Sun is shining, snow is melting, but roads still icy in spots

Georgia DOT crews began to go home Saturday afternoon in anticipation of responding to wintery weather again Sunday. However, crews will be on-call to treat problem areas as they arise.

Emergency services in some counties have been overwhelmed by the accidents on roadways so it is critical that people avoid unnecessary trips. Dawson County 911, for example, has reported extensive roadway accidents which has put a strain on their emergency services.

Below is a listing of road conditions across the state. Call 511 for up to the minute traffic information and roadway conditions or to report incidents, accidents and icy locations.

In Northwest Georgia

All District operations closed at noon but are on-call to address isolated icy spots across the northwest area of the state.

In Northeast Georgia

District operations will close at 5 pm today, but crews will be available to address icy spots when needs arise.

Metro Atlanta

All roads are open and passable; skeleton crews are monitoring icy spots in the metro area. Motorist still need to use extreme caution on bridges and overpasses as they are icy. We anticipate that due to low temperatures, bridges and overpasses will refreeze tonight; so motorist should exercise extreme caution.

In East Central Georgia

All roads are open and passable. Crews are on-call to respond as needed.

In West Central Georgia

There are no roads closed in West central Georgia. A full shift of 160 people is currently working to clear icy spots in the Macon area and Jones, Bibb and Twiggs counties.

In Southwest Georgia

There are no road closures in Southwest area. Georgia DOT crews are responding to reports of icy conditions.

In Southeast Georgia

All roads in Southeast Georgia are open and passable; crews are on call to respond as needed.

Again, the public is encouraged to refrain from driving if possible. Please contact the Georgia DOT for the latest information on road conditions via www:georgia-navigator.com or by dialing 511; and utilize extreme caution if driving is necessary.

More than 2,300 Georgia DOT maintenance crews have worked since noon on Friday to keep Georgia’s interstates safe and passable. As a result of the higher temperatures, many district operations centers and Georgia DOT’s Emergency Operations Center in central Atlanta are closing in early afternoon Saturday. Still, many employees are standing ready to address icy spots and clear the incidents as they occur.

“I am always appreciative of our employees’ resilience and their willingness to ensure the safety of our citizens,” said DOT Commissioner Vance C. Smith, Jr. “Even though it is sunny outside, the roadways may still have slick patches so we are encouraging people to stay off the roads.”

Looking ahead to Monday, Peachtree City will be closing Clover Green, which runs between Paschall Road off Ga. Highway 74 South and Clover Reach, on Monday, Feb. 15, to repair the sewer line serving Fire Station 81.

The fire station will be accessible from Paschall Road, and the businesses on Clover Green will be accessible from Clover Reach. City staff expects the roadway to be closed for approximately three days during the repairs.

Gee reading some the comments on here, you'd think this was a high school chat forum. Some of you so called adults are laughable, gee and you vote too? No matter what call the FCBOE made concerning the weather, someone would whine about it.

180 days are required for a completed school year. Given the fact FCBOE has closed the schools fewer that our northern school districts who deal with snow more than we'll ever have to do, sit down and shut up. We pay the people to make the call, get over it. Odd, I have found most of the loudest voices don't even have kids in school!

Some of us acted like children yesterday, myself included. I hate when I allow myself to be provoked into losing my grace. Some log onto the Citizen to share ideas, to learn from others, and at times to offer up little pearls of wisdom. There are a few that log on simply to complain about everything.

As far as the missed day of school, we used that time yesterday morning for my son to work on his project that's due in 2 weeks on Rosa Parks. It was nice having them home - now ask me if I'll feel that way by the middle of next week. Smiling

I think it was the correct decision to close the schools Friday. No way was I going to allow my child on a bus with the forecast called for the level of mix of weather.

Sorry some of you had to watch your kids and you couldn't use the school as your built in baby sitter.

cancellation to the list of why Georgia has one of the bottom five education records of our fifty states.

Take the course of least challenge and let the kids grow up here knowing the value of being at school is not a priority. Poor, poor choice by the Fayette BOE. You let the media create a needless frenzy over nothing.

Tell me BOE, how long, once the decision is made to go home early, does it take to get your bus drivers from their homes to the schools to pick up the kids? An hour?

And what would be the absolute most amount of snow on the ground in that hour? An inch. There is isn't a bus, car, SUV or van that cannot maneuver on less than an inch of snow. This storm cancellation decision was made last evening around 9PM, when every local TV channel AND the weather service were forecasting that ANY rain or snow would not start till after 12 noon.

How many students in Fayette County are given the FREE benefit of FREE transportation to/from school on these busses? And don't ever use the excuse that some 16 year old can't drive in snow. Who even ALLOWS them to drive in snow?? Take the FREE BUS or get your parent or neighbor or friend's parent drive you to school.

Well, just let these kids (and their workforce parents who had to cost their employer a lost workday, also) stay at home, sleep late, and be couch potatoes. And continue the sad legacy of the consequences of making no effort to take advantage of a FREE education.

Keep up the tough job of maintaining the lowest possible standards for education in the State of Ga.

So the FCBOE chose to preemptively close the schools because 3 inches of snow was forecast. What if the forecast was not perfectly accurate and the snow or ice arrived earlier? At a minimum, the kids could have been stuck at school for a while. The decision makers have to make the call the day before to provide the maximum amount of time for parents to schedule day care etc.

Compare the operational savings from a snow day against a single lawsuit from just one parent due to a bus accident and rational minds will realize that the prudent decision was made.

Let's start this by comparing apples to apples. Snow days are easier to come by nationwide due to threats of litigation. I grew up in the north and it was unheard of to get a snow day outside of a blizzard. But we did get them for ice storms. Georgia gets more ice than snow, typically. Ohio is tracking with more snow days now for than twenty years ago. And let's look at Fayette County. Fayette County is nowhere near the bottom decile nationally for high school academic achievement. To state that it is and to insinuate that the parents in this county do not value academic achievement is a ridiculous statement. This snow day will affect them very little since Valentine's day parties were scheduled for today and it is the day before winter break. And bussing is not free. I much rather the BOE decide to cancel school today, than send the kids home early. That is a collossal waste of expense and risk.
and this is Georgia. Even my company let its employees go home early. Both for safety and for fun. The snow will be gone by Monday anyway. Goil, have a good weekend. I hope that the stick did not perforate your colon.

Sorry you had to watch your children today, instead of sending them to school. I guess if they became stuck at school or on the FREE bus, because of the weather that would be alright with you. At least you wouldn't be stuck with them.

The Education system in this county is not free, look at your property tax bill. Unless of course you are 65 or older.
You seem angry, seek help.

Yup, it sure costs more in taxes to educate 'em when it snows at 1PM than it does when it doesn't snow, don't it??

Angry, no,just been out of this county to see people overseas who know the TRUE meaning of risking your children's lives so they can get educated. At any price. Regardless of the weather or the ignorance to the value of an educated mind.
The "help" you talk about could be of value to those at the BOE who literally can't be bothered to step out of their comfort zone to insist on a higher standard here.

Or, perhaps, just needs to take a chill pill and put things in perspective. It is one day, one day. Students attend a certain number of days in the school year and if they have a day off now it is made up later. Isn't it nice that they got to play in the snow and enjoy something that they rarely get to see, or even sit inside with a cup of hot chocolate and watch the snow fall? I am sure they missed having their valentine exchange but that surely will come next year--snow probably won't. If they are lucky the make-up day will be a miserable one where they would just as soon be in a classroom.

As for our educational system here, even though it has been a long, long time since I had students in the house, I do not see where we are in the toilet so to speak--educationally. If you have children in the school system and you are not happy with their progress perhaps you could volunteer to assist in class, run for the school board and help bring things up to 'snuff' (Just a little Southern colloquialism). If none of these suggestions appeal to you perhaps you can home school or send your students to a private school. I know, I know, you pay taxes and they should get a superior education in public school, but if they are not and you are not happy, it is one solution. And last but surely not least, and I hate to mention it because we would hate to lose you--you could relocate.

P>S> Isn't it great that we live in this wonderful country where we do not have to risk our children's lives in order for them to be educated?

There is a set number of days required for all school children. The missed day will be made up at the end of the year.

Every time I see the "man on the street" interviews I can't help but think: "Gee, I wish we southerners could be as smart as them there yanks.".

One would think that with all the transplants in the Atlanta area that eventually our ranking would rise. I wonder why that hasn't happened yet?

The inferiority complex that you love to ingrain in your youth is exactly my point. Poor little me, our poor little younguns couldn't EVUH learn to walk a couple hundred yards in all that white stuff without trippin and hurtin their po' little footsies...Yeah, that risk is MUCH greater a threat to your children than the the threat of actually being EDUCATED today for 6 or so hours. No, let's keep em home and enrich their po little minds in their bedroom or in front of the TV all day today.

Boo hoo, boo hoo.

Once every 3 or 4 years? Might wanna check your facts, sweetie.

Oh, and enjoy the next 10 days or so at home. Bless your little hearts. (And minds)

Lady, if I may call you that, I had a problem with your blanket ignorant portrait of southern stupidity. I had no disagreement with the silliness of keeping the children home from school today.

Just to lighten the mood, here is an old joke you might enjoy:

A northern woman is new in a small southern town.
The first southern woman she meets asks her, "So, where are you from?". The northern woman with her attitude of superiority answers, "I am from a place where we do not end a sentence with a preposition."
Surprised, the southern woman rephrases her question, "O.K. So where are you from, bitch?".

So PTCGOIL, where are you from?

It's 12:00 and there is still no snow! Why on Earth were the schools canceled? "Let's close the schools because it's cold!" Absolute genius! There's no ice on the roads, and there was not any ice this morning. There was absolutely no reason to shut down schools today. Typical day-to-day moron decision making at the BOE.

You would be surprised at how many kids lay-out on the Friday before a break anyway. Some just don't come and others, well, the parents get better airline fares if they leave on Thursday. The bottom line is that attendance is typically down on the Friday before a break. I just wish I had grabbed more than one IEP when I left. I had planned on working on several of them over the break. Oh well! More free time for me, right?

I remember very well years ago 4 brothers all from the same family were killed in Clayton county when the older brother tried to drive them all to school, road was icy,and the car skidded off the road. There was a huge uproar that teen drivers are not experienced enough to drive on icy roads. Ever since then, the schools close at the first sign of bad roads - probably the only decsion made by the BOE that I do agree with.

I remember that incident too. It was so very sad and if my memory serves me, the parents sued the Clayton County BOE. I think that was 1982, the year of the blizzard.

Now there's an educated person's headline. Tell me, how much did the BOE pay the family for the murder committed by that icy road? Did the icy road have to get it's own attorney? Was the icy road read it's Miranda Rights?

Since these same inexperienced teens die on dry roads in Georgia by far greater numbers than on icy roads each year, wouldn't it make sense to ban them from driving altogether in order to save teen lives?

How many snow days are we allowed before we man-up and learn to adapt like the rest of the country does? Just sayin.....Eye-wink

Do you know three people in this county, the entire Atlanta metropolitan area, that can drive a car, any vehicle, while seeing a single snow flake?

I was at the IBM training center back in the late 80’s while the east coast was ‘under threat’ of flurries and IBM treated it like a bomb scare.

At that time I was informed that Atlanta had a total of three snow plows and “they weren’t leaving the airport”.

I would imagine if I went to a Korger or Publix, right now, all the milk, bread and cheese would be gone.

I grew up in areas where it was not unusual to have 40+ inches of snow on the ground anytime during the winter months. Over the past 20 years I’ve come to realize that Atlanta simply freaks out if flurries are reported somewhere south of the “Mason-Dixon Line”.

Yes, It’s a fact that there are more 4-wheel drive vehicles here than any other place on earth, but the people that own them cant seem to drive them worth a damn when there is ‘white-stuff’ floating in the air. Go figure.

That you somehow equate the ability to drive a motor vehicle in Atlanta with Oklahoma, as it relates to driving in the “snow”, is beyond me.

People in Atlanta think “snow” is a metaphor for bad TV/cable reception, not frozen water.
