15 year loan allows improvements to police, fire stations and City Hall

The Peachtree City Council is expected Thursday night to approve a $2.55 million loan for various capital improvements.

Among the projects are $700,000 to finish the renovation of the police department headquarters, $365,000 to repair foundation issues at City Hall and $229,000 to resurface the parking lot at City Hall.

The city will use the Braelinn (Weber) and Kedron (Satterthwaite) fire stations as collateral for the loan. The stations which technically will be sold as part of the deal and repurchased over the 15-year life of the loan.

The lion’s share of the remaining funds are earmarked for improvements at the city’s four fire stations. The biggest such project will be at the Kedron station off Crabapple Lane which will be remodeled and expanded with the addition of a sewer connection to replace the current septic system. The price tag for that project is $411,000.

Neely station, located on Peachtree Parkway near Ga. Highway 54, will get a new roof, a redesigned HVAC system, new exterior paint and driveway and parking lot repairs for a total of $232,000 in work.

Weber station, located in the Braelinn area off south Peachtree Parkway, will get a new sewer connection to replace the septic service and also driveway and parking lot repairs for a total cost of $132,413.

Leach station, which is the newest, is only slated for driveway and parking lot repairs at $75,000. It is located off Paschal Road near Ga. Highway 74.

Other projects funded by the loan include the installation of a proximity security card system at City Hall, installation of a new exterior seal coating at City Hall and renovations to the city’s community development office.

Another 700,000 for the police department. Boy that place has cost us a lot over the years. Parking lots are good enough. Sell 2 fire stations and then buy them back. What if crap hits the fan in a few years and we cant pay the loan. Will they kick us out of the fire stations. Save the money first then fix the junk. Listen to Dave Ramsey you government morons.

This is the best we can do for the city? Resurface parking lots? Throwing another three quarters of a million dollars at the ill conceived structure housing our police department? How about a couple of shekels to repair crumbling storm drains and disintegrating water lines in the older sections of our city...you know where people live? Heck, how about a new village sign for Glenloch at the corner of 54 and PT Parkway...something not obviously designed and placed in the 1970's? Nessie does not live here!

This is not, by any stretch, resurfacing a parking lot. Fire engines, loaded with tools, equipment and water (which weighs just under 8 lbs per gallon) take an awful toll on the concrete. These areas need to be repaired to prevent damage to the trucks.

You know the real problem is not whether the lot was done too cheaply the first time but that it will be billed at ten times what it should be since it is tax money!
I doubt the fire trucks are designed so poorly that that short driveway is tearing them up?

We are in a recession---stop wasting money!
