Married Couples Pay More Than Unmarried Under Health Bill

WASHINGTON -- Some married couples would pay thousands of dollars more for the same health insurance coverage as unmarried people living together, under the health insurance overhaul plan pending in Congress.

The built-in "marriage penalty" in both House and Senate healthcare bills has received scant attention. But for scores of low-income and middle-income couples, it could mean a hike of $2,000 or more in annual insurance premiums the moment they say "I do."

You want marriage penalties? How about these Joe

The article makes a fair point...we'll see how it shakes out and I'm sure you'll keep us informed in a fair and balanced manner.

But what about the existing marriage penalties, Joe?

How about the marriage penalty for a couple who find themselves staring at a $1000 a month Cobra premium when the breadwinner is out of work and they can barely make the mortgage?

Or worse, shopping on the open market for coverage of they or their kids' pre-existing conditions?

Or worse still, getting a rescission letter from their insurer after a cancer diagnosis because they forgot to mention they had a mole removed years earlier?

What about the marriage penalty of declaring bankruptcy because you fell through the ever-widening cracks of our patchwork, employer-based insurance system.

Huh, Joe?

And what about the penalty of everyone else paying higher premiums because invincible 20-somethings don’t want to be "mandated" to buy insurance but still expect world-class treatment on the public dime when they get injured or seriously ill?

What about those penalties, Joe?

If the ACORN/Obama administration would stop spending money like drunken sailors on programs that have proven not to work and actually do something that would help turn the economy around, then people wouldn’t have to worry about not having a job now, would they bowser? You fix the root of the problem, not the symptom. This administration is taking America down a path that makes people dependent on government. That’s what Obama wants – he wants a welfare state so that all Americans are slaves to government.

Now, back to the subject that I actually addressed - Why do libs think that it is fair to tax married couples at a higher rate than singles? Are they anti-marriage? We already know that they don’t like children because they want all Americans to fund abortions and they won’t allow vouchers for children to attend decent schools of their choice.
