Sandy Creek is Dome Bound after win over GriffinFri, 12/04/2009 - 11:44pm
By: Michael Boylan
Griffin gambled on the opening kick and lost. The Bears attempted an on-side kick but didn’t recover it, Sandy Creek's Sean Rowe did and he returned it for a touchdown. Seven seconds in to the Class AAAA state semifinal and Sandy Creek had a 7-0 lead. Griffin never truly recovered. The Patriots added a 32 yard field goal and a safety to take a 12-0 lead. A punting miscue gave Griffin terrific field position though and they capitalized several plays later with a one yard touchdown run. Zach Lopez added another field goal and Isaiah Johnson returned an interception (his second of the night) from deep in Sandy Creek territory for a touchdown. The Patriots led 22-7 and that’s the way the scored stayed until late in the fourth quarter. A Sandy Creek fumble while trying to run the clock out was recovered by Griffin and returned 60 yards for a touchdown. After a two point conversion, the Bears only trailed 22-15 but Sandy Creek recovered another on-side kick and preserved the win. The players, coaches and fans were jubilant after the game. “I can’t say enough about the defense,” said head coach Chip Walker after the game, heaping praise on players like Johnson, Rowe and Mike Spaulding. “Spaulding is the heart and soul of what we’re doing right now.” Spaulding made some huge plays on defense but also converted to major third downs that kept a long Sandy Creek drive alive in the third quarter. “We had three goals at the beginning of the year,” said quarterback Ronnie Bell. “County, region and state championships.” “We gave 100 percent tonight and we’re going to give 110 percent next week,” added Spaulding. The Patriots (13-1) will meet Clarke Central (12-2) next Friday at 8 p.m. at the Georgia Dome. Clarke Central reached the Class AAAA state final with a 28-0 win over Rockdale County. login to post comments |
