Traffic shift starts Wednesday

Coweta and Peachtree City commuters will be doing “the shift” starting Wednesday at the intersection of Ga. Highway 54 and Ga. Highway 34.

That’s when the new part of the intersection will be opened for traffic, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Although construction on Hwy. 54 has been maddening to many commuters in the area, once the project is done this summer the four lanes will be a dream compared to traffic before construction began.

The oft-clogged artery has been stymied at two places in particular: the two-lane bridge over Line Creek at the county line and the two-lane bridge over the CSX railroad, which is also close to the intersection of Hwy. 54 and Ga. Highway 74.

Those bridges are being replaced with much larger new bridges as part of the $14 million project.

I'm no fan of the "Big Box" either, but I don't like having to struggle through traffic to Newnan, Fayetteville or Atlanta to buy just the basics for living. PTC needs businesses. The ones we have now are slowly closing up. Newnan on a Saturday is packed with PTC folks.

I live off MacDuff Parkway and its gotten to the point where it takes 20 minutes to go to The Avenue. The blame should be on the company who owns the big box stores, since it was their traffic study that paved the way for approval. The engineers who performed that study should have their licenses revoked. At the very least there is a case of fraud.

I am no fan of big box stores but I see no reason why Wal-Mart or Home Deopt can be blamed for the traffic problems on Hwy 54. These stores do not have any impact on the traffic I face every morning and every afternoon. It is the increase of people, cars and housing that has inceased the traffic. Highway's 54 & 34 would have had to been made in to 4-lanes with or without these stores. Let's be a little realistic here.

In the history of Peachtree City, can anyone come up with a bigger screwup than building the Home Depot and Wal-mart BEFORE the road was ready for the traffic?

Next time build the road FIRST.

DUH!

That was a possibility when Steve Brown was mayor. He dropped the ball just like Bill Clinton did when he had a chance to get Osama bin Laden.

Home Depot and Wal-Mart had a right to build because of the zoning, but Brown and his cronies had a right to impose conditions and a timetable on that zoning. Where were they? What did they do? - except to invite those big boxes in - Best Buy too.

I don't have a problem with the big box stores. As a new transplant to the South Fulton area I've saved countless hours saved by going to the Walmart on Hwy 92 to do household shopping. It only makes sense for the cities/counties to bring in these businesses because the many of the residents are looking for value for their shopping dollar. Many of the residents dollars are being shelled out on increasing property taxes, water, electric, natural gas and regular gas bill. The key to a successful big box store is to have multiple entrances/exits...this by far alleviates many of the traffic snares.

PS...George Bush also let bin Laden get away in Tora Bora, Aghanistan. Read the book Jawbreaker.

I've read your comments. Please move back to South Fulton ASAP.

P.P.S.

Clinton let bin Laden get away in 1996 in the Sudan.

I was unaware that George Bush took tactical control of the operation at Tora bora and personally allowed Bin laden to get away. Silly Me, I thought the commander on the ground was in charge.

Try reading "Not a Good Day to Die" to understand the intracasies of unconventional warfare and Special operations in Afghanistan.
