PTC candidate forum tonight

By: John Munford

Each candidate in Peachtree City's runoff election will appear tonight at a candidate forum at City Hall beginning at 7 p.m.

The event is open to the public and is hosted by the Peachtree City Youth Council.

For mayor, voters will choose between Cyndi Plunkett and Don Haddix. For the Post 3 council seat, voters will pick between Kim Learnard and Bob Walsh.

The Post 1 race, with the winner getting an abbreviated two-year term, will go to either Beth Pullias or Eric Imker. That is due to Haddix resigning from the seat to run for mayor as required by Georgia law. Councilwoman Cyndi Plunkett did not have to resign from her post to run for mayor because her seat was due to expire Jan. 1 anyway.

The mayor and post 3 races are for full four-year terms.

I wasn't able to make it to the forum. How was it? Did anything interesting happen?

Are you SURE you weren't there and just want to know what others thought??

Here's an observation. Cyndi spent the evening waving an 8x11 piece of paper around, daring everyone to look at it. ( Kinda hard, considering the candidates were at least 20 to 50 feet away from the crowd.) She also railed and railed against 20 bay gas stations and convenience stores. (If I was at the behind the register at one, and she walked in, I would duck and hit the silent alarm-fearing for my life.) The Exxon guy and the Race Trac faction stormed out screaming that the (beeeaaatch-paraphrase) will never get their special interest money AGAIN. Or a free hot dog.

When she opened her mouth to address Don (just about every mouth-opening, I might add), the eyeballs of the other candidates got bigger than the headlights on your golf cart. When each of them finally exhaled after holding their breath, it was like a mini-tornado rushing through the Council chambers. (Very similar to the effect the night that Logsdon berated the women in there on Nov. 5th Council meeting.) I think Harry might have given Cyndi some pointers on how to attain this reaction while at his Ins. Comm. Rally at Falcon Field last Sunday. But, maybe the Repub. party is training all candidates on how to make yourself look like a petty bully.

Now, mind you, Don did not take kindly to these tactics, (just short of accusing him of everything short stealing the frozen turkey out of the garage freezer). There was even an accusation that Don was at fault for the torrential rains we've had in the last month.( Okay, maybe I made that one up).

Think of it this way. Did you ever have a day as a child, when your mother was in her worst mood ever, trying to get the house clean for company, cooking and baking for the holidays, and your father walked into the kitchen just to tell her the mail had arrived and he would go get it and she whipped her head around (ala the Exorcist) and went beet red in the face and told him, in no uncertain terms, where he could put the mail? And you froze in your tracks, and your brothers and sister ran and hid in the closet? Well, it wasn't quite that bad, but you get the picture.

Finally, when Cyndi listened to Don's answer that yes,he did feel Cyndi accepted special interest donations, she said she was insulted by his response, and then started going on (more than once) about her veterinarian. Couldn't quite get that one.

I support Don Haddix, as he has ALWAYS answered questions on his votes and plans for the city and done it in a no-nonsense, let's get to the point kind of way. Cyndi very consciously tells you she is going to keep everything up and running as it has been for the last 30 years, but cannot tell you how or where she plans to get the cash to do it.

Finally, Cyndi, a note, this cardboard mailer from 220 Independence Lane. You've truly outdone yourself in the nastiness competition. The long list of your accomplishments on both the front and back, and the list of what YOU are going to do for PTC are in such fine print,I can hardly read it. I think the printer should give you your money back.

Yes, I am sure I wasn't there and yeah, I do want to know what others thought. That's why I asked.

I have yet to receive one of these mailers.

Consider yourself lucky on the mailer. Cyndi has been brainwashed by her political consultant that she is running for President of The Universe. Truly, it's as if she has Michelle Obama's staff of 24 telling her what to do. And, sadly, it's all wrong. It's nasty attack time, in their mind. Obviously, this is the only way left for a losing candidate to scream how mad she is at losing this race.

I will leave details to others from their perspective.

From mine her Letter to the Editor, the forum and her card that came out today is the Cyndi the minority has known for the last two years.

It has always been Logsdon and her who will define terms, issues and control information. They are the superior ones. If you don't you get accused of lying and personal attacks, as she did against me on the Dais for quoting her record and for something I had the emails, including hers, proving there was no lie.

As well you get told, again on the Dais, to fall in line and back the majority. Support what they want and promote it.

Since I am not doing that in the election she has gone nuclear on me yet again. Fabrications, inventions and distortions instead of saying what she will do.

In example, never has she said what her maximum tax rate would be. Only she would keep it as low as possible while keeping everything running as is, not liking the savings I got with changes at the Kedron, Tennis Center and Fred. She even admits the savings are at least $600,000 a year (actually more). I hope all notice these facilites are still here, running and entertaining the citizens. So, is lowest possible 1.5 mils?

So much for a positive campaign since she will not deal with her votes and is determined to hold power. After all going to State is her turn now that Logsdon is on the way up.

Make no mistake about it, she has talked about getting a State level job. Just like before and after becoming Mayor Logsdon talked about going to Federal or State level.

Mayor is not a job to seek as a stepping stone. It is a job to do because you care about your city.

I will not bust PTC's bubble.

So, you and Cyndi just stood at the podium and swapped accusations?

Her focus was framing answers in the context of what I would do. Mine was answering the questions asked and if any time left correcting her statements about me.

Not how a forum should be conducted. It was like a trap. Don't answer and it sticks, do answer and risk being in the mud.

I did answer every question asked. She did not.

Not the most pleasant experience.

You are bigger than this aren't you?

Why get in the dirt with her if that is what you think she is doing. Act like a mayor for crying out loud, you will be one.

Give us some dignity......please!

Sometimes I can't believe the stuff you write, really.

Give it a rest already.

Because some people who have not kept up with these things over the last two years have asked about what she is claiming. They want to know if any truth in them.

You may not believe it, but I want these things to end more than you do.

I cannot leave fabrications standing. Said often enough they become accepted as fact.

If Mayor there will be a Council whose fundamentals are shared. You will see decorum and structure restored to Council and its meetings.

Makes sense to me. The only missing ingredient would be content - meaning getting things done. If you can accomplish all that and promise that meetings will be televised, it would make things better.

Somehow I have myself convinced that if the council meetings were televised back when that low-life McMurrrain first came up with the "city sells the roadway" scenario, the blowback to the big 3 would have prevented it.

And Mitchell's Calligula project. That would be DOA after a televised meeting. And it should be.

Sure, you can argue that if people care they should take the time to attend meetings, but realistically you can't attend a 7PM meeting after a 12-hour workday/commute and multi-task the meeting/laundry/dinner/kids, etc. But you could do it at home if it were on TV.

Just don't get cute about it and let one of those tech geeks make suggestions like allowing tweets or text messages to be coming in during the meetings - that's going too far.
