Flying again

TinCan's picture

Maybe some of you know this guy. Hell, maybe you are this guy!

Look at the attached video of a performance by a stunt pilot who is, in real life a Delta Airlines pilot. His act at Air Shows is to pretend that he is a drunken spectator who rushes from the stands and jumps in a Piper Cub and takes off without any understanding of how to fly a plane. The Piper Cub is actually specifically built to withstand enormous stress and has a very powerful engine.

This is actually the most dangerous of Air Show acts because of the low altitude at which the pilot performs. This pilot possesses unbelievable skill, which becomes obvious in the attached video.

It wasn't pretty but at least I was able to keep all the round rubber thingies (tires) on the ground when I landed. Smiling

At least you had wheels, some of us had to learn to hover first.

I could never understand the leading and lagging blade concept and how all those pieces stayed together in-flight with all that stuff flaying around. One thing you always made sure of was that the "Jesus Nut" was secured before flight.

....Airplanes actually fly, helicopters merely beat the air into submission. Of course, some of us were more proficient than others in bouncing the darn things from time to time.

After I got out of tech school and worked on a couple of Bell 47s I learned one thing; for helio birds it's all about "smoke" and "mirrors" plus a little something about the stars being aligned in a certain position. Only then will one actually fly.

That was incredible! Wow! I would have loved to have seen that in person!
