School board looks at further use for East Fayette

Fayette County School Board members from their comments Tuesday night seemed to be amenable to the idea of having the school system’s Facilities Services department relocated to the former East Fayette Elementary School. The board is expected to make a decision on the move at the Feb. 9 meeting.

Facilities Services Director Mike Satterfield in a Jan. 20 letter said his department is recommending the consolidation of all its offices, workshops and storage facilities from across the school system to the East Fayette facility.

Satterfield said East Fayette would provide sufficient space for the far-flung department and would provide a measure of safety and security for equipment stored on the site. He added that the East Fayette property would serve the needs of Facilities Services for years to come.

Satterfield noted the heavy foot traffic at the department’s Lafayette Education Center facility from LEC and Fayette County High School a short distance away. He said on occasion there have been safety issues such as students climbing on equipment stored behind the building.

Satterfield said that equipment at the East Fayette location would have an increased measure of safety and security with vehicles and equipment stored behind gates.

The request also includes the relocation of Food Services to East Fayette. Satterfield said there would be ample office space adjacent to the kitchen and that the recently renovated kitchen would make an excellent training center for Food Services staff.

Facilities Services components are currently located at LEC, central office, Kiwanis Field and at the Woolsey warehouse.

Board member Lee Wright during the discussion asked if there was a market for East Fayette. The question arose because the East Fayette property was slated for sale after Inman Elementary opened.

Satterfield in response said the school system had received a couple of inquiries, “but they didn’t go anywhere.”

Satterfield said he would like to make the move in February or March if possible, adding that the cost involved in the move would be minimal. Board members agreed to entertain the issue at the Feb. 9 meeting.

Let me be clear and say up front that I know we are all in tough times. Lots of people have lost their jobs. Coming from a board that has made some mistakes and a super that makes more than the Governor, still gets a car allowance (making over 200k a year, can't you afford a car from your normal salary), get 100% of health insurance paid, and 100% of his teacher retirement paid by the county:::: not one of them has said yes, we keep making cuts but we will NOT start one new program or build one more building or retro fit one building with any money that could go into restoring the money we have already taking from the teachers. Fayette county is changing and I promise Dr. D and company will be long gone when the saying, "teachers should just consider themselves lucky to work in Fayette county and they'll take what we give them" will be long gone.
Will any board member come out and say there is a bench mark for when they will give the 4.5% back? No, most likely because they will or already have though of 10 different ways to spend that money again.

It does appear that this was part of a master plan. How can anyone trust the Fayette County School system. I feel sorry for the teachers and the students.

would make an excellent training center for Food Services staff.

Gee, I thought the "recently renovated kitchen" was for the students. But hey, they went to a new school just after the renovation was finished. Such a wise expenditure. Puzzled
