Fischer Crossings to get 1st-run movie multiplex with 2,000 seats 1 mile west of PTC; free popcorn refills

Popcorn, anyone?

Fayette and Coweta residents by late 2010 will have another choice for buying a box of popcorn and settling in to watch a first-run movie. The venue is the new NCG theaters that will bring 10-12 screens to the Fischer Crossings retail development at Ga. Highway 34 and Fischer Road in east Coweta County, less than a mile from Peachtree City.

“We’re hoping for Nov. 1, but it won’t be any later than Thanksgiving,” said Jeff Geiger, vice president of the Michigan-based Neighborhood Cinemas Group (NCG).

Geiger said his company plans to have 10 to 12 screens with a total of 2,038 seats in 40,000 square feet at Fischer Crossings. Each of the theaters will be outfitted with 100 percent digital projectors and digital sound and will come with stadium seating that includes high-back rockers. At least three of the screens will be 3-D-capable and all will feature first-run movies, he said.

Geiger said one of the theaters will include the NCG Ultra format, a company-specific design that presents first-run movies and other media on a screen approximately 50 feet wide and 30 feet in height and comes with high-end sound and seating, Geiger said.

Geiger said the arrival of NCG to the community will bring a different approach to the way movie-goers are accustomed to purchasing tickets and concessions. Rather than the usual approach of getting a ticket at the booth outside and snacks at the concession counter inside, NCG combines the two so that customers pay for the ticket and order drinks and popcorn at the same counter.

Another difference in approach comes after the purchase. Geiger said that, at Fischer Crossings, refills on sodas and popcorn will be free.

As for the selection of east Coweta to establish its second theater in Georgia, Geiger said NCG liked the demographics of the area, including that of Peachtree City.

“The demographics are ideal and this is a great location,” Geiger said of the east Coweta, west Fayette area. “There are a lot of opportunities to offer customers. They will have a place to go see a movie without having to travel 10 miles down the road.”

Peachtree City had a three-screen theater in the 1980s and ‘90s, but it went out of business more than a decade ago.

NCG operates 11 theaters in Michigan, Indiana and in Acworth in north metro Atlanta. Some of its theaters include IMAX screens.

Fischer Crossings developer Scott Seymour said the theaters will be located on the northeast corner of the large development and will be situated on the easternmost portion of the property. Moviegoers will access the theaters at the new entrance at the traffic light at Ga. Highway 54, a short distance to the east from the intersection of Fischer and Hwy. 34.

Also at the Fischer Crossing development, ground for the 136,000 Sam’s Club is being graded. The warehouse discount retailer is also expected to open in late 2010.

As for the other retailers for the 400,000 square-foot northeast portion of Fischer Crossings, Seymour said he is in negotiations now and expects more announcements in January.

The announcement may dim prospects for another, unnamed movie theater that a developer is touting for the controversial Line Creek commercial project on Hwy. 54 in Peachtree City, less than two miles from the Coweta movie site.

When this thing closes, will the empty building be converted into south metro's largest Value City? Or is the Goodwill still looking for a home?

I wonder how many of the PTC people who complain about the Coweta residents coming over to PTC will now be crossing the county line and disrupting traffic in Coweta. Hmmmm. Smiling

Submitted by jackyldo on Wed, 12/23/2009 - 7:22am.

crime, drugs, bad drivers, and everyone wanting to go there will drive through your city.
You have the same complaints about the Pavilion and there is a police sub station there, which does a good of job keeping the theater are safe.

Where would you like the teens to hang out?
Do you expect a 15-18 year old is going to sit at home in their rooms every night. It's needed for them as much as the 50 year old couple who want to take in a flick.

One hint to NGC if you have flexibility in build out make one screen a room for 80-150 seats and show some first run art films that never make it out of mid town.. movies like The Young Victoria, Nine, Precious and some other good Indie films. Along with our $$$ demographics, there is a fairly educated and sophisticated aufience in PTC.

Who is the genius that thinks 2,000 seats are needed each day for first run movies? The free popcorn will probably do it. Let's see. if you have 3 showings a day and are open 7 days a week, that would be 21 times 2,000 - 42,000 a week? That's not workable if 100% of our population goes every week. And with 10 screen, you could go every week and see all 10 movies for 10 weeks until they start over with a new lineup. And of course we are a big movie-going town. No one here has ever heard of Netflix or Blockbuster and we have lot's of disposable income - especially those of us with 4 kids who want to each see a different movie. Sure hope the tickets are under $10.

Of course you have to consider a larger area than just PTC from which to draw, so if we enlarge the market area from Hogansville to Henry County, thats almost 400,000 people, so they would only be looking at getting 10% of the entire population to come every week. That's got to be it.

So which bank is financing this? What does one do with a theater after it fails? What did we do with ours by the way. Is that where Carraba's is?

and the economics make more sense..
You might have 3-4 300 seat theaters 3D capable and then several smaller ones for non block buster releases.. or for 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks.

but you still need to have an enormous number of people coming out on a regular basis and I just don't see that from any of the areas within 20 miles of the theater.

And a 300 seat venue? Steve Brown and Harold Logsdon mud wrestling wouldn't fill that place. Dar Thompson stripped to the waist wearing spandex tights performing with Elton John - maybe, but you'd only want to see that once.

Looking forward to the new theaters. Good luck hopefully it will be a good venture.

One a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the best case, this is possibly a 4. However, it doesn't need to be.

Here are the future problems that Coweta County and theater ownership will have to deal with:

1. Late night teens that hangout before and after movies.
2. Crime with break-ins of autos.
3. Drugs
4. Traffic and "cruzing"
5. Teen drivers (inexperienced and on their cell phones while driving) Watch out at 54/74 intersection!

Peachtree City will be impacted as people move through the city from surrounding areas getting to the theater.

The ownership of the theater will have to prove that they can control these factors on their property before this will be good addition to our living environment.

That is why it is being located in the boom docks--I wouldn't leave my teenager there.
We need a decent place right in the middle of town for them, where it is watched by our officials. (not just a popcorn selling place with a greasy floor and rats, but a real clean and supervised area and study center.) I know they don't want the responsibility but we need to give it to them!

I know that have you have been to a few county fairs and couple of goat "ropings" but where in the heck are the "boom docks". Is that something unique to PTC or perhaps Riverdale?

I splained all that to some already on here. They are of course located on the beaches somewhere where ships unload and dirigibles.
I'll bet Savannah or Charleston have them.

"What in the "sam hill" do you know about giant floating rigid gas bags."

I can't think of anyone who would know more about this than old Bonker$.

He himself is a "giant gas bag", proving it on a daily basis here.

I have no idea if he can still float, but I'm guessing "rigid" ain't applied in decades.....

My guess is he doesn't know squat about dirigibles. As a general rule, I don't either, but specifically, I know quite a bit about one that was (and may still be) tethered via steel cable at Cudjoe Key, Florida. It had/has some special equipment aboard and at one time received some special support from a US Army Reserve Helicopter (I was involved in the support arrangement).

Submitted by Bonkers on Wed, 12/23/2009 - 11:59pm.

Yeah, that dirigible at Florida is probably one of those used for high communications!
Bet it was in the boomdocks too!

There already is a "decent place right in the middle of town for them, where it is watched by our officials. (not just a popcorn selling place with a greasy floor and rats, but a real clean and supervised area and study center.)"

Right in the middle of town!

It's called the library.

I for one am happy about the shorter drive to the movies, I don't go but my teenagers do. They're going to fill up that intersection with ugly big boxes anyway, better there than here.

Submitted by Bonkers on Wed, 12/23/2009 - 3:17pm.

Well you at least mentioned the library. Most just say "church work."

Now where in our library can one swim? Shoot a few hoops, have a locker, research your homework in a computer room with cubicles and print it out?

I don't think the library has inexpensive snacks. Does the library check one in digitally and out digitally so everyone knows if they are there or elsewhere?

Submitted by rmoc on Wed, 12/23/2009 - 8:56pm.

The Bridge is run by the PTC 1st Baptist and right around the corner from City Hall. From what I hear it is the kind of place to hang, play hoops, have a latte and they encourage the youth.

Submitted by Bonkers on Thu, 12/24/2009 - 12:04am.

Now just how many catholics, methodists, muslims and hindus do you expect to see there? And atheists and agnostics.

Are tongue-talking fundamentalists welcome? AMEs? They won't come unless you have some hot-stoves to pick up and some rattlers to handle.

By the way how much fun and socializing can one do in the library?
Are you allowed to whisper in this one?

Here is what Bonkers claims to need somehwere in the vicinity of City Hall in PTC-- a library study area, combined with an all weather swimming pool, combined with a snack shack with inexpensive candies and sweets, and a basketball court, and I assume a baseball field. A facility of this nature is cost prohibitive to build and would be a monster to maintain. The average citizen would not be able to afford its use.
At the library they can study, read, write, and eat and drink from a vending machine or a water fountain. You can also use the internet and print anything for a fee per sheet. Braelinn Rec has an area for ball and courts. And there are a couple of public swimming pools as well. Why do we need to build a redundant and costly structure?

Submitted by Bonkers on Thu, 12/24/2009 - 10:45am.

No baseball field and you know it!

Can't afford it huh?
But we can afford four million dollar tennis courts primarily for adults (some adults), can't we?

We can afford police cars for every cop, can't we?

We can afford a few millions of dollars police station to replace a moldy one, can't we?

And I think now we have about 2-3 million dollars worth of cart bridges that developers should have paid for, not us.

What is it that some of you hate about kids? They are just like you.

The Wedge's picture
Submitted by The Wedge on Thu, 12/24/2009 - 2:46pm.

Bonkers, I could ask you the same question about hating kids. You basically want to set up a nightclub/community center for kids 13-20 years old. I believe that it would be the worst possible thing for our kids-of which I have them and you most likely don't have any at that age. Our teenagers should be involved in family activities, supervised by adults or adults in a good proximity. A center where uninvolved parents can drop off their kids and abandon them there will cause all kinds of trouble. These kinds of hangouts for unsupervised kids never work well. They turn into a bullying house where the older teens prey upon the younger ones. It has turned this way and failed in three other cities that I have lived.
The government is supposed to provide policing power. I am not a fan of the tennis center. If it cannot turn a profit or break even, it should be sold to someone who can.

How are you doing? Now don't you have a honey do list on this fine Christmas Eve? You better get busy 'cuz wouldn't want Santa to find an unfinished honey do list! LOL!

as I explained to jen above, study is just one of many things there to help.
Our adults go to bars, parties, vacations, anywhere they please---but teens.....we don't care.
They are our next "valuable" citizens!

Ever notice most colleges have what I described?

The Wedge's picture
Submitted by The Wedge on Wed, 12/23/2009 - 3:35pm.

Even so, I see the PTC teens having parties, doing vacations (with families) and be everywhere in cars and golf carts. Colleges exist to serve this demographic. And a college is not a city. I struggle to come up with what else a 14 year old would need that isn't already here or that they would legally be able to do anyway. And have you figured out "Lock and Load" yet?

Submitted by normal on Tue, 12/22/2009 - 7:06pm.

Welcome to the real world and growth. There are always problems with growth. But life is to short to worry about silly stuff like you posted above. And whats worse teen drivers or old farts driving through front windows of businesses because they cant tell the difference between a brake and a gas pedal. And drugs, what about all the drunks at y knot every night, they take their drugs every day and then drive home. So I guess the theater will be a great addition across the border. No Problem

FROM PEACHTREE CITY..

NOT EXACTLY THE ""BOOM"" or is it boondocks ?

Submitted by Bonkers on Wed, 12/23/2009 - 8:03am.

Yes, BOOM docks.

An isolated part of the docks where blimps land and where ships are unloaded----way out.

Yeah in a great big parking lot out of town and the PTC police department jurisdiction!

Couldn't be more inviting for trouble!~

Submitted by jackyldo on Wed, 12/23/2009 - 8:19am.

boom docks is not even in Merriam-Webster or Oxford as an accepted word.

boondocks has been around since the 1930's and means rural area or rough country filled with dense brush..

you see trouble afraid I don't ... of course when 20,000 cars go there in a week and there is 1 incident I am sure you'll use that as proof to make your case.

The Wedge's picture
Submitted by The Wedge on Wed, 12/23/2009 - 8:11am.

Boom Docks is not even used anachronistically to the times of the CCC. Boon Docks is the proper term. Admit a mistake and drive on.

Submitted by Bonkers on Wed, 12/23/2009 - 11:27am.

Suggest that you check patent # 3972493 for dirigible docking device.
It is mounted on remote docks to land blimps and unload cargo ships.

I'm surprised that hutch hasn't seen them. They are particularily located away from everything since they often haul natural gas.

It is not Scandnavian.

It was however used in the "EDGE Chronicles" series of books about an unusual place.

The Wedge's picture
Submitted by The Wedge on Wed, 12/23/2009 - 11:34am.

Well? Boom Docks was never in the colloquial or anachronistic eras. The patent does not refer to "boom dock". And the way you used it does not convey any other meaning than boondock. Including a silly comic strip. Just admit it, codger, you screwed up.
