were already in place were perfectly adequate. They are junking up our roadside. What a waste of taxpayer money! Get rid of them!

You said “It will certainly help people find their way around,”

Well so would neon signs. You want to stand still for that? Get a grip, let's fight this nonsense - after all we are Peachtree City.

The yellow signs are wrong and the new mayor and council should be pushy with DOT. Who cares if it slows down the widening of 74 and other projects. Let's push ahead on our city's right to hide our intersections.

Peachtree City! Restrictions above safety - get it done!

Don't you people understand? The bigger your infultration of idiots, the more you must dumb things down. These signs are the perfect thing for people too blind or stupid to follow normal directions. My compliments to the DOT.

My husband and I were talking abot these signs today. They are a great idea, but I think the DOT should have asked for citzen input. I told my husband they should of been a different color, with a logo from the city on them. They are ugly, but I guess it's to late now.

Any idea why the signs are yellow? That color usually indicates some type of warning. Signs announcing streets and such are usually green or blue. I agree they look pretty bad.

I couldn't agree more with you. If only they had chosen a different color.

I wonder how long they are going to be up before a "Robin Hood of Good Taste" takes them down?

I think my subject line says it all! Come on Mayor...stand up to these people. Lets get our City General Counsel involved and find a legal loop hole or something. They look ridiculous and it would be a shame for our City Government to sit idol and do nothing.

If the obvious intent was to help people find a street......job well done. You can't miss the signs! Reminds me of signs on the interstate. The color really distracts from the natural landscape and takes away from the flowering trees and blooming flowers at the present time. I am very disappointed to see this happening in Peachtree City. Just my opinion.
