A Sandy Creek High School student was killed just before school this morning in a car crash in north Fayette County, sheriff’s deputies said this afternoon.

Angel Anthony, 16, of Fayetteville, died at Southern Regional Medical Center from injuries she suffered in the crash on Old Ford Road, according to the sheriff’s office.

Anthony was a passenger in the back seat of a 1994 Toyota Corolla and was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, deputies said. The vehicle was going north on Old Ford Road when the unnamed driver, also 16, lost control of the vehicle while on a curve around 8:01 a.m., deputies said.

The Toyota left the road and struck a stone mailbox; Anthony struck the rear window of the vehicle, causing severe injuries, deputies said.

The driver and another 16-year-old passenger, both of whom were not named by the sheriff’s department, avoided serious injuries and were apparently wearing their seat belts when the crash occurred, deputies said.

The sheriff’s investigation, conducted by the Traffic Enforcement division, remains under investigation at this time, deputies said.

Beg your children to wear a seatbelt and prevent tragedies like this in the future.

Ms. Anthony was a friend of my daughter. She was so saddened about this it just broke my heart that I didn't know what to say to her. How does one find comfort and answers to something so tragic? My sincerest condolences to the Anthony family.

I know this tragedy must be devastating for all involved! My two oldest children lost a dear friend in a auto accident while in high school. It was so difficult for them to handle that grief. I pray God blessings of peace and comfort come to all of them!

This is soo sad esp after all the exciting things that have been happening with the school. Maybe young drivers need more drivers education and to know how extremely important wearing a seat belt is.

O Lord, Whose ways are beyond understanding, listen to the prayers of Your faithful people: that those weighed down by grief at the loss of this child may find reassurance in Your infinite goodness. Amen.

My thoughts & prayers have been with the families & friends involved in this accident. I am a Fayette County School Bus Driver and one or more of these children are mine. I pulled up onto the scene immediately after this accident occurred. I called it in on the county radio, requesting an ambulance. By education, I am an ER Nurse/Paramedic. I knew immediately that this was a very serious situation and that all lives involved would be forever changed. To the Anthony Family; our hearts hurt and we grieve with you. May you know that we are with you and that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Words cannot comfort as we wish they could. To the driver; You are in my thoughts and prayers. I have known you for three years and have always been impressed with your positive attitude, good manners, kindness and the loyalty you have shown towards your friends and fellow students. I cannot imagine the devastation, the thoughts that are going through your head, the feelings you have felt, the turmoil. I hurt for you and I grieve with you.
The roads in that area this morning were horrid. The limited visibility was as severe as I have ever experienced since I began my route 4 years ago. When the roads are damp, the oils & emissions from vehicles mix with the dampness causing the roads to become extremely slick. Seasoned drivers are aware of this, while younger, less experienced drivers sometimes fail to realize the significance of a damp road. I arrived onto the scene immediately after the accident. I do not know exactly what happened or what caused this accident to take place. But this I am most sure: This is a horrible accident. Lives have been forever changed. We need to join together in our grief and show our support for all of the teens that were involved in this horrible accident. Compassion, Empathy, Love & Prayers are in order - that is what being a Sandy Creek Patriot is all about.

My sympathies to the young girls family and her friends. What a tragic thing to happen at this time of year or any time of year.

The 16 year old driver has some explaining to do as to why he had passengers in the car.
