PTC getting billboard on I-75

Peachtree City tourism officials want to make it easier for travelers coming from Florida to find their way to town.

So the city’s tourism association will spend $1,500 a month for six months for a billboard along Interstate 75, according to association executive director Lauren Yawn. The billboard will be on the left and is aimed at catching the attention of motorists going north on I-75, she said.

The short time frame was necessary, Yawn said, because the benefits of billboards can be hard to track, and she wants to make sure the billboard is successful in directing travelers to the city’s hotels.

One of the goals of the association is to “put heads in beds” by promoting the city’s venues such as the tennis center and amphitheater, which are also operated by the association. The association is funded in part by revenues from the city’s hotel-motel tax, and Yawn meets regularly with local hotel owners.

The billboard will be near exit 213 and will direct motorists to exit 221 for Jonesboro Road in Lovejoy, where they can take Truett Cathy Highway, also known as McDonough Road, into Fayette County to reach Ga. Highway 54.

The billboard is still in the design stages at this point, Yawn said Wednesday afternoon.

Billboards are not welcome in Peachtree City, Fayetteville or unincorporated Fayette County, as those governments have banned them by ordinance.

What a waste of money! Billboard results are not hard to determine at all, but this one can be predicted in advance - zero, nada, nothing.

Who is going to see a billboard for a group of hotels and drive for 45 minutes through Lovejoy, south Jonesboro, Fayetteville and most of Peachtree City to get to west Peachtree City where most of the motels are located. Answer is no one will - and if for some reason someone does, they won't do it again.

The only good news in all this is that $1500 is pretty cheap for an interstate billboard. Probably can't see it.
