Census: 5% of Fayette school kids under poverty line

The U.S. Census Bureau Nov. 18 released the 2008 poverty estimates for every school district and county in the nation. Data for Fayette County showed more than 5 percent of children ages 5-17 living in families in poverty.

The data is part of the Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE) program, representing the only current source of Census Bureau poverty data for each of the nation’s 3,142 counties and almost 14,000 Title I-eligible school districts.

The Fayette data showed 1,029 children, or 5.3 percent, in poverty out of a population of 19,250 children ages 5-17. Fayette County’s 2008 estimated population was 106,465.

A survey of area counties showed Coweta County with 2,862 children aged 5-17 in poverty, or approximately 11 percent of the 24,944 children of the same age in a county of 122,924.

Clayton County data showed 10,816 school-aged children, or 19 percent, out of a school population of 57,618 living in poverty with a countywide population of 273,718.

And in Henry County, figures revealed 4,153, or 10 percent of school-aged children, living in poverty in a county with a school population of 41,387 and a total population of 191,502.

SAIPE numbers track data from federal tax information, administrative records on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program participation, Census 2000 statistics and annual population estimates.

The Census Bureau data is used as one of the criteria to allocate federal funds to local jurisdictions. In addition, state and local programs use these data for distributing funds and managing school programs, according to the Census Bureau.

We all know that both Clayton and Fulton residents ship their kids into Fayette schools, then put them on the "Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program" and other government handouts.

The school system is trying to weed these parasites out, but they're still mooching off Fayette County taxpayers.

Participants in these programs should be the school systems first clue to tracking down the moochers.

Not bad numbers for Fayette considering all of the section 8 housing thrust upon the county by the feds. However these are 2008 numbers and you can count on these to change as the Congress begins to allow the feds to reclassify property owners and rental properties into section 8.

This will happen in Fayette as well as every other county in America. More people will rely on the government for their basic needs than ever before in American history. Just the way the government likes it.

Unfortunately, many folks who are impoverished are in that state because of drugs, lack of education and too many children. Yes, some are just unlucky but most are just plain ignorant!

And your point is?

When I see statements like this I am puzzled by them. Are you saying that because of these factors we should have public assistance for these ignorant people?

Is it the role of the state to help people that use drugs, lack education (assuming they simply dropped out of school) and had too many children? Is the role of the various religions to take care of these people and their children? Is it the role of non-profits to take care of these people? Whose role should it be to take care of people who make bad life decisions? Is it the role of a compassionate state, if there is such a thing?

There is truth in the notion that suffering enlightens minds to follow a better more productive path. That without suffering some people cannot correlate their actions with negative outcomes.

So should we minimize the suffering of ignorant people? How do they learn to improve their knowledge of good and bad decisions without suffering? In other words, who is the best teacher; a hard life or some entity that attempts to save them from their own bad judgment?

I would simply like to know what your point is in posting your statement.
