Griffin gambled on the opening kick and lost. The Bears attempted an on-side kick but didn’t recover it, Sandy Creek's Sean Rowe did and he returned it for a touchdown. Seven seconds in to the Class AAAA state semifinal and Sandy Creek had a 7-0 lead. Griffin never truly recovered.

The Patriots added a 32 yard field goal and a safety to take a 12-0 lead. A punting miscue gave Griffin terrific field position though and they capitalized several plays later with a one yard touchdown run. Zach Lopez added another field goal and Isaiah Johnson returned an interception (his second of the night) from deep in Sandy Creek territory for a touchdown.

The Patriots led 22-7 and that’s the way the scored stayed until late in the fourth quarter. A Sandy Creek fumble while trying to run the clock out was recovered by Griffin and returned 60 yards for a touchdown. After a two point conversion, the Bears only trailed 22-15 but Sandy Creek recovered another on-side kick and preserved the win.

The players, coaches and fans were jubilant after the game.

“I can’t say enough about the defense,” said head coach Chip Walker after the game, heaping praise on players like Johnson, Rowe and Mike Spaulding. “Spaulding is the heart and soul of what we’re doing right now.” Spaulding made some huge plays on defense but also converted to major third downs that kept a long Sandy Creek drive alive in the third quarter.

“We had three goals at the beginning of the year,” said quarterback Ronnie Bell. “County, region and state championships.”

“We gave 100 percent tonight and we’re going to give 110 percent next week,” added Spaulding.

The Patriots (13-1) will meet Clarke Central (12-2) next Friday at 8 p.m. at the Georgia Dome. Clarke Central reached the Class AAAA state final with a 28-0 win over Rockdale County.

Apparently the Fayette County Board of Education doubted you when someone refused to allow the appeal for Sandy Creek to stay up in 4AAAA next school year as the school fell short of 7 students to be classified 4AAAA. The school boards reason to drop back down to 3AAA is so that Sandy Creek would be able to compete fairly on their level. Mud in your face Fayette County School Board as they shown and PROVEN Sandy Creek CAN compete on the 4AAAA level!!! My take is now they don’t want Sandy Creek to show up the other schools in this county and DO NOT SUPPORT COMMUNITY by not supporting Sandy Creek in their appeal to stay up in 4AAAA and next year will be in a different region than the other high schools in this county. SHAME ON THE FAYETTE COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION!!!

Every time Sandy Creek wins a big game, you are right here complaining and whining about some BS that no one else cares about whatsoever. It's not good enough to celebrate SCHS; you have to grind some axe and bitch about whatever stupid slight you perceive. Just shut up already and let the rest of us enjoy Sandy Creek's great season and the big Dome showdown.

What is your problem AllSmiles? Nuk is dead on; you are taking away from something bigger than how you feel truth or not, take it to another forum or contact the FCBOE directly with all your bitchin. I was at the game with a contingent of WHS players pulling for SC, (yeah, the same school you waste no time taking shots at). For now, this is the biggest football story in the county in some time and we are all onboard for this ride. Go Patriots!

Okay, NUK 1 and Fyt35? I support Sandy Creek all the way!!!! My complaint is they will drop back down to a 3AAA classification next school year, which will put them in a different athletic region than McIntosh, Starr’s Mill, Fayette Co. and Whitewater. I think this a shame for the athlete’s sake as they will not be playing these schools anymore, but will have to travel out of county once again. The BOE did not support SC’s appeal to stay in this 4AAAA region and the board’s reason was they felt SC would compete better down in 3AAA athletics. To say the least, Sandy Creek can hold its own and get it down in 4AAAA. I am so proud of all of the athletes at Sandy Creek. Their hard work and dedication has paid off. GO CREEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps your time and contributions would be best spent if you showed more concern about where they stand in the "Scholastic Classification" and how prepared their students will be to move on to College,Technical School or Gainful Employment upon graduation.
