Fayette’s Top 10 Stupid Crimes of 2009

Nearly everyone has heard the “stupid criminal” anecdote about the bank robber who wrote the stick-up note on one of his checking account deposit slips.

While they may not measure up to the bank robber’s lack of criminal foresight, the following incidents or arrests compiled from local law enforcement activity logs and arrest reports during 2009 are examples of how a little thinking could help one stay out of trouble, obey the law and avoid the slammer.

Begging the question, “Why do people do what they do?” here is the Fayette Hall of Shame Top 10 Stupid Crimes of 2009:

10. A maintenance worker at an apartment complex saw two people climbing out of an apartment window, apparently having burglarized the dwelling. Each was carrying a wine cooler. Police were called and, upon investigation, found that nothing in the apartment was stolen. Officers did find several of the same type wine coolers in the refrigerator.

9. A Covington man who had transported his girlfriend to Piedmont Fayette Hospital was arrested after exhibiting erratic verbal and physical behavior in and around the area of the emergency room.

In a late night incident the man tried to access an emergency room computer containing patient information. After being told by staff to leave the area, the man went from room to room in the treatment area, upsetting patients and staff by his language as he took various medical supplies from the rooms.

The man then left the treatment room area and went to the emergency room waiting area where he began smoking and being loud and boisterous. He then went into the hospital’s lobby area, where he climbed into the fountain’s water basin and began collecting coins.

He subsequently climbed out of the fountain and entered a restroom, where he threw the coins in the trash. The man left the restroom and continued to upset people with his loud behavior until police arrived and placed him under arrest.

8. A man ran a stop sign with an officer behind him in a patrol unit, then threw a beer can out the window. The cop pulled him over, ran his license and found he was wanted in Fulton County. A search of the car revealed a cold beer under an unoccupied child seat. He was arrested on several charges.

7. Walking past the sheriff’s office immediately after being released from jail, a man took a set of windchimes hanging from a tree outside the law enforcement office. A call made to 911 led deputies to his home to ask about the windchimes. The man’s response, “Oh, I’ve got them right here.” The man surrendered the windchimes and was arrested for theft by taking.

6. Two men entering the bowling lanes and smelling like marijuana walked past the off-duty cop working at the front door. The officer went out to the car they arrived in and found one of the windows partly rolled down and the aroma of burned marijuana coming out of the window. The men were subsequently charged.

5. A man stopped for driving with an expired tag was arrested for driving without a valid license. The man requested that his medication bag be brought to jail with him. Officers inventorying the bag discovered a crack pipe and a small amount of crack cocaine inside one of the pill bottles. He was charged with possession.

4. A Fayetteville man talking on his cellphone ran a red light and struck another vehicle. The man failed a field sobriety test and was charged with DUI and a red light violation. The man was also charged with open container and carrying a concealed handgun.

3. A Jonesboro man driving at 3 a.m. with music blaring was stopped by Fayetteville police who, when running his license, found that the man was wanted as a deserter from the U.S. Army.

Also arrested at the scene after blowing positive for alcohol were two under-age males, one of whom told officers he was not sure if he had been drinking.

2. A Fayetteville man was stopped at 1:24 a.m. on Lanier Avenue for failure to maintain lane. The man could not produce his driver’s license, telling officers he thought it was still in possession of Peachtree City police after he had been arrested there for possession of marijuana.

And Number 1 is — A woman involved in a hit and run accident in Fayetteville abandoned her car a short distance away and fled through a wooded area to avoid pursuing officers.

Undeterred by her attempts to flee the scene, multiple officers began surrounding the area. Their pursuit led them to a small lake that the woman had waded into. The woman attempted to swim away from the three officers who entered the water behind her.

The three wet cops corralled her in the lake while she tried to make a cellphone call — a testament that the long arm of the law extends over water.

Perhaps 2010 will be different. But given local miscreants’ track records in 2009, it would be wise not to hold our breath.

A couple of years ago a customer of mine who is located in Crimedale...I mean Riverdale... came into the shop laughing and telling us of the bank robbery he had just witnessed.

It appears two or three street thugs robbed the bank next to the U-Haul storage facility. Using a U-haul as an escape vehicle, Riverdale's finest blocked the fleeing vehicle causing one of the bold robbers to jump out and make a run for it. With his baggy pants down around his ankles one of the pursuing officers ran up, grabbed him and slammed him on the asphalt. WHERE are the cameras when you need them?

Don't forget the lady in Florida that believing her dealer had ripped her off, took her crack rock to the police to have it tested, SURPRISE, yes it was crack, so they arrested her.

I can't imagine being in such dire straits that I would continue to walk into a retail store and take the money from a register, using a gun. It is pitiful on the face of it.
Then for others to joke about it and ask for more instances of other's misery is also telling!

However, I do have a couple for you anyway:
A fellow named Madoff took billions from widows and left many penniless telling them he could triple their income. He didn't bother to say anything about his Ponzi Scheme! Numerous families have been destroyed forever.
Now that is funny!

A group of highly intelligent people from Enronitis and AIGitis conned the stock owners out of billions---not to mention California taxpayers by selling power they didn't have by computer. Then some Ponzied insurance payouts by guaranteeing bad construction loans that there was no way to ever cover!
Now that is funny!

Then a group of politicians decided upon revenging us when three airplanes were crashed into our land killing many money traders, Pentagoners, and trying for the White House, by us attacking where they were trained--Afghanistan--but they were from Saudi Arabia and Africa. Then of course we also attacked Iraq, (I don't know why) leaving Afghanistan to strengthen from Pakistan hideouts for eight years. Now we need eight more years for Afghanistan and maybe Yemen and North Korea and Iran and maybe Syria.
About 150,000 of the terrorists (lived in wrong places; 5,000 American dead and 40,000 wounded; and maybe 2,000 of our "coalition" dead due to above. Nothing so far gained.
Now, tell me another one---keep it going!

Macho Pride and bragging rights are more important than simply protecting ourself!

Good...Let's look at them.

No Bonker$.... Not funny at all. What would have been funny is if one of his victims would have taken her kitchen knife and decapitated Madoff. Now THAT would have been funny. Tell you what is funny you old fart.... Funny is how you bring up Madoff and his Ponzi Schemes while excusing the Healthcare Ponzi Schemes your president and your Democrats are foisting upon the unwilling in this country. The thing that makes Madoff's Schemes more palatable is the FACT that Madoff's Schemes were entered into on a voluntary basis while Obama's Schemes are being imposed upon ALL of us via the force of the government. Not a damned thing FUNNY about that one, wouldn't you agree. Yet you embrace that crime so vigorously. Too bad you will probably not live long enough old man to see that your foot was shot off in the end.

A group of highly intelligent people from Enronitis and AIGitis conned the stock owners out of billions---not to mention California taxpayers by selling power they didn't have by computer.
Now that is funny!

What is funny is that many of these people are sent to prison while the same type of predators sit in Washington immune to the laws and penalties that should apply to them also. Now what is NOT funny is the American People are constant victims of their crimes.

Then a group of politicians decided upon revenging us when three airplanes were crashed into our land killing many money traders,

Shame on you, you shameless, envious, bitter freak. Denegrating the Americans and other world citizens killed in 'The Towers' as being "Money Traders" as if the deserved such fate. You are freaking low-life Bonker$. I sincerely hope when Obama's Healhcare is forced upon us and your life depends on critical medical treatments, that you are the FIRST one they deny benefits to.

Don't know what a "staits senial" is but I am impressed.

I think we lost more kids avenging them than they lost trading money!
The Muslim world does not like money trading, gambling, intelligentsia robbing the poor, and occupation of their countries.

I have no objection to money trading personally--just wanted to point out their reason for blowing that particular thing up, it was unjustified however.
I do not wish that you die however as you do me.

The Obama "health care" is coming from our elected reps!
It can be changed anytime sufficient votes are there to do it.

The votes were lost over the last several years due to mismanagement of selfish people.

No Bonky Donky... no objection to "money traders" at all. I love it how you denegrate the victims of terrorism by besmirching them with the hateful label you used to describe the innocent. Shame on you, you old fool.

Then a group of politicians decided upon revenging us when three airplanes were crashed into our land killing many money traders,

Your antipathy for the victims of 911 closely resembles the enmity you have previously displayed toward our men and women in uniform.

I do not wish that you die however as you do me.

No Donky Bonky...I don't want you to die. I just want you suffer the effects of the government run healthcare you fight to foist on the rest of us at our expense. But what you do have going for you is the realization that you can expect really long days before they euthanize you. Eye-wink No buddy...I want you to suffer the effects of your desires. Smiling

No mismanagement or selfish people in your Democrat Party eh Bonky? Shocked

With what hateful label did I besmirch them and denigrate them?
Was it "money-traders? That was what they did there! You said it was besmirching and denigrating, not me!

I didn't say I wanted to blacken or damn them. Nor, to detract from their honor, as you said!

As to innocence, I suspect many of those employees didn't even know they swapped gold from one pile to another in the lower basement!
Selling dollars and buying rupees is a stupid game I don't care about one way or the other. Shuffling debt from one pile to another is done in many households these days!

My real estate dweeb called me up to let me in on this "Stupid Criminal" goody.

At the old Pace Warehouse building on Frontage Road in Forest Park, there were several slime bags that decided to access the roof to steal the copper out of the multiple high dollar air conditioning units. While stripping copper the security guard walked over and simply took down the ladder and called the police. Needless to say, as high as that building is, all the police had to do was put the ladder back up and wait for the pieces of human debris to come down.

You gotta love it. The only thing that could have made this story better is if the perps would have drawn iron causing the law dawgs to send them to hell sooner than later. Smiling

You have to love the one reported today where the rump wipe in Athens was robbing a convenience store. While pulling the sawed off shotgun from out his pants he shot himself in the ankle. Last word was the thug was probably going to lose his foot.

Personally.... I LOVE IT.
